Rev. Vance M. Daniel

The Rev. Vance Miller Daniel, who started Messiah Lutheran Church here, died July 29, 2000, in Austin, Texas, where he had lived for more than 20 years.

Miller was born Aug. 5, 1918, in Salisbury, son of the late Brady Ketchie Daniel and Lorena Miller Daniel.

He was a member of the Boyden High School Class of 1935. He graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College and Southern Lutheran Seminary, and founded Messiah Lutheran Church before he was ordained in 1943. Through the years, he served congregations in North Carolina, Georgia and Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Poole Daniel, whom he married June 3, 1944; daughter Rebecca D. Matheny of Houston; and one grandchild.

Memorials:Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 200 W. Anderson Lane, Austin, Texas 78752, designated for a columbarium or Gethsemane Children’s Ministry.

 

William Berry Dishman

KANNAPOLIS — William Berry Dishman, 62, 1904 West A St., died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born Aug. 2, 1938, in Iredell County, Mr. Dishman was the son of Andrew and Viola Lowder Dishman. He was employed with Pillowtex-Fieldcrest Cannon for 43 years as a supervisor in towel packaging. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

A grandson preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Jo Goodnight Dishman; daughters Beth Dishman, of the home, Angie Bunton, Mooresville, and Robin Kale, Greenville, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Friday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Coley Kerley

KANNAPOLIS — Coley Kerley, 56, 617 Hillside St., died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000).

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Donald Claude Mast

BANNER ELK — Donald Claude Mast, 70, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at Vencor Hospital, Greensboro.

Born July 23, 1930, in Watauga County, Mr. Mast was a son of PearlPhillips Mast, Banner Elk, and the late John Ira Mast. He was a Baptist. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He retired as a hospital orderly.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include daughter Sherry Brady, Gold Hill; son Donald L. Mast,Gold Hill; sister Okelee Taylor, Wilkesboro; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hampton Funeral Home chapel, Boone, conducted by the Rev. Richard Trivette. Burial, Mast Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Frances Miller Mayhew

TROUTMAN — Frances Louise Miller Mayhew, 75, 123 Old Train Drive, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at her home.

Born July 20, 1925, in Iredell County, Mrs. Mayhew was a daughter of the late Garland O. and Mary Bethel Miller. She retired from Janson Inc.

Her husband, Jessie Mayhew, died in 1972.

Survivors include son Billy Mayhew, Troutman; daughters Ann Miller, Troutman, Sue Doster, Landis, and Lou Loftin, Catawba; sisters Aileen Miller, Troutman, and Betty Coley, Mooresville; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Troutman Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Connor Lambert. Burial, Old Perth Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Neill Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Cletus Moose

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Friday for Cletus A. Moose, 73, who died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) at The Meadows of Rockwell.

Born June 25, 1925, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Moose was a son of the late Charles A. and Jennie Taylor Moose. He was a member of Grace Lowerstone United Church of Christ.

Survivors include sister Ethel Rice, Concord; and brother Ray Moose, Rockwell.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Grace Lowerstone United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Walter Patten and the Rev. Charles Seigler. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Barney Benson Mullis

STANFIELD—Barney Benson Mullis, 88, 14740 Hatley Burris Road, died Wednesday (Sept. 20, 2000) at his home.

Born May 19, 1912, in Union County, Mr. Mullis was a son of the late Sarah Ellen Mullis. He was employed in the card room at Tuscarora Yarns and was a member of Indian Hill Presbyterian Church.

His wife, Minnie Emily Thomas Mullis, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons Rex and Glenn Mullis, both of Stanfield, Warren Mullis, Mooresville, and Leroy and Archie Mullis, Cassatt, S.C.; daughters Dianne Pace, Monroe, Ruby Mullis, Stanfield, and Rita Little, Oakboro; sister Alice Furr, Stanfield; 27 grandchildren; and 53 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Indian Hill Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Brundin and the Rev. Larry Linker. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Midland. At other times the family will be at the home of Glenn Mullis, 14740 Hatley Burris Road.

