Ervin ‘Bokee’ Borders

Ervin “Bokee” Borders, 64, 606 Candlewick Drive, died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2000) at his home after several years of declining health and a period of serious illness.

Born Nov. 25, 1935, in Statesville,Mr. Borders, a son of SarahScott Borders, Statesville, and the late Lester Borders, attended Morningside High School, Statesville. He was last employed by Fieldcrest Cannon plant 16.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Annie Lucille Everhardt Borders; sons Randy, Howard, Carl and Cornell Borders, all of Salisbury; daughters Joyce Houpe, Sylvia Boler, and Alice, Lacky and Annie Mae Borders, all of Salisbury; brother Troy Parker, Statesville; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Lonnie William Cockerham

WINSTON-SALEM — Lonnie William Cockerham, 92, 3160 Flanders Drive, father of Rowan County resident Patricia Turner, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Kimberly Park Holiness Church. Burial, Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-1 p.m. Friday at the church.

Ruth Stewart Crisp

LANDIS — Ruth Stewart Crisp, 85, 715 W. Ryder Ave., died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2000) at Spartanburg Regional Hospital, Spartanburg, S.C.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

The family will be at the home of daughter Joyce Michael, 402 Blackwelder St., China Grove.

 

Bernice Furr

ALBEMARLE — Bernice Lucille Russell Mauldin Furr, 85, 612 Rodgers St., died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 1, 1915, in Stanly County, Mrs. Furr, a daughter of the late John Columbus and Gustie Loulla Speights Russell, retired as a winder from American &Efird Mills.

She was a member of Old Fashion Mission Baptist Church, where she was pianist for many years.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clad Liston Mauldin, and second husband, DanielMonroe Furr. She was also preceded in death by stepsons Gerald Lloyd Mauldin and Walter Ray and Joseph Carroll Furr.

Survivors include sons DarrellWayneMauldin, Shallotte, Roger L. Mauldin, Swansboro, and Jimmy Lee Mauldin, New London; daughters Patricia honeycutt, Albemarle, and Brookshire Loulla Burris, New London; other stepsons Marshall Monroe “Pete” Furr, Charlotte, Jim Sheppard and Darrell Furr, both of Albemarle, and Roger Daniel Furr, Mount Pleasant; stepdaughter Maxine Sexton, Concord; 24 grandchildren; 15 step-grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Old Fashion Mission Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy West, the Rev. Dwight Huffman and Darrell Furr. Burial, Anderson Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Patricia Honeycutt, 612 Rogers St.

 

Albert ‘Al’ Hays

Albert “Al” Hays, 66, 611 Pinewood Ave., died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born March 22, 1934, in Greenwood, Miss., Mr. Hays was a son of the late John and Eldora Thomas Hays. He was educated in the Greenwood, Miss., schools and retired from the city of New Rochelle, N.Y.

He was a member of Oakland Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses and in fellowship with the Northeast Congregation.

Survivors include wife Edna Candy Hays; sons Albert Hays Jr., of the home, and Willie Mitchell and Walter Stinson, both of Spencer; daughters Mary Radcliff, Spencer, and Eldora and Mozell Hays, both of Salisbury; brother Willie Hays, New Rochelle, N.Y.; sister SarahJohnson, Greenwood, Miss.; and four grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Saturday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Robert Reese. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Joe Peris ‘Red’ Kendall Jr.

ALBEMARLE — Joe Peris “Red” Kendall Jr., 87, 33426 Old Salisbury Road, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Born Oct. 10, 1912, in Stanly County, Mr. Kendall, a son of the late Joe P. and Mary Avette Kendall, retired from Wiscassett Hosiery Mill Co.

He was a charter member of Green Memorial United Methodist Church. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include brother Rell Kendall, Norwood; and sisters Lorena K. Turner, Greensboro, Velma K. Howard, Albemarle, and Nell Avette K. Music, Seattle,Wash.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Green Memorial United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tony Allen and the Rev. Jimmy Eudy. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by Stanly County DAVRitual Team.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

Rev. James Renard Kirk

NEWBRUNSWICK, N.J. — James Renard Kirk, 46, a Lexington, N.C., native, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at Robert Wood University Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He is the son of James S. Kirk of Lexington. A graduate of Winston-Salem State and Shaw universities. The pastor of Sharon Baptist Church, he has resided in New Brunswick since 1988.

