Obituaries

            Susie Lewis Branch

The funeral will be Thursday for Susie Lewis Branch, 80, Salisbury, who died Monday (Sept. 25, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born May 21, 1920, in Surry County, Mrs. Branch, a daughter of the late Felix Asbury and Sara Augusta Hall Jenkins, was educated in the Surry County school system.

Early in life, she was employed by Diez Awning and Tent Co. and was later a homemaker. She was a Baptist.

Her husband, Albert Branch, died Aug. 12, 1983.

Survivors include son James Vernon Lewis Jr., Atlanta, Ga.; daughter Jean Parrish, of the home; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler, pastor, Enon Baptist Church. Burial, 3 p.m. Thursday, family plot in Little Richmond Baptist Church cemetery, Dobson.

Visitation: At the home starting this evening at 6 and at the funeral home on Thursday from 10-11 a.m.

 

Roberta Donaho Goodwin

MOCKSVILLE — Roberta Donaho Goodwin, 79, East Lake Drive, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 26, 1921, in Eden, Mrs. Goodwin, a daughter of the late Horance Ernest and Bertha Duncan Donaho, was a graduate of Mitchell Junior College, Statesville. She later graduated with a degree in education from Flora McDonald College.

She taught in the Granville County, Durham County and Davie County schools.

Past president and member of Mocksville Women’s Club, she was an active member of Mocksville First PresbyterianChurch, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.

Her husband, Edward E. Goodwin, died Jan. 8, 1994.

Survivors include son Kevin Goodwin, Huntersville; daughter Susan McCollum, Mocksville; sisters Mary Neal, Pleasant Garden, and Caroline Chappel, Creekmoor; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Mocksville First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Earl Carter. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Burial, Rose Cemetery.

Visitation: None.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

Frank O. Hooper

The funeral will be Thursday for Frank Ollie Hooper, 78, 2413 Earley Circle, who died Monday (Sept. 25, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 2, 1922, in Franklin County, Ga., Mr. Hooper was a son of the late Hoyt Grady and Myrtie Duncan Hooper. He retired in 1988 from Cannon Mills Plant One, No. 7 spooler room.

An active member of Elwood Lane Free Will Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Lorene Wyatt Hooper, with whom he would have celebrated their 57th anniversary Nov. 10, 2000; daughter Cathy Hooper Steed, Mooresville; sisters Margaret Sechler and Frances Church, both of Kannapolis; brother Hoyt Grady Hooper Jr., Richmond,Va.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Elwood Lane Free Will Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Parrish and the Rev. Wayne Watson. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Earley Circle.

Nelle Honbarrier Perry

Nelle Honbarrier Perry, 74, Salisbury, died Monday (Sept. 25, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born Feb. 19, 1926, in Davie County, Mrs. Perry, a daughter of the late John William and Loula Williams Honbarrier, was educated in the Woodleaf schools. She graduated from Woodleaf High School and attended Rowan Nurses Training at Rowan Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Perry had been employed with Singer Sewing Co., Winston-Salem and Salisbury, and was a sewing instructor before her retirement.

She was a member of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church, where she was co-treasurer and helped with Bible school and was active in the Women of the Church Circle. She and her late husband, Everette D. Perry, who died Jan. 18, 1993, used to bring children from the church to their farm to see bald eagles.

Survivors include brothers James E. Honbarrier, Wilmington, and Donald E. Honbarrier, Belmont.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Goforth of Cooleemee Presbyterian Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Marvin Lee Roseman

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Marvin Lee Roseman, 90, 2982 Brantley Road, died Monday (Sept. 25, 2000) at Avante at Concord Nursing Center after nine months of illness.

Born May 16, 1910, in Rowan County, Mr. Roseman, a son of the late John and Annie Belle Basinger Roseman, retired in 1989 from Norfolk &Southern Railway after many years as a machinist. He earlier worked at the U.S. Naval Shipyards, Portsmouth,Va., and Charleston, S.C.

He was a member of West A Street Church of God since 1935.

Survivors include wife Addie Mae Stirewalt Roseman; sons the Rev. Garold L. Roseman and Terry A. Roseman, both of China Grove; brother Grady Roseman, Kannapolis; sister Glay Wilson, Kannapolis; one grandson; and one great-grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, West A Street Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Sam Crisp and the Rev. Garold L. Roseman. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Brantley Road.

Wayne ‘Pops’ Smith

KANNAPOLIS — Wayne Alfred “Pops” Smith, 80, 706 Rogers Lake Road, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

James Franklin Wishon

COOLEEMEE — James Wishon, 70, Cooleemee, died Monday (Sept. 25, 2000)at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born June 4, 1930, in Davie County, Mr. Wishon was a son of the late Josie McBride Whitley. He was a merchant and of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include wife Bette Bost Wishon; son James Franklin Wishon Jr., Cooleemee; half brother C.W. Whitley; and one granddaughter.

Services: 8 today, Davie Funeral Home chapel, Mocksville, conducted by Robert Creason. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 6-8 today at the funeral home.
