SPENCER— Twenty-three records fell here Saturday in the North Rowan Track Classic at Eagle Stadium.

Thirteen records fell in the girls meet, which was won by High Point Andrews, and 10 fell in the boys competition, which was won by Charlotte Vance.

Leading the assault on the records was Northern Durham’s A.J. Davis, who broke three marks in the boys meet. He long jumped 23 feet, 71/4 inches, triple jumped 47-61/2 and high jumped 6-6.

Vance’s Juan Barrino won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in record times of 10.43 and 22.22.

Kevin Jones of Sumter, S.C., also broke two records with times of 4:26.19 in the 1600 and 9:50.4 in the 3200.

Jamaal Grant of Andrews won the 110 hurdles in a record time of 13.86, and the Andrews 400 relay team broke a record with a 42.88 clocking.

Greensboro Smith’s Dedn Adams ran the 400 in 50.81 for another record.

Nelly Anderson, competing unattached, was a double winner in the girls meet with record times of 2:24.34 in the 800 and 5:20.34 in the 1600.

Other individual record-breakers were Northwest Cabarrus’ Tempess Stark, 12.04, 100; Bernadette Washington, 25.11, 200; Greensboro Smith’s Jeretta Massey, 58.92, 400; Beverly Burnett of Burlington Cummings, 39-11m, shot put; Addie Bracy of Northwest Guilford, 12:15.86, 3200; and Cummings’ Chandra Pulliam , 45.37, 300 hurdles.

Washington is the daughter of former North Rowan star athlete Billy Ray Washington.

Records were set in all four girls relays — Sumter, S.C., 49.44 in the 400; Andrews, 1:42.87 in the 800 and 4:03.59 in the 1600; and Myers Park, 10:06.39 in the 3200.

The only local winner was West Rowan sophomore Sherina Steele. She won with a long jump of 17-5 and finished second in both hurdles.

Andrews won the girls title with 88 points to runner-up Burlington Cummings’ 75.5. West Rowan’s girls took third with 38.5 and Salisbury finished 18th with 10.5.

Vance scored 93 1/3 points to lead the boys meet, while Andrews was second with 84. North Rowan was eighth with 33, West Rowan ninth with 28, Salisbury tied for 17th with 9 and East Rowan 23rd with 7 1/3.
