Quinn Miller Beaver

ROCKWELL — Quinn Miller Beaver, 87, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at The Meadows Retirement Center.

Born Feb. 19, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Beaver, a daughter of the late Charles Alexander and Viola Earnhardt Miller, was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a homemaker.

A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, she was a member of WELCA, Arthur Shipton Sunday School Class and a former member of the choir.

Her husband, Carlee A. Beaver, died in August 1977, and a son, Donald W. Beaver, died in 1936.

Survivors include sons Bobby D. Beaver, Rockwell, Harold D. Beaver,Statesville, Gary A. Beaver, Lexington, and Alan L. Beaver, Granite Quarry; daughter Lana Beaver Moore, Salisbury; brothers Edwin Miller, Salisbury, and Charles Miller, Rockwell; sisters Anice Morgan, Spencer, and Faye Terry,Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.BruceSheeks. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Alan L. Beaver, Granite Quarry.

Sylvia T. Bost

The funeral will be Friday for Sylvia T. Bost, 76, South Pasadena, Fla., formerly of Salisbury, who died Friday (Sept. 8, 2000) at Bayfront Medical Center in Florida.

Born in Warren, Mich., Mrs. Bost moved to Salisbury in 1969. She worked for First Union National Bank in Salisbury for many years before retiring in 1980.

She married Vernon C. Bost, the founder of Delta Electric Supply Co., later known as Desco. They relocated to Sarasota, Fla. In 1992, after her husband’s death, she moved to South Pasadena, Fla.

Mrs. Bost was a member of St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, St. Pete Beach, the Episcopal Church Women and the Triangles. She was chairperson for the Church Periodical Club and a member of Treasure Island Tennis and Yacht Club.

Her first husband, Dr. Robert Donovan Gordon, died in 1970. Her second husband, Vernon C. Bost, died April 1, 1992.

Survivors include son Robert D. Gordon, Asheville; daughters Paula Gordon Jones, Charlotte, and Beth S. Gordon, Treasure Island, Fla.; stepdaughter Brenda Bost White, Salisbury; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 12 p.m. Friday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern. The body has been cremated. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Ruth Regina Cress

MOUNT PLEASANT — Ruth Regina Cress, 99, Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home, formerly of 1340 N. Main St., died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born April 17, 1901, in Mount Pleasant, Miss Cress, a daughter of the late C.R.P. and Frances Walker Cress, was a 1921 graduate of Mont Amoena Seminary. She was also educated at Chapel Hill, Appalachian College and Catawba College, Salisbury.

A retired elementary school teacher, she taught in the Davidson County and Lexington City schools for 21 years, with the Cabarrus County schools for 21 years, Rowan County schools for two years and the RandolphCounty schools for a year.

She was a life member of the National Education Association, a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society.

Miss Cress was also a member of Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity and a former member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Concord.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Lutheran Church of theHoly Trinity, conducted by the Rev. Donald Deal. Burial, St. John’s Lutheran Church cemetery, Concord.

Visitation: 9:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday, Gordon Funeral Home.

Charles Leslie Hoilman

BURGAW — Charles Leslie Hoilman, 54, formerly of China Grove, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at Pender Memorial Hospital, Burgaw.

Born Feb. 6, 1946, in Avery County, Mr. Hoilman was the son of the late Emmett and Sophia Buchannan Monday. He was employed with Estes Express Lines and was a member of Castle Hayne Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Pamela Ann Hoilman; children Cynthia Ehlers, Woodleaf, and John Curtis Hoilman and Angela Cheree Hoilman, both of the home; brothers Rom and Oscar Hoilman, both of Florida; sister Nettie Mae Daniel, Florida; and two grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 today, Castle Hayne Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Fowler.

John Gilmer ‘Bud’ Hoover

LEXINGTON —John Gilmer “Bud” Hoover, 69, 327 Grubb Road, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at his home after several months of declining health.

Born Oct. 20, 1930, in Davidson County, Mr. Hoover, a son of the late Frank and Laura Brown Hoover, attended Dunbar High School. He retired from Young-Hinkle Furniture and was a life member of Yadkin Star Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Katherine Woodberry Hoover; sons Jerry Lewis and Larry Wayne Hoover, both of Lexington; daughters Kathryn WE. Perkins, Audrey H. Medley, Claudette White and Linda Carol Hoover, all of Lexington; brother Baxter L. Hoover, Lexington; sisters Ruth Staplefoot, Gladys Holmes, Katy Evans, Lois Andrews, all of Lexington, and Perline Moss, Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Yadkin Star Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Boiser. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30-3 p.m. Thursday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington. The body may be viewed from 12-8 today.

