Cecil Aldridge

NEW LONDON — Cecil Aldridge, 90, 44339 Highway 740, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Dec. 23, 1910, in Norwood, Mr. Aldridge was a son of the late Martin Luther and Effie Jeanette Turner Aldridge. He retired as a doffer from Wiscassett Mills and was a member of Mountain Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

His wife, Annie Marie Whitley Aldridge, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Kay A. Russell, Chesterfield,S.C., and Evelyn A. Holmes, New London; brother Burns “Bunk” Aldridge, Norwood; sister Ousia A. Lee, Albemarle; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 today, Mountain Creek Primitive Baptist CHurch, conducted by Elder Joe Helms. Burial, church cemetery.

The family is at the home of Evelyn A. Holmes, 44339 Hwy. 740.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge.

 

Robert ‘Bob’ Baker

KANNAPOLIS — Robert Earl “Bob” Baker, 67, 206 Winona Ave., died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 24, 1933, in Huntersville, Mr. Baker was a son of the late Oscar B. and Nancy Therril Baker. He was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and served with the U.S. Navy in the Korean War.

A retired truck driver, he had worked for Central Motor Lines, Akers Motor Lines and Standard Trucking.

Survivors include wife Sylvia Janet Baker; son Robert Earl “Bobby”Baker Jr., Kannapolis; sister Clara B. White, Defunik, Fla.; and brothers O.B. Baker, Destin, Fla., Fred Baker, Cocoa,Fla., and Julian Baker, Troutman.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Coble. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-9 tonight at the funeral home.At other times the family will be at the home of Frank Allman, 149 Briarcliff Drive, Kannapolis.

 

Benny ‘Cookie’ Cook

MOORESVILLE — Benny Wayne “Cookie” Cook, 62, Unity Church Road, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center after three weeks of illness.

Born Oct. 16, 1938, in Mooresville, Mr. Cook was the son of Willie Fae Alley Cook, Mooresville, and the late Benjamin Franklin Cook.He was a 1958 graduate of Landis High School.

He was a Landis High School football and baseball standout and was a former member of Corriher Mills Men’s World Champion Softball teams, as well as other local baseball and softball teams. He had also been a member of the Milwaukee Braves Baseball Organization.

A farmer and member of Unity United Methodist Church,Kannapolis, Mr. Cook was known as the “Enochville Cantaloupe King.”

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include son Benny W. Cook Jr.; daughters Kelly Dickson and Holly Steele, both of Kannapolis; brother Johnny Cook, Mooresville; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Unity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Carl Settle. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Kelly Dickson, Dunnmom Drive, Unity community, Kannapolis.

Norma Jean Doolittle

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Norma Jean “Sissy” Doolittle, 33, 1320 Mount Vernon Drive, who died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 6, 1967, in Cabarrus County, Miss Doolittle was a daughter of James Floyd Doolittle, China Grove, and the late Shelby Jean Alexander Doolittle.

Survivors, in addition to her father, include stepmother Zoe Ellen Doolittle, China Grove; brother James Floyd Doolittle Jr., Kannapolis; sisters Donna Bass and Kathy Talbert, both of Kannapolis, and Tammy Myers, Salisbury; and maternal grandmother Pauline Alexander, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev.Weldon Key. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of James Floyd and Zoe Ellen Doolittle, 1449 Circle Drive.

Lorine Brown Eudy

ROCKWELL — Lorine Brown Eudy, 69, Rockwell, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at the home of daughter Nancy E.Campbell, Kannapolis.

Born Aug. 20, 1931, in Rowan County, Mrs. Eudy, a daughter of the late Rodell and Geneva Scott Brown, was educated in the Rowan County schools.

She formerly worked at Cannon Mills Plant 1 and at Hardee’s, Jackson Park, Kannapolis. She was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church.

Her husband,J.D. Eudy, died April 14, 1992.

Survivors, in addition to her daughter, include son Jefferson E. “Buddy” Eudy, of the home; brother Ernest Brown, Rowan County; sisters Thelma Smith, Concord, Margie Furr, Albemarle, Audrey Barnette, Rowan County, Ruby Cranford, Faith, Viola Cook, Kure Beach, and Carolyn Morrow, North Wilkesboro; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Miller. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

‘Lanny’ Gobble

MOORESVILLE — “Lanny” Loranzo Lee Gobble, 57, 285 Clearfield Drive, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at his home in the Enochville community.

Born Aug. 12, 1943, in Rowan County, Mr. Gobble was a son of the late Ralph Glenn and Fannie Irene Crook Gobble. He was reared in Granite Quarry and attended Granite Quarry High School. He was employed by Fieldcrest Cannon for 36 years.

A grandson preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Hilda Kepley Gobble; son Shane Lee Gobble, Kannapolis; stepchildren Angie Bunton, Kimberly Crotts and Eric Plyler, all of Kannapolis, Robin Kale, South Carolina, and Crystal Ritchie, China Grove; brother Jacob Franklin Gobble, Rockwell; and five grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Lee Heggins. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park,China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Hilda Kepley Gobble, 285 Clearfield Drive, Enochville community.

 

‘Ellen’ Wade Green

Nancie “Ellen”Wade Green, 80, Salisbury, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at her home after a year of declining health.

