Obituaries

            John Alvah Bridges

John Alvah Bridges, 88, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000).

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Claude Garland Bruce

Claude Garland Bruce, 83, 3120 Statesville Blvd., died Friday (Sept. 22, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center of Salisbury.

Born Sept. 24, 1916, in Roanoke, Va., Mr. Bruce was a son of the late Clara Sink and Samuel T. Bruce.

He attended Roanoke, Va., schools and was chief engineer at the Hefner VA Medical Center before retiring in 1981, after 34 years at the facility. Mr. Bruce was in the U.S Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a member of Enon Baptist Church and a mason.

Survivors include wife Muriel Gearhart Bruce, whom he married June 19, 1953; sons Edwin Dale Bruce, Salisbury, Claude A. Bruce, Lewisville, Michael L. Bruce, Turkey Creek, Ky., and Jan G. Bruce, Salem, Va.; brother Roy Bruce, Lakeland, Fla.; sisters Juanita B. Morris, Roanoke, Va., and Dorothy B. Spencer, Sebastian, Fla.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:2 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Trexler, minister of Enon Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with military honors by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

Thomas A. Gaines

GRANITE QUARRY — Thomas A. Gaines, 66, 955 White Rock Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury, after several weeks of serious illness.

The family will be at the home of a cousin, Larry Gaines, 317 Yost Farm Road, Granite Quarry.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mary Hope Hackett

Mary Hope Hackett, 84, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000)at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Julia Smith Huneycutt

ALBEMARLE — Julia Elizabeth Smith Rogers Huneycutt, 81, 22445 Quail Ridge Road, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000)at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 8, 1918, in Oakboro, Mrs. Huneycutt was a daughter of the late Dallie Ida Morton Smith and Charlie Green Smith. Mrs. Huneycutt was a retired inspector with Federal Pacific and a member of Union Grove Baptist Church.

Mrs. Huneycutt was preceded in death by husbands Gilbert T. Rogers and Charlie J. Huneycutt.

Survivors include sons John James and Thomas Gilbert Rogers, both of Albemarle; step- daughter Betty Sue H. Little, Albemarle; brother Curtis Smith, Oakboro; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Union Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lee Church and the Rev. Lowell Brown. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Rudolph Joseph “Rudy” Nassar

Rudolph Joseph “Rudy” Nassar, 76, of Salisbury, died Friday (Sept. 22, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after 10 years of declining health and two years of serious illness.

Born May 30, 1924, in Salisbury, Mr. Nassar was a son of the late Edna Saba and Tom Nassar. He graduated from Boyden High School in 1941 and attended N.C. State University. Mr. Nassar was employed in the family business Nassar Fruit Stand and was a member of Salisbury Moose lodge and Salisbury Elks Lodge. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include brother Odell Nassar, Wyckoff, N.J.; and sister Agnes Nassar Graver, Salisbury, with whom he made his home.

Services:Mass of resurrection, 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Clements. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation:Prayer service, 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Memorials: Sacred Heart Church, 128 N. Fulton St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

 

Rachel Presley Pierce

CONCORD —Rachel Presley Pierce, 85, 3571 Rankin Road, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000) at her residence.

Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Irene Moore Wiles

ALBEMARLE — Irene Moore Wiles, 83, 34277 Rockfield Road, died Saturday (Sept. 23, 2000)at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Harnett County, Mrs. Wiles was a daughter of the late Lovie Byrd and Walsh Moore. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Mrs. Wiles was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hesley Wiles.

She is survived by a half-sister Ruth Johnson, Benson.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rob Roberts.

Visitation:7-8 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of a niece, Hilda Pollard, 34377 Rockfield Road, Albemarle.
