You make the call: Umpire Dusty Dellinger from Salisbury shows a class how to make a ‘called third strike.’

ROCKWELL — Rockwell Elementary students recently spent a day on the diamond.

The school’s baseball day included a visit from Boll Weevils mascot, Bo, and two storytellers from Rowan Public Library.

An umpire with the AA Southern League showed off sports equipment and kids could practice throwing a ball at a target.

Leslie Holmes, an assistant teacher of exception children, sang the national anthem and the 263rd Combat Communications Squadron of the N.C. National Guard came from Badin to present the colors.

The event kicked off Rockwell Elementary’s accelerated reading program.

“They thoroughly enjoyed it,” assistant principal Jim Hayes said.

“I’ve had a lot of positive comments.”
