Dorothy M. Bigham

LANDIS — Dorothy Maulden Bigham, 83, Landis, died Saturday (March 31, 2001) in Matthews.

Born Nov. 26, 1917, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Bigham was a daughter of the late Grover C. and Norrie C. Maulden. She had retired in 1982 from Cannon Mills Plant 1, washcloth department. She was a lifetime member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Her husband, John D. Bigham, died in 1992.

Survivors include Ronald Bigham, Matthews, and Eric Bigham, Chapel Hill; brothers Roy Maulden, Kannapolis, and C.L. Maulden, Concord; sisters Betty Henderson, Salisbury, Hilda Misenheimer, Houston, Texas, and Thelma Williams, Monroe; and one grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Donald Shuman. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 9:30-11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Gaither Lee Broadway

KANNAPOLIS — Gaither Lee Broadway, 8107 Smith Road, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Billie ‘Sleepy’ Ellis

GRANITE QUARRY — Billie “Sleepy” Ellis, 70, Salisbury Avenue, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at the Laurels of Salisbury after three months of serious illness.

Born June 6, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Ellis, a son of the late Bud Ellis and Alice Wilson Ellis Robertson, attended Dunbar High School, East Spencer. He had retired from Oscar J. Bost Construction.

He was a former member of Yadkin Grove Baptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the Korean conflict. He was a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 and Granite Quarry Men’s Club.

Survivors include sons Billy Ellis Jr., Salisbury, and Robert Ellis, Odenton, Md.; daughters Hattie M. Massey, Charlotte, Delores E.Correll, Lawrenceville, Ga., Dorothy A. Ellis, Salisbury; brothers Leroy and Carlton Ellis, both of Salisbury, and Calvin Ellis, Granite Quarry; sisters Mildred Corpening and Patricia Sifford, both of Granite Quarry; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Reginald Massey. Burial, National Cemetery, Brenner Avenue, Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home of Dorothy Ellis, 1610 Dunns Mountain Road, Salisbury.

 

Henry L. Goodnight

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Tuesday for Henry Lamont Goodnight, 88, 1930 Brown Road, who died Saturday (March 31, 2001) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 8, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Goodnight, a son of the late Henry Neal and Ida Boger Goodnight, was educated at Landis High School. A farmer and a construction worker, he was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ.

Survivors include wife Whitaker Belk Goodnight; sons Cecil Goodnight, Raleigh, and David Goodnight, Denver, N.C.; sisters Ann Vaughn, Kannapolis, Mary Bell King, Ohio, and Betty McCorkle, Rock Hill, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev.Paul Pickler. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Paula Blum Houston

MOUNTAINDALE, N.Y. — Paula Blum Houston, 70, Mountaindale, died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at Community General Hospital-Harris.

Her husband, John Robert Houston, is a former resident of the Rowan County, N.C. area.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Third Creek AMEZion Church, Cleveland, N.C. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the church.

Bonita C. Puckett

MOORESVILLE — Bonita Calloway Puckett, 68, Institute Street, died Saturday (March 31, 2001) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Parker John Shelton

DENTON — Parker John Shelton, 2-day-old son of John Byron and Carmen Elaine Evans Shelton, died Thursday (March 22, 2001) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

The infant was born March 20, 2001, at the Medical Center.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sisters Natalie Elaine Wyrick and Katelyn Elizabeth Shelton, both of the home; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Leo Shelton, North Augusta, S.C., and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Evans, Gold Hill.

The funeral was held Saturday at Denton Wesleyan Church. The Rev. Charles Moses officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Briggs Funeral Home, Denton, was in charge.

Vander Simon

ALBEMARLE — Vander Simon, 91, 417 Lincoln St., died Thursday (March 29, 2001) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, St. Delight Church. Burial, Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Marvin ‘Rabbit’ Smith

Marvin Henry “Rabbit” Smith, 83, 470 Squirrel Run, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at the Hefner VAMedical Center after a year of declining health.

Born May 26, 1917, in Mooresville,Mr. Smith, a son of the late Henry Green and Mabel Blanche McNeely Smith, was educated in the China Grove schools.

He served in the U.S. Army during World WarII and was a golf pro at McCanless Golf Course from 1966 until he retired in 1989.

A Methodist, he was a member of Salisbury Elks Lodge, Spencer Moose Lodge and the DAV. He was also assistant coach on the American Legion Team that went to the World Series in 1955.

His wife,Hazel Alma Thrift Smith, died May 13, 1976; a son, Jerry Smith, died in 1939; and a granddaughter died in January 2001.

Survivors include sons Marvin H. “Buddy” Smith Jr., Aberdeen, Md., and James L. “Jimmy” Smith, Salisbury; brothers William C. and Alvin G. Smith, both of Salisbury; sisters Mary Lee Rex, Salisbury, and Faye Cole, Denton; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev.Joe Casey. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 Wednesday and 2-2:45 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Juanita S. Turcotte

KANNAPOLIS — Juanita Sifford Turcotte, 73, Kannapolis, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at her home after a year of serious illness.

Born July 31, 1927, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Turcotte was a daughter of the late Harvey Lee and Minnie Tickle Sifford. She was a graduate of Queens Business College, Charlotte.

A homemaker, she was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Leo M. Turcotte, died in 1990.

Survivors include son Terry Lee Turcotte, Kannapolis; daughter Juanita Turcotte Blankenship, Atlanta, Ga.; sisters Lorene McBride, Athens, Ga., and Margaret Cobb, Holden Beach; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Tuesday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kearney.

Visitation: None.

John Dee Turner

NEW LONDON — John Dee Turner, 81, 44351-B Airport Road, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at the home of a son.

Born July 9, 1919, in Stanly County, Mr. Turner was a son of the late Dee and Mae Frances West Turner. Educated in the Stanly County schools, he had retired from McSwain Sawmill Co. in Porters. He attended Barringers Chapel Baptist Church in Norwood.

He was preceded in death by wife Judy Wall Turner.

Survivors include sons John D. Turner Jr., New London, and James L. Turner, Albemarle; sisters Lucy Lindsey and Ethel Horne, both of Thomasville; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Luke Church, Badin, conducted by Elder Larry Sanders. Burial, Oak View Cemetery, New London.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Leroy Wilson

KANNAPOLIS —Earnest Leroy Wilson, 72, 217 S. Rose Ave., died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at his home after three years of declining health and a month of serious illness.

Born April 20, 1928, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Wilson was a son of the late Charlie Leroy and Annie Cook Wilson.

He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Poston Perkins VFWPost 8989. He had retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon, Plant 1, cutting room.

Survivors include wife Barbara Payne Wilson; daughters Glenda Williams, Catherine Cline and Janet Lee Absher, all of Kannapolis; sons Bobby Wilson, Salisbury, and EddieWilson, China Grove; brothers Clyde Douglas Wilson and Denell Wilson, both of Kannapolis, and Carl Lee Wilson, Concord; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday,Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker and the Rev. Dr. Dale Tanner. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on South Rose Avenue.

Hope W. Randolph

ALBEMARLE — Hope Williams Randolph, 94, 625 Bethany Road, died Sunday (April 1, 2001) at Stanly Manor.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Christ Episcopal Church, Albemarle. Burial, Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, Calif. Memorial services will be held in Clover, S.C., and San Jose, Calif., at a later date.

Visitation: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church.
