John Alvah Bridges

The funeral will be Tuesday for John Alvah Bridges, 88, 227 Dunham Ave., who died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after seven months of serious illness.

Born May 23, 1912, in Grover, Mr. Bridges, a son of the late John Hutchinson and Pearl Dare Allen Bridges, was educated in the Grover schools. Retired from Fiber Industries, now KoSa, he was in the grocery business in Shelby for over 30 years. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

His wife, Elizabeth Waggoner Bridges, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Fonda Bridges Fortenberry, Sophia, and Beverly Bridges Maidment, Cornelius; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Grover Cemetery, Grover, conducted by the Rev. Carroll Robinson.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the home on Dunham Ave.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Clinton Watts Culp

BADIN — Clinton Watts “Clinton” Culp, 17, 46850 Beach Road, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born July 1, 1983, in Charlotte, Mr. Culp was a son of Hank and Judy Watts Culp of Badin. He was a junior at North Stanly High School.

A member of New London United Methodist Church, Badin Lake Ski Club and the American Water Ski Association, he was the North Carolina Boys IISlalom Record Holder. He won the 1996 state record and was anational slalom champion.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother John Henry Culp, Badin; sister Amy Culp Shelton, New London; and paternal grandparentsHenry W. and Jewel Rogers Culp Jr., New London.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, New London United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Pat Jenkins. Burial, New London Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home,Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home on Beach Road.

 

H.V. ‘Jenny’ Hoover

H.V. “Jenny” Hoover, 51, 135 Skysail Road, Anchor Downs, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2000) at her home.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Other arrangements are incomplete.

 

Floyd Wilson Overcash

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Tuesday for Floyd Wilson Overcash, 87, 401 N. Enochville Ave., who died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000)at Manor House, Concord.

Born Feb. 7, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Overcash, a son of the late Caleb Daniel and Anna Lentz Overcash, was educated in the Rowan County schools. He was a former police officer and had retired as an inspector from Cannon Mills finishing department.

He was a member of St. Enoch Lutheran Church.

Survivors include wife Flora Alverdia Dagenhardt Overcash; son Larry W. Overcash, Kannapolis; daughter Kay O. Goins, Spruce Pine; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Enoch Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John Mack Beam. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,China Grove.

Rachel Presley Pierce

CONCORD — The funeral will be Tuesday for Rachel Presley Pierce, 85, 3571 Rankin Road, who died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at her home after three months of declining health.

Born April 18, 1915, in Monroe County, Tenn., Mrs. Pierce was a daughter of the late Manuel and Mary Bell Arp Presley. She was a homemaker and charter member of Memorial Baptist Church.

Her husband, Floyd Lee Pierce, died Jan. 15, 1965. A son, Matt Balane Pierce, and daughter, Mar Ellen Shoemaker, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Gene Pierce, Concord, and Randall Pierce, Harrisburg; daughters Mildred Lindner, Reliance, Tenn., Mavis Chavez, Landis, and Connie Pierce, Salisbury; brothers W. R. Presley, Alcoa,Tenn., Charlie Presley, Kannapolis, Elden Murr, Concord, and Elmer Murr, Marietta, Ga.; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home chapel, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Bill Bauguess. Burial, Greenlawn Cemetery, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

Lorraine Mize Stilwell

Lorraine Mize Stilwell, 83, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2000) at Autumn Care Center, Mocksville.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Adam Eligah Summers

COOLEEMEE —Adam Eligah Summers, 82, Cross Street, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born July 11, 1918, in Davie County, Mr. Summers, a son of the late Cappie Oscar and Lundie Lowder Summers, was educated in the Davie County schools. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

A retired carpenter, he was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Hazel Sheek Call Summers; daughter Patricia McBride, Mocksville; stepsons Randy and Tommy Call, both of Mocksville; stepdaughters Yvonne Norris, Yadkinville, Carol Smith, Thomasville, Phyllis Smith, Mocksville; sister Ola Poplin, Mocksville; a grandson; and a number of step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 7 p.m. Tuesday, Victory Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev.Shelby Harbour and the Rev.Rodney Smith. Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Legion Memorial Park.

Visitation: At the church after the funeral service. At other times the family will be at the home on Cross Street.

Jack Junior ‘Dood’ Waller

STATESVILLE — Jack Junior “Dood” Waller, 72, 203 S. Greenbriar Road, died Sunday (Sept. 24, 2000) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Jan. 26, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Waller was a son of the late Lonnie Thomas and Eva Curlee Waller. He was a graduate of Cleveland High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and the Statesville Moose Lodge.

Retired from Southern Screw Co. after 33 years, he sold produce in the Statesville area and was know as the “Mater Man.”

Survivors include son Terry Waller, with whom he made his home; daughters Juanita W. Lazenby, Statesville, and Gayle W. Allen, Harmony; sister Mary K. Schenk, Georgia; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren,

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Nicholson Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Helton. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery. Full military honors by VFW Post 2031, Littlefield Chapter 28 of the DAV and AmericanLegion Post 217.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Terry and Carla Waller, 203 S. Greenbriar Road.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.