Born Nov. 13, 1920, in Nellis, W.Va., Mrs. Green, a daughter of the late Frank and Rosa Valentine Wade, was educated in the West Virginia schools. She was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward Green, on Sept. 18, 1985, and a son, Terry Green, on June 20, 1987.

Survivors include sons Charles Green, Vancouver, Washington, and James Green, Wesley Chapel, Fla.; daughters Nancy G. Larrison and Pamela G. Murphy, both of Salisbury; sisters Marie W. Loraine, Richland, Wash., and Margie W. Miller, Brookpark,Ohio; 16 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Carl Haynes.

Visitation: None. The body will remain at Summersett Funeral Home until the graveside service.

James Ralph Hamby

KANNAPOLIS — James Ralph Hamby, 88, 205 W. 21st St., died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 7, 1912, in Wilkes County, Mr. Hamby was a son of the late E.D. and Mary Jane Spears Hamby. He was a tank mechanic while serving with the U.S. Amry during World War II.

In 1985,he retired from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 4 weave room after 52 years. He was an active member of Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, where he had been a deacon, Sunday school teacher, member of the finance committee and a teacher for the Junior Boys’ Sunday school class.

His wife, Rosa Lowman Hamby, died in 1997.

Survivors include brothers Dr. G.Hanford Hamby, Black Mountain, and O.E. Hamby, Dobson.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Blackwelder Park Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Stan Welch. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park. Military rites by DAV Chapter 27.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

‘Binkey’ Huddleston

ALBEMARLE — Bessie “Binkey” Kimmer Huddleston, 67, 517 Valleyview Drive, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at her home. She was dietitian manger at The Meadows of Rockwell.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Congregational Christian Church. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Howard Calvin Hussey

ALBEMARLE — Howard Calvin Hussey, 79, 24621 Scenic View Drive, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Poplin Grove Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery. Full military rites by U.S. Army Burial Team.

Shirley Morris Jacobs

LANDIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Shirley Morris Jacobs, 64, 113N. Correll St., who died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 10, 1937, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jacobs was a daughter of Idella Owens Morris, Best of Care Rest Home, Kannapolis, and the late Luther William Morris. She was a graduate of A.L. Brown High School, Kannapolis.

A retired secretary, she had worked at Cannon Mills personnel department. She was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Charlie B. Jacobs Jr.; brothers Bob Morris, Statesville, and Joe Morris,China Grove; and sisters Brenda Williams, Webster, N.Y., Nancy Harrington, Greensboro, and Louise Deal, China Grove.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Mount Zion United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Entombment, West Lawn Mausoleum.

Clyde ‘Ken’ Kesler

ROCKWELL — Clyde Kenneth “Ken” Kesler, 64, Goldsboro, died Monday (April 2, 2001) at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Goldsboro.

Born Jan. 23, 1937, in Rockwell, Mr. Kesler was a son of the late Lester and Cora Ludwig Kesler. He attended Rockwell schools.

He was a retired master sergeant from the U.S. Air Force and worked for Goldtex as an electronic technician.

Survivors include wife Ursula M. Kesler; son Barney Rey Kesler, Concord; daughters Monica Johnson and Renee Lancaster, both of Pikeville; five brothers; two sisters; and four grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory, Goldsboro.

Visitation: At the funeral home after the service.

Edward M. Keistler Jr.

CHARLOTTE — Edward Morrison Keistler Jr., 84, Charlotte, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at Presbyterian Hospital. His wife of 58 years, Marie Frick Keistler, is a Salisbury native.

Services: 12 p.m. Saturday, Cooks Memorial Presbyterian Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: At the church after the service.

William ‘Bill’ Perkins

HORTON CREEK — William Lloyd “Bill” Perkins, 71, Horton Creek, died Friday (March 30 , 2001) at Mountain Area Hospice Center, Asheville.

Born Feb. 4, 1930, in Yancey County, Mr. Perkins, a son of the late William L. and Ruth Letchworth Perkins, was educated in the Rowan County schools and was a 1948 graduate of Boyden High School. He served in Korea while in the U.S. Navy.

He retired from the Yancey County School System, where he was was a drama and English teacher. An actor, he participated in film and theater and was a member of Southern Appalachian Repertory Theater, Burnsville Little Theater and Asheville Community Theater.

Survivors include wife Verlyn “Lyn” Adkins Perkins; son David Perkins, Asheville; daughters Susan Perkins and Lisa Gillen, both of Asheville; and sister Melba Goldsby, Asheville.

The funeral was on Sunday (April 1, 2001) in Burnsville.

Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home was in charge.

William Eugene Smith

CONCORD — William Eugene “Gene” Smith, 37, 303-F Country Club Drive, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at his home.

Born Sept. 25, 1963, in Concord, Mr. Smith was a son of William Edward Smith, Florida, and Evie Jean Simmons Griffin, Salisbury. A graduate of Fruitland Baptist Bible Institute, Hendersonville, he had an associate’s degree in religion.

Assistant manager for Sleep Inn in Concord, he also taught at North Kannapolis Baptist Christian Academy. He was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother Jeff Smith, Mount Pleasant; and grandmother Nona Mae Smith, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, North Kannapolis Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Country Club Drive.