Kirk formerly pastored St. Luke Baptist Church, Salisbury, N.C., and Union Baptist Church, Lexington,N.C.

He was a member of the Black Leadership Conference and the Ministerial Alliance of New Brunswick and Vicinity. A trustee for the New Jersey Convent of Progressive Baptists, he was a former member of the board of directors of New Brunswick Tomorrow.

His ministry included inauguration of the Sharon Baptist Church Community Development Corp. He was a recipient of the W. Marcus Williams Annual Brotherhood Award. He was also affiliated with SBC Central New Jersey Substance Abuse Ministry and SBC-KLTC South Africa USA Inspirational Mass Choir.

He belonged to the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey, Middlesex Central Baptist Association, New Jersey Convention of Progressive Baptist and the District Union 1 of Central Jersey.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Phoebe Kirk; son Kelsey Maurice Kirk; brothers Tony P. Kirk, Louisville, Ky., and Gary Rosenboro, Salisbury, N.C.; and sister Vonshelia Kirk-Johnson, Lexington, N.C.

Services were held this morning at Sharon Baptist Church, with burial at Franklin Memorial Park, North Brunswick.

Anderson Funeral Service was in charge.

Betty P. Nesbit of Salisbury died Thursday (Sept. 28, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Elizabeth Miller Owen of Salisbury died Thursday (Sept. 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Patsy ‘Pat’ Sherrill

MOORESVILLE — Patsy “Pat” Brotherton Sherrill, 71, Pinewood Circle, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2000) at her home.

Born Sept. 25, 1929, in Catawba County, Mrs. Sherrill was a daughter of the late W. Carl and Lila Mae Howard Brotherton. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

A 1950 graduate of Lowrance School of Nursing, she was a health care professional in Mooresville for over 50 years. She had worked at various doctors’ offices, in the Mooresville City Schools and, prior to retirement, was director of nursing and administrator at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Mooresville.

Survivors include husband Boyce Jackson “Jack” Sherrill; son Boyce Jackson Sherrill II, Perry, Ga.; sister Kathryn “Kitty” Brewer, Charlotte; brother Robert “Bob” Kaylor Brotherton, Huntsville, Ala.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday,Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phil DeBerry. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.

Wayne Alfred ‘Pops’ Smith

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Wayne Alfred “Pops” Smith, 80, 706 Rogers Lake Road, who died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 15, 1919, in Vandergrift, Pa., Mr. Smith was a son of the late Herman C. and Mable Kunkle Smith. He was a charter member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He retired from R.M. Efird’s Construction after 24 years as a painter.

A former member of the National Guard, he worked as a supervisor in an ammunitions plant during World War II. He raised, showed and judged show pigeons since 1931 and was a member of High Point Pigeon Club. His pigeons were shown at the Cabarrus County Fair for 28 years.

A daughter, Barbara S. Lewis, and a son, Wayne David Smith, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife LaTrelle Fitzpatrick Smith; daughters Mary Sellers, Kannapolis, and Pamela Major, China Grove; stepdaughters Dee Smith, Denver and Frances “Frankie” Moore, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; stepson Jimmy Hester, Rockwell; brother Thoburn Smith, Indiana, Pa.; sister Bonnie Fyock, Export, Pa.; eight grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m.Friday, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Karl Aschman. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Ruby Flora Strawn Turner

OAKBORO — Ruby Flora Strawn Turner, 93, 21359 E. Eighth St., died Wednesday (Sept. 27, 2000)at her home.

Born April 23, 1907, in Union County, Mrs. Turner was a daughter of the late Marshall and Betty Harrell Strawn. She retired as an inspector from Cannon Mills, Kannapolis, and was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church.

Her husband, Walter S. Turner, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Walter Leamon Turner, Elgin, Ill., and Charlie M. Turner, Oakboro; daughters Betty Turner Meggs, Marshville, and Maxine T. Carter, Kannapolis; sister Avis Shaw, Monroe; nine grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 11 step-great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Martin and the Rev. Michael Taylor. Burial, Oakboro Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on East Eighth Street.
