Gaither Lee Broadway
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Gaither Lee Broadway, 90, 8107 Smith Road, who died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Sept. 5, 1910, in Rowan County, Mr. Broadway was a son of the late Sam and Bettie Gullett Broadway. He retired from CannonMills Co., No. 7 card room in 1972 and owned G.L. Broadway Well Drilling Co. for many years.
His wife of 66 years, Annie Lee Allman Broadway, died Feb. 24, 2001.
Survivors include children Dorothy Jean Overcash, Larry Broadway, Alice Lyles, Troy Broadway and Sherry Steele, all of Kannapolis, Mildred Lyles, Landis, and Donald Ray Broadway, China Grove; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ron Irvin Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 6:30-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Sherry Steele, 400 E. 25th St, Kannapolis.
Paula Blume Houston
MOUNTAIN DALE, N.Y. — The funeral will be Wednesday for Paula Blume Houston, 70, Mountain Dale, who died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at Community General Hospital, Harris.
Her husband, John Robert Houston, is a former Cleveland, N.C., resident.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Third Creek AMEZion Church, Cleveland.
Astor ‘Buck’ Hurst
KANNAPOLIS — Astor “Buck” Hurst, 71, 2305 Carolina Ave., died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, due to complications from an automobile accident.
Born Feb. 13, 1930, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mr. Hurst was a son of the late William and Marie Melton Hurst. He was a retired carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard.
Survivors include wife Peggy Jean Quick Hurst; son Astor Lee Hurst, Gastonia; daughters Kathy Rhodes and Sandra Lamb, both of Kannapolis, Debra Hurst, Andrews, Yvonne Hunsucker and Darlene Carpenter, both of Concord, and Eva Carpenter, Salisbury; sisters Novella Watson,Chesterfield, S.C., Dorothy Therrell, Fort Mill, S.C., and Estelle Jordan, Kannapolis; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. J.E. Rahme and the Rev. Vaudry Tucker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Janice K. Jenkins
CAROLINA BEACH — Janice K. Pinkston Jenkins, Carolina Beach, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (April 2, 2001) at her home.
Born Dec. 2, 1948, in Jacksonville, Fla., Mrs. Jenkins was a daughter of Benjamin Kistler and the late Marie Guthrie Kistler.
Her husband, Robert Jenkins, preceded her in death.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include children Robert Pinkston, Ogden, William B. Pinkston and Sherry Haid, both of Carolina Beach, and Traci Lloyd, Richfield; stepson Ricky Bynum, Fayetteville; and 12 grandchildren.

Thelma Paxton
KANNAPOLIS — Thelma Chapman Paxton, 91, Big Elm Nursing Center, died Monday (April 2, 2001) at the nursing center after several years of declining health.
Born June 7, 1909, in Newton, Mrs. Paxton was a daughter of the late Harvey Macon and Myra Janie Elizabeth McGee Chapman. She retired from CannonMills winding room.
Her husband, Robert L. Paxton, died Aug. 16, 1979.
Survivors include daughters Barbara Hamilton and Judy Eudy, both of Kannapolis; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Wednesday for Roscoe William Ramsey, 74, 1185 Partee Drive, who died Friday (March 30, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Dec. 4, 1926, in Mooresville, Mr. Ramsey was a son of the late George W. and Winnie Campbell Ramsey. He was employed by the Mooresville School System and was a retired Baptist minister. He was a member of Price Masonic Lodge 290, Mooresville, the Joseph P. Evans Consistory 280, Salisbury, and was affiliated with Prince Hall.
Survivors include wife Mary R. Ramsey; sons the Rev. Dr. Roscoe Ramsey Jr., Lonexa, Va.,James A. Ramsey, Endicott, N.Y., and the Rev. David B. Ramsey, Statesville; stepsons the Rev. Willie E. Pearl Bullard Tolar
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Pearl Bullard Tolar, 90, 603 Locust St., who died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Aug. 23, 1910, in Bennetsville, S.C., Mrs. Tolar was a daughter of the late Charles William and Maggie Murphy Bullard. She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence A. Davis, and her second husband, Eddie Tolar.
Survivors include sons Ed and Clarence Wiley Davis, both of Kannapolis; daughters Ethel B. Helms, Concord, and Ann J. Furr, Kannapolis; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
