Cecil Aldridge
NEW LONDON — Cecil Aldridge,
90, 44339 Highway 740, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at Stanly Memorial
Hospital, Albemarle.
Born Dec. 23, 1910, in Norwood,
Mr. Aldridge was a son of the late Martin Luther and Effie Jeanette Turner
Aldridge. He retired as a doffer from Wiscassett Mills and was a member of
Mountain Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
His wife, Annie Marie Whitley
Aldridge, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters Kay
A. Russell, Chesterfield,S.C., and Evelyn A. Holmes, New London; brother Burns
“Bunk” Aldridge, Norwood; sister Ousia A. Lee, Albemarle; five
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Robert ‘Bob’ Baker
KANNAPOLIS — Robert Earl
“Bob” Baker, 67, 206 Winona Ave., died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at NorthEast
Medical Center, Concord.
Born June 24, 1933, in
Huntersville, Mr. Baker was a son of the late Oscar B. and Nancy Therril Baker.
He was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and served with the U.S. Navy
in the Korean War.
A retired truck driver, he had
worked for Central Motor Lines, Akers Motor Lines and Standard Trucking.
Survivors include wife Sylvia
Janet Baker; son Robert Earl “Bobby”Baker Jr., Kannapolis; sister Clara B.
White, Defunik, Fla.; and brothers O.B. Baker, Destin, Fla., Fred Baker,

Benny ‘Cookie’ Cook
MOORESVILLE — Benny Wayne
“Cookie” Cook, 62, Unity Church Road, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at Lake
Norman Regional Medical Center after three weeks of illness.
Born Oct. 16, 1938, in
Mooresville, Mr. Cook was the son of Willie Fae Alley Cook, Mooresville, and the
late Benjamin Franklin Cook.He was a 1958 graduate of Landis High School.
He was a Landis High School
football and baseball standout and was a former member of Corriher Mills Men’s
World Champion Softball teams, as well as other local baseball and softball
teams. He had also been a member of the Milwaukee Braves Baseball Organization.
A farmer and member of Unity
United Methodist Church,Kannapolis, Mr. Cook was known as the “Enochville
Cantaloupe King.”
Survivors, in addition to his
mother, include son Benny W. Cook Jr.; daughters Kelly Dickson and Holly Steele,
both of Kannapolis; brother Johnny Cook, Mooresville; and four grandchildren.

be Saturday for Norma Jean “Sissy” Doolittle, 33, 1320 Mount Vernon Drive,
who died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born April 6, 1967, in Cabarrus
County, Miss Doolittle was a daughter of James Floyd Doolittle, China Grove, and
the late Shelby Jean Alexander Doolittle.

father, include stepmother Zoe Ellen Doolittle, China Grove; brother James Floyd
Doolittle Jr., Kannapolis; sisters Donna Bass and Kathy Talbert, both of

Lorine Brown Eudy
ROCKWELL — Lorine Brown Eudy,
69, Rockwell, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at the home of daughter Nancy
E.Campbell, Kannapolis.
Born Aug. 20, 1931, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Eudy, a daughter of the late Rodell and Geneva Scott Brown, was
educated in the Rowan County schools.
She formerly worked at Cannon
Mills Plant 1 and at Hardee’s, Jackson Park, Kannapolis. She was a member of
Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.
Her husband,J.D. Eudy, died April
14, 1992.
Survivors, in addition to her
daughter, include son Jefferson E. “Buddy” Eudy, of the home; brother Ernest
Brown, Rowan County; sisters Thelma Smith, Concord, Margie Furr, Albemarle,
Audrey Barnette, Rowan County, Ruby Cranford, Faith, Viola Cook, Kure Beach, and
Carolyn Morrow, North Wilkesboro; five grandchildren; and six

MOORESVILLE — “Lanny”
Loranzo Lee Gobble, 57, 285 Clearfield Drive, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at
his home in the Enochville community.
Born Aug. 12, 1943, in Rowan
County, Mr. Gobble was a son of the late Ralph Glenn and Fannie Irene Crook
Gobble. He was reared in Granite Quarry and attended Granite Quarry High School.
He was employed by Fieldcrest Cannon for 36 years.
A grandson preceded him in death.

Kepley Gobble; son Shane Lee Gobble, Kannapolis; stepchildren Angie Bunton,

‘Ellen’ Wade Green
Nancie “Ellen”Wade Green, 80,
Salisbury, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at her home after a year of declining
health.
Born Nov. 13, 1920, in Nellis,
W.Va., Mrs. Green, a daughter of the late Frank and Rosa Valentine Wade, was
educated in the West Virginia schools. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, Carl Edward Green, on Sept. 18, 1985, and a son, Terry Green, on June
20, 1987.
Survivors include sons Charles
Green, Vancouver, Washington, and James Green, Wesley Chapel, Fla.; daughters
Nancy G. Larrison and Pamela G. Murphy, both of Salisbury; sisters Marie W.
Loraine, Richland, Wash., and Margie W. Miller, Brookpark,Ohio; 16

James Ralph Hamby
KANNAPOLIS — James Ralph Hamby,
88, 205 W. 21st St., died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord.
Born July 7, 1912, in Wilkes
County, Mr. Hamby was a son of the late E.D. and Mary Jane Spears Hamby. He was
a tank mechanic while serving with the U.S. Amry during World War II.
In 1985,he retired from Cannon
Mills Co. Plant 4 weave room after 52 years. He was an active member of
Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon, Sunday school
teacher, member of the finance committee and a teacher for the Junior Boys’
Sunday school class.
His wife, Rosa Lowman Hamby, died
in 1997.
Survivors include brothers Dr.
G.Hanford Hamby, Black Mountain, and O.E. Hamby, Dobson.

worked at Cannon Mills personnel department. She was a member of Mount Zion
United Church of Christ.

Mr. Kesler was a son of the late Lester and Cora Ludwig Kesler. He attended
Rockwell schools.
He was a retired master sergeant
from the U.S. Air Force and worked for Goldtex as an electronic technician.

HORTON CREEK — William Lloyd
“Bill” Perkins, 71, Horton Creek, died Friday (March 30 , 2001) at Mountain
Area Hospice Center, Asheville.
Born Feb. 4, 1930, in Yancey
County, Mr. Perkins, a son of the late William L. and Ruth Letchworth Perkins,
was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a 1948 graduate of Boyden High
School. He served in Korea while in the U.S. Navy.
He retired from the Yancey County
School System, where he was was a drama and English teacher. An actor, he
participated in film and theater and was a member of Southern Appalachian
Repertory Theater, Burnsville Little Theater and Asheville Community Theater.
Survivors include wife Verlyn
“Lyn” Adkins Perkins; son David Perkins, Asheville; daughters Susan Perkins
and Lisa Gillen, both of Asheville; and sister Melba Goldsby, Asheville.
