Former Corbin Hills pro wins Kannapolis tourney

KANNAPOLIS — The veteran team of Joe Lambert and Mark Andrew teamed to win its second straight Hooters Hugo 4-Ball golf tourney at the Kannapolis Country Club here Sunday.

Lambert, from Concord, and Andrew, from Albemarle, put together rounds of 64 on Saturday and 67 on Sunday for a 13-under-par 131 and a two-stroke victory.

“It’s a momentum thing,” said Andrew, former pro at CorbinHills Golf Club, where he left 15 years ago. “We just got it going. We brother-in-lawed and got it done.”

The 65-year-old Lambert made three birdies on Saturday and four on Sunday, while the 46-year-old Andrew had five birdies the first day and three in the final round.

Lambert and Andrew made only one bogey in the tournament on No. 9 on Sunday and birdied the same hole only once.

“We both birdied the 11th. I had knocked it about two feet from the hole and he made it from about 15, so mine was good,” said Lambert.

Andrew and Lambert won the title last year, defeating Salisbury’s Ryan Honeycutt and Kannapolis’Kent Chamberlain in a sudden-death playoff. Honeycutt and Chamberlain were playing with Andrew and Lambert yesterday.

“We had them one (stroke) up going into the round, and they birdied 2, 3 and 4. We suddenly found ourselves one down,” said Lambert.

Lambert, director of financial development at Northeast Medical Center, credited his partner with playing well when it counted most yesterday.

“He covered me with some pars that we badly needed. Coming down the stretch, he parred 17 and 18, and I was gone.He took it to the barn for us,” exclaimed Lambert.

Andrew pointed out that the high rough made the course play more difficult and had a warning for pro golfers coming here next month.

“The Tour School is going to have a heck of a time if they leave the rough up like this,” said Andrew, who is in the printing business (Smith&Jones) in Albemarle.

Four teams finished two strokes back at 133. Second place on a scorecard playoff went to Concord’s Brian Westveer and Allen White, who had rounds of 68 and 65. Third-place Mike Jones and Leo Wolf, former Hugo winners from Charlotte, had scores of 67 and 66. Honeycutt and Chamberlain(65-68) were fourth, followed by Salisbury’s RickHouston and Statesville’s Lance Waggener (67-67).

  • Mills takes men’s title at McCanless with 145

Mike Mills won the men’s championship at McCanless Golf Club on Sunday by three strokes over Lee Frick.

Mills put together rounds of 73 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday for a 5-over-par 145. Frick shot a 148, while third-place Scott Curry finished at 149.

Tim Wagoner won the first flight with a 157, while Barth Tesh finished second at 158.

Preston Jones was the second flight winner with a 167, while Andy Lombard took third with a 179.

The women’s title went to Marsha Rodgers, who had rounds of 93 and 91 for a 184. Jan Godwin was second at 197.

  • n Houston, Lambert win Warrior member-guest

LANDIS — Rick Houston and Joe Lambert won the recent member-guest tournament at Warrior Golf Club, edging Sam Ramsey and Mark Andrew on a scorecard playoff with a birdie on the first hole.

Each team shot 66s in the first round and 68s in the second round for 134 totals in the two-day tourney.
