Josephine ‘Jo’ Beam

The funeral will be Friday for Josephine “Jo” Stroud Beam, 58, 3800 Cauble Road, who died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at her home.

Born April 11, 1942, in Davie County, Mrs. Beam was a daughter of Aileen Ratledge Stroud, Mocksville, and the late Paul H. Shroud. She was educated in Cool Springs High School and was a 1964 graduate of Catawba College.

An English teacher at Davie County High School and Salisbury High School, she retired in 1982 from complications of multiple sclerosis.

She was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church and the Quilter’s Guild.

Survivors include husband Thomas E. “Tom” Beam, whom she married Sept. 1, 1962; son Gregory T. “Greg” Beam, Salisbury; daughter Amy B. Mahaley, Concord; brothers Dick and Bob Stroud, both of Mocksville; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Franklin Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Summey, pastor, and the Rev.Tim Trexler of Shelby. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.At other times the family will be at the home on Cauble Road.

Grimes Baxter Beck

Grimes Baxter Beck, 76, Salisbury, died Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a brief illness.

Born March 23, 1925, in Davie County, Mr. Beck was a son of the late Jesse Boone and Lula Beatrice Grubb Beck. He attended the Cooleemee schools. Employed as a carman for Southern Railway for 30 years, he retired in 1982.

A member of First Baptist Church, Spencer, he belonged to the Men’s Fellowship Class and Christian Men’s Fellowship. He was also a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342 and a former member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carman of America. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army and in Manila at Subic Bay.

A son, Grimes Beck Jr., died Oct. 27, 1964.

Survivors include wife Doris Carter Beck, whom he married Oct. 30, 1943; daughter Doris Elaine Beck, Pompano Beach,Fla.; brother Gilmer Beck, Salisbury; and sister Kathleen B. Barnhardt, Mocksville.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, pastor, First Baptist Church, Spencer. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Carolyn Hogan Bittle

WINSTON-SALEM — Carolyn Hogan “Wall” Bittle , 63, 655 Cloister Drive, formerly of Lexington, died Monday (April 2, 2001) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, United House of Prayer, Winston-Salem. Burial, Lexington Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation: 12-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

J.D. Blackwell

ALBEMARLE — J.D. Blackwell, 79, 745 Mill St., died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Stanly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Byron Whitley and the Rev. Bill Thompson. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory. Military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Eldus Blalock Hatley

ALBEMARLE — Eldus Blalock Hatley, 79, 33426 Old Salisbury Road, died Wednesday (April 4, 2001) at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Zankiya M. Kennedy

The funeral will be Friday for infant Zankiya Monique Kennedy, who died Sunday (March 25, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Friday, Oakwood Cemetery, conducted by Elder James Cowan.

Visitation: None.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Margaret V. Thompson

LANDIS — The funeral will be Friday for Margaret Vanderford Thompson, 77, 501 S. Correll St., who died Tuesday (April 3, 2001) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury.

Born July 3, 1923, in Rowan County, Mrs. Thompson, a daughter of the late Vard T. and Dicie Karriker Vanderford, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She retired from Rowan Industries.

A member of First United Methodist Church, she had formerly worked in the nursery department.

Her husband, Glenn Parks Thompson, died Jan. 24, 2000.

Survivors include sons Wayne P. Thompson, Mooresville, and Tony R. Thompson, Biloxi, Miss.; sister Hazel Basinger, Faith; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman. Burial,West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Memorials: First United Methodist Church, Building Fund, 110 W. Church St., China Grove, NC 28023.

 

Nancie Ellen Green

Nancie Ellen Green, 80, Salisbury, died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at her home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Shirley Mae Jacobs

LANDIS — Shirley Mae Jacobs, 64, 113 N. Correll St., died Thursday (April 5, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
