Coyt R. Halverstadt, Los Angeles, Calif., a
former Salisbury resident, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) in Los Angeles.
Mr. Halverstadt was affiliated with John Calvin
Presbyterian Church, the Men’s Saturday Breakfast Club and Cardinal Squares.
Survivors include wife Mary Halverstadt; son
Richard and Dale Halverstadt; and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at a later date.

Coley Gene Kerley
KANNAPOLIS — Funeral services were held his
morning for Coley Gene Kerley, 56, 617 Hillside St., who died Wednesday (Sept.
20, 2000).
Born Aug. 30, 1944, in Cabarrus County, Mr.
Kerley was a son of the late Rueben Blanco and Maggie Beaver Kerley. He was
employed with Defender Painting at Pillowtex Plant 4.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during the
Vietnam War and also served with the National Guard in the Desert Storm Gulf
War.
Survivors include wife Maggie Beaver Kerley; son
Michael Gene Kerley,Concord; and sister Kay Pullian, Kannapolis.
Graveside services were held at 11 this morning
at the National Cemetery, Salisbury. The Rev. Billy Payne officiated. Military
rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.
The family will be at the home on Hillside
Street.

Thelma Scercy Lomax
CHINA GROVE — Thelma Scercy Lomax, 65, 880
Scercy Road, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist
Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a year of declining health.
Born Feb. 18, 1935, in Rowan County, Mrs. Lomax
was a daughter of Annie Palmer Scercy, China Grove, and the late Mitchel W.
Scercy. Employed by Cannon Mills Plant 1 for 30 years, she later worked at
Wiscassett Mills, Albemarle, for many years until she retired in 1997.
She attended Bethel Wesleyan Church, Kannapolis.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include
husband Spencer A. Lomax.; sons Spencer A. Lomax Jr. and Lynn Lomax, both of
Mooresville, and Rick Lomax, Hickory; daughter Valerie Galloway, China Grove;
and eight grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral
Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Ronald Rider. Burial, West Lawn
Memorial Park.

Mable Emma Fink Plott
ALBEMARLE — Mable Emma Fink Plott, 84, 3906
Southern Ave., Baltimore, Md., formerly of the Millingport community, died
Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at Genesis-Perring Parkway Nursing Home.
Born May 27, 1916, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Plott
was a daughter of the late Thomas and Mollie Bonds Fink. She was a homemaker. A
member of Salem United Methodist Church, she was also a member of the Ladies
Circle Club.
Her husband,Carr Plott, preceded her in death.
Survivors include brother Lynn fink, Concord; and
sister Mary Smith, Baltimore, Md.

June Benz Schmitt
June Benz Schmitt, 76, Salisbury, died Thursday
(Sept. 21, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born July 12, 1924, in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mrs.
Schmitt was a daughter of the late Charles and Vina Datsun Benz. She was
educated in the Brooklyn, N.Y., schools and was a graduate of Pace College,
Manhattan, N.Y.
She retired in 1984 after 32 years with New York
Telephone Co., where she was a business office supervisor and training manager.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Merry Hearts, Rowan Helping
Ministries and Bell Telephone Pioneers.
Her husband, Charles J. Schmitt, died Feb. 4,
1962.
Survivors include son Craig J Schmitt, Salisbury;
daughter Claudia A. Kolar, Cresson, Pa.; and five grandchildren.
Services: Funeral Mass of Resurrection, 11 a.m.

Connie LaFoy Sloop
MOORESVILLE — Connie LaFoy Sloop, 69, Brookwood
Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation,
Mooresville.
Born Oct. 3, 1930, in Iredell County, Mrs. Sloop
was a daughter of the late John H. and Zanie Wilson LaFoy. She was a member of
Mooresville Church of God and had worked as a spinner at Chemspun for 15 years.
Her husband, Haskell “Hump” Sloop, died in
1983.
Survivors include daughter ToniChristy,
Cleveland; sons Butch Sloop, North Augusta, S.C., and Terry Sloop,
Hendersonville; and four grandchildren.

Mary Davis Torbush
Mary Doris Davis Torbush, 79, 421 Grove St., died
Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at the home of son Bill Torbush, 360 Acorn Oak Road,
after a lengthy illness.
Born Oct. 17, 1920, in Atlanta, Ga., Mrs. Torbush,
a daughter of the late John and Margie Kirby Davis, was educated in Atlanta
schools. She retired after 12 years with Dietary Services at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church
and the United Methodist Women, she was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of
Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006, Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post 342
and Spencer Moose Lodge.
Her husband, Robert Lee Torbush, died in November
1992.
Survivors include other sons David Torbush,
Mascoutha, Ill., Robert D. Torbush, Soddy Daisy, Tenn., and Jerry Torbush,
Hickory; daughter Mary T. Hendren, Mooresville; brothers John Thomas Davis,
Panama City, Fla., and Ellis Davis, Atlanta, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; and 14
great-grandchildren.

TAYLORSVILLE — Naomi Steinmetz Weddington, 75,
20 Isenhour Park Road, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000)at Alexander Community
Hospital.
Her husband, the Rev.Tom Weddington, a Concord
native, was a former pastor of Amity Lutheran Church, Cleveland.