Charlotte Overcash

KANNAPOLIS — Charlotte Brady Overcash, 71, 104 Lakewood Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 21, 2000) at her home.

Catherine D. Robinson

The funeral will be Saturday for Catherine Dunkel Robinson, 77, 12 Walton Place, who died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at her home after several years of dec lining health.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Gethsemane Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.L.Stowe.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Laura Mae M. Stinson

The funeral will be Saturday for Laura Mae McCluney Stinson, 47, 105 E. Broad St., who died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000)at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born Aug. 6, 1953, in Lincolnton, Mrs. Stinson, a daughter of the late Charles Clayton and Alvenia Little McCluney, attended Dunbar High School. She had been employed at Kiddie Land Day Care Center.

She was a member of Southern City AMEZion Church, the Spiritual Choir, trustee board, flower and estimation committees, was secretary/treasurer at the quarterly conference, chaplain of evangelism and a former Miss Southern City.

A daughter, Meria Lechelle Stinson, died June 27, 1999.

Survivors include fiance J.C. Campbell; son Odell Stinson Jr., Salisbury; daughter Benita Stinson Robinson, Salisbury; granddaughter being reared in the home Latricia Lechelle Stinson; brothers Emory McCluney, East Spencer, and Charles Lockheart, Middletown, Conn.; sister Zettie Mae Johnson,East Spencer; and two other grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Southern City AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. Rollins Graham. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Rev. Dr. Morgan W. Tann

CONCORD — The
Rev. Dr. Morgan W. Tann, 85, 7701 Untz Road, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) in Baltimore, Md.

His wife, the former Marie Patterson, was a Granite Quarry resident.

Mr. Tann served the AMEZion Church in various capacities since his deacon ordination in 1947. Retired, he had been the editor of “The Star of Zion” magazine.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Gethsemane AMEZion Church, Charlotte, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David Baker.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the church.

Long &Son Mortuary Service, Charlotte, is in charge.

 

Zarah Louise Little Ward

KANNAPOLIS —- Zarah Louise Little Ward, 79, 1032 Edwards Circle, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 30, 1920, in Union County, Mrs. Ward, a daughter of the late James Hoyte and Dora Alice Martin Martin, was a homemaker.

She was an active member of Brookdale Baptist Church and an honored member of Rebecca. She was involved in many charities, including Leprosy, Russian-Jewish immigrants and the Methodist Children’s Home.

Her husband, Ira J. Little, died Sept. 19, 1965, and a son, Bernard J. Little, died in 1999.

Survivors include son Ira J. “Joe” Little Jr., Kannapolis; daughters Aviva Ann Elizabeth Bruyer, Asheville, and Janet Sue Ferrell, Brians Road, Md.; sisters Barbara Martin Jarvis, Clemmons, and Mary Martin Howard, Kannapolis; brother Max M. Martin, China Grove; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Brookdale Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ken Savage and the Rev. Doug Pierce. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Mary Howard, 316 Elwood St.

Beatrice Burris White

ALBEMARLE — Beatrice Burris White, 75, Wilson, formerly of Stanly County, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at North Carolina Special Care Home.

BornMarch 31, 1925, in Stanly County, Mrs. White was a daughter of the late Preston O. and Lela Austin Burris.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Hunter.

Visitation: After the service on Saturday.

Clifton Poteat Winecoff

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Clifton Poteat Winecoff, 84, 4602 Rogers Lake Road, who died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at the home of daughter Judith Morris, 1355 Morriswood Drive, China Grove.

Born Nov. 1, 1915, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Winecoff, a son of the late David Kimball and Mattie Poteat Winecoff, was a member of Central Baptist Church. After he retired as a truck driver fromCentral Motor Lines, he began working for Piedmont Concrete Block Co.

His wife, Mary Nantz Winecoff, died April 19, 1998.

Survivors include other daughter Zinna Brown, China Grove; sons Michael Pless and Boyce Winecoff, both of China Grove, and Randy Winecoff, Kannapolis; 12 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Central Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev.Curtis Parker and the Rev. Steve Sexton. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Judith Morris.