 

Linda Kay Carter Howard

MOCKSVILLE — Linda Kay Carter Howard, 57, U.S. Hwy. 64 E., died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Aug. 8, 1943, in Davie County, Mrs. Howard was a daughter of the late Clarence Ray and Pauline Barnhardt Carter. She had worked with Gravely Tractor Co. and was a member of Fork Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband George Wesley Howard; sons Gregory Eugene Vest, Arkansas, Timothy Ray Vest, Clemmons, and Bradley Cedric Vest, Mocksville; daughter Angela Penland,Advance; brothers Leon, Kenneth and Paul Carter, all of Mocksville; and two grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Thursday,Fork Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Morrison. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Helen B. Leonard

LEXINGTON — Helen Berniece Bates Leonard, 80, Holt Street, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare,Salisbury, after several months of declining health.

Born Oct. 31, 1919, in Davidson County, Mrs. Leonard was a daughter of the late Lonnie Rogers and Ida Bell Lambeth Bates. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.

Her husband, Robert Elmer Leonard, died in February 1979.

Survivors include daughter Betty Waller, Woodleaf; sisters Ruth Horne, Southmont, and Reba McCarn, Lexington; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Davidson Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Alvin Everhart. Burial,Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Holt Street.

 

 

Catherine D. Robinson

Catherine Dunkel Robinson, 77, 12 Walton Place, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at her home after several years of declining health.

Born Feb. 18, 1923, in Gloversville, N.Y., Mrs. Robinson was a daughter of the late William and Delia Eliza Beckman Dunkel. She was a graduate of -public schools in Gloversville and Fulton Montgomery Community College, New York City.

She was a counselor and a member of the Elks and the AMEMethodist Church.

Survivors include daughters Terry Ann McNeal, Lawrenceburg, Tenn., Sandra Mae Van Slakye, Nashua, N.H., Barbara Jean Stratton, Gloversville, N.Y., Connie Lynn Richardson, Schenectady, N.Y., Toni Marie Robinson, Salisbury, and Lisa Ann Truett, Newport News, Va.; sisters Leona Miller, Schenectady,N.Y., and Francis Springfield, Gloversville, N.Y.; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Joel K. Seabolt

KANNAPOLIS — Joel K. Seabolt, 43, died Tuesday (Sept. 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 10, 1956, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Seabolt was a son of Dreyfus M. and Mary HarrelsonSeabolt.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brother Ron Seabolt; and sisters Lynette Cannon and Sharon Seabolt.

Services: 7 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial will be at a later date.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mamie Viola Strong

HUNTERSVILLE — Mamie Viola Strong, 92, Huntersville, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000).

Born Sept. 26, 1907, in Cramerton, Gastonia, Mrs. Strong was the daughter of the late Frank and Sadie Davis Currence. She was educated in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools and had retired from Geico Insurance Co. She was a member of Catawba Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include son William Frank Strong; daughter Sadie Toney; sisters Frankie Henderson, Beulah Reid, Helen Bennett, Barbara Brown, all of Salisbury, and Novella Winford, Greensboro; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 today, Grier Funeral Service chapel, Charlotte.

Visitation: Immediately after the service at the home of a granddaughter, 9824 Feldbank Drive, Charlotte.

 

James A. Walker Jr.

GRANITE QUARRY — The funeral will be Friday for James A. Walker Jr., 67, 703 Hwy. 52, who died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 30, 1933, in Fairfield County, S.C., Mr. Walker, a son of the late James A. Walker, attended Bythewood School, Fairfield County, S.C.

Retired from Hoechst Celanese, he was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church and the Men’s Choir. He was also a member of the Granite Quarry Men’s Club and a former member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Ridgeway, S.C.

His wife, Daisy L. Brown Walker, died Feb. 9, 1986.

Survivors include sons Larry A. Walker, Los Angeles, Calif., Ronald D. Walker, Jefferson,Ga., Reginald W. and Keith L. Walker, both of Granite Quarry, and Timothy D. Walker, Salisbury; daughter Sandra D. Walker, Granite Quarry; brother Ernest Walker, Ridgeway, S.C.; sisters Cora Miller and Leather Belton, both of Ridgeway, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, East Spencer, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston. Burial, Antioch Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 1 p.m. Friday, Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Ruby Lee Wiggins

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Ruby Lee Wiggins, 82, Big Elm Retirement Center, who died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at the nursing center.

Born May 22, 1918, in Colquitt, Ga., Mrs. Wiggins was a daughter of the late James Walter and Beulah Lambert Lee. She moved to Kannapolis from Valdosta, Ga., in 1992 and had been a nurses aid with S. George Medical Center. She was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Kiffin C. Moore, and children, Veldosie Moore and KiffinClonager Moore, preceded her in death. Her second husband, Eugene Wiggins, died in 1992.

Survivors include stepmother Dollie O. Lee, Kannapolis; stepdaughters Imogene Kenyon, Betty W. Dyal and Wanda G. Wiggins, Valdosta, Ga.; stepson John E. Wiggins, Lake Park, Ga.; brothers Austin A. and Robert C. Lee, both of Kannapolis; sister Hazel Lee Stancil, Kannapolis; 10 stepgrandchildren; and eight stepgreat-grandchildren.

Services: 8 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette and the Rev. Richard Keasler. Burial, 2 p.m. Friday, New Salem United Methodist Church, Statesville.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Hazel Stancil, 112 White Ave.
