Lavonia Hendrix Crowder

KANNAPOLIS —Lavonia Hendrix Crowder, 86, 605 Cook St., died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 14, 1914, in Candler County,Ga., Mrs. Crowder was a daughter of the late Charlie and Lessie Brown Hendrix. She retired from Fieldcrest Cannon No. 6 weave room. A lifetime member of Centerview Baptist Church, she taught and led Sunday school classes for 4- and 5-year-olds.

Her husband, H.J. “Red” Crowder, died in 1993. A son, James Crowder, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include other sons Earl Crowder, Mineral Springs, Harold Crowder, Kannapolis, and Tom Crowder, Star; daughters Mary Scott, Kannapolis, and Doris Cauble, Charlotte; sister Leola Diggs, Kannapolis; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. William Rash. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Linda Kay Carter Howard

MOCKSVILLE — Linda Kay Carter Howard, Mocksville, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Whitney ‘Whit’ Kluttz

The funeral will be Wednesday for Whitney “Whit” William Kluttz, who died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a month of serious illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1908, in Rowan County, Mr. Kluttz was a son of the late David Alexander and Augustus Craige Kluttz. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

Retired from Martin Marietta Stone Co., he had earlier worked for Southern Railway. He was a member of Union Lutheran Church, Agner-Efird Sunday school class and Good Timers Club.

His wife, Ida Mae Surratt Kluttz, died Feb. 22, 1991.

Survivors include son Glenn Kluttz, Spartanburg, S.C.; daughters Sarah Holshouser, Spencer, and Doris Kluttz, Rockwell; sister Nannie Terleton, Salisbury; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Union Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor, and the Rev. C.P. Fisher. Members of the Agner-Efird Sunday school class will be seated as a group. Burial in family plot in the church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Sarah Holshouser, Spencer.

‘Rod’ Lakey

LEXINGTON —Rodwell “Rod” Elford Lakey, 78, Haden Grove Church Road, Linwood, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after three months of illness.

Born Dec. 18, 1921, in Davie County, Mr. Lakey was a son of the late Gilmer and Mary Beeman Lakey. He retired as a carpenter from Triangle Construction.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Amvets Post 13. He was also a member of Greers Chapel United Methodist Church.

A son, Douglas Lakey, died April 7, 1998.

Survivors include wife Kathryn Swicegood Lakey; brothers Gilbert and John Lakey, both of Salisbury, Roy Lakey, Lexington, and Lester Lakey, Linwood; sisters Willie Stewart and Ruth Story, both of Linwood, Pauline Nelms, Royston,Ga., and Frances Corriher, Mooresville; one grandson and one step-granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington, conducted by Dr. Ronald Mann. Burial, Mount Carmel United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home onHaden Grove Church Road.

 

William E. McClamrock

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Wednesday for William Edward McClamrock, 76, Avon Street, who died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Davie County Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1924, in Davie County, Mr. McClamrock was a son of the late William Oscar and Eliza Sheek McClamrock. He retired from Ingersoll-Rand Corp. after 25 years. He was also a carpenter.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he earned a Purple Heart. He was known for his cakes and cooking.

Survivors include wife of 44 years Josephine Carter McClamrock; daughter Patricia Draughn, Mocksville; brothers Walter, Oscar and Charlie McClamrock, all of Mocksville; and two grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday,Rose Cemetery, conducted by Dr. David Gilbreath.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Lucille Roberts McGorda

EAST SPENCER — The funeral will be Thursday for Lucille “Lu” Roberts McGorda, 80, 523 Third St., who died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a day of serious illness.

Services: 12 p.m. Thursday,Moore’s Chapel AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. T. Anthony Spearman. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Paul Edward Neely

EAST SPENCER —The funeral will be Wednesday for Paul EdwardNeely, 55, 214 E. Broad St., who died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, after two days of illness.

Born July 2, 1945, in Rowan County, Mr. Neely was a son of Lillie B. Neely Mc-Cluney of EastSpencer, and the late John Neely. He was raised by his late stepfather, the Rev. Victor McCluney, and was a graduate of Dunbar High School.

Last employed at Triad Plastering and DrywallCo., Greensboro, he was a Baptist.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include son Michael Paul Vaughters, Georgia; brothers Curly Ray, Curtis, Larry and Timothy McCluney, all of East Spencer, and the Rev. Willie McCluney, Charlotte; and sister Phronice Johnson, East Spencer.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston, pastor. Burial, Byers Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. At other times the family will be at the home on East Broad Street.

Evelyn Morton Watts

ALBEMARLE — EvelynQuinn Tina Morton Watts, 83, 608 Cannon Ave., died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 7, 1917, in Stanly County, Mrs. Watts was a daughter of the late Goodwin Cefus “Good” and Bertha Isabelle Burris Morton. A homemaker, she was a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church.

Her husband, Floyd Lee Watts, a son, Benny Graydon Watts, and a grandson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Judy Watts Culp, Badin; four other grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Dr. Grady Taylor and the Rev. Pat Jenkins. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

 

Ruby Lee Wiggins

KANNAPOLIS — Ruby Lee Wiggins, 81, Big Elm Retirement Center, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at the center.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Dorothy Moore Withrow

Dorothy Moore Withrow, 82, Salisbury, died Monday (Sept. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born March 15, 1918, in Bostic, Mrs. Withrow was a daughter of the late Lloyd L. and Lola Benson Moore. She was a graduate of Cool Springs High School, Forest City, and attended Boiling Springs College, Boiling Springs.

A homemaker, she was a member of Wilkesboro Baptist Church, Wilkesboro.

Her husband, John Durham Withrow, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Robert Earl Withrow, Statesville, and John Durham Withrow Jr., Austin, Texas; daughters Shirley W. Asa, Salisbury, and Patricia W. Gima, Milwaukee, Wis.; sister Sibyl Moore Dellinger, Charlotte; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

Thomas Daniel Woody

STATESVILLE — Thomas Daniel “Dan” Woody, 66, Kelly Street, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

He retired in 1979 after teaching in the Mooresville City Schools for 30 years.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Broad Street United Methodist Church.

Visitation: In the Memorial Hall of the church immediately after the service. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Susie Miller, 361 Holland Drive.
