Ruby Starnes Barringer

Ruby Starnes Barringer, 80, of Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after an extended illness.

Born Dec. 6, 1919, in Rowan County, Mrs. Barringer was a daughter of the late Suzanna Reid and George A. Starnes. She was educated in Rowan County schools. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include husband James Paul Barringer; sons James Paul Barringer Jr. and David Leon Barringer, both of Salisbury; daughter Jean B. Jones, Salisbury; brothers C.P. and Leo Starnes, both of Salisbury, Lloyd Starnes, Hampton, Va., and Billy Starnes, Newport News, Va.; sisters Katie S. Thompson, Bernice S. Morgan, Ruth S. Adkinson and Viola S. Austin, all of Salisbury; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services:4 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat, minister of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times, the family will at the home of daughter Jean B. Jones, 7460 Bringle Ferry Road, Salisbury.

James Homer Bingham

ASHEBORO — James Homer Bingham, 88, 1923 Goldhill Road, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000)at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation.

Mr. Bingham is survived by a brother Bill Bingham, Spencer.

Services:Graveside, 4 p.m. Tuesday, Giles Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Robert L. Kidd.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro.

Eula Mae Ridge Chandler

NEW LONDON —Eula Mae Ridge Chandler, 87, 41840-B Gurley Road, died Saturday(Sept. 16, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 16, 1913, in Randolph County, Mrs. Chandler was a daughter of the late Homer Roscoe and Allie Floyd Ridge. She was a housewife and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Chandler was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Lee Chandler.

Survivors include sons Howard “Bill,” Lonnie Ray and Wayne Chandler, all of New London; daughters Alene C. Burleson, New London, and Susan C. Blalock, Albemarle; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Tuesday, Bethel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Boyd Joyce, the Rev. Lee Church and the Rev. Carroll Flack. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Alene C. Burleson, 41878 Gurley Road, New London.

 

Beulah Mae Cooper

KANNAPOLIS — Beulah Mae Crouch Cooper, 72, 506 E. 10th St., died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a brief illness.

Born March 20, 1928, in Chester County, S.C., Mrs. Cooper was a daughter of the late Nina Tom Cameron and Harvey B. Crouch. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her husband, Henry W. Cooper, who died May 28, 1990.

Survivors include daughters Judy Purvis, of the home, Betty Helms York, Kannapolis, and Lori Price, Elizabethtown,Ky.; brothers Tillman, Johnny, Boyd and Norman Crouch, all of South Carolina; sisters Euleese Crouch, Nina Taylor and Barbara Funderburk, all of North Carolina, and Loreen Austin, South Carolina; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Gary R. Price and the Rev. Terry Brown. Graveside, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Wingate City Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

 

Evelyn Hager Deaton

MOORESVILLE —Evelyn Hager Deaton, 75, of Shearers Road, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) a her residence.

Born Jan. 25, 1925, in Iredell County, Mrs. Deaton was a daughter of the late Ross Marion and Viola Paxton Hager. Mrs. Deaton was a retired weaver for 45 years with Burlington Industries and was also a member of Shearer Presbyterian Church, Moores-ville.

Survivors include husband Quentin C. Deaton, whom she married April 12, 1941; sister Virginia H. Hart, Mooresville; and brother Jimmy Lee Hager, Mooresville.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Shearer Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Lonnie Barnes, officiating. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresvile.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Pernecy Brown ‘Bea’ Gray

Pernecy Ophelia Brown “Bea”Gray, 85, 1819 Bankett Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Aug. 3, 1915, in George-town, Miss., Mrs. Gray was a daughter of the late Mary Campbell and Sam Brown. Educated in the Mississippi Schools, she was employed as a restaurant manager and managed restaurants in Greensboro and Hendersonville, Winchester, Va., and Las Vegas, Nev. She later operated a beauty shop in Georgia. Mrs. Gray was a member of Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church and the Senior Ladies Sunday school class.

Survivors include husband Paul T. Gray, whom she married Aug. 3, 1962; daughter Sally Martin, Westport, Ore.; stepson Steve Gray, Salisbury; brother Lamar Brown, Warner Robins, Ga.; sisters Erna Edwards, Americus, Ga., Sammie Riggs, Charleston, S.C., and Melba Jones, Lakeland, Fla.; and one granddaughter.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, Dunn’s Mountain Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Donald Godfrey, minister. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum. The body will be taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be a the residence.

Whitney “Whit” Kluttz

Whitney “Whit” William Kluttz, 91, of Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Rowan RegionalMedical Center.

Lucille ‘Lu’ McGorda

EAST SPENCER — Lucille “Lu”Roberts McGorda, 80, 523 Third St., died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after one day of serious illness.

Born March 4, 1920, in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the late Lessie Thomas and Henry Roberts. A graduate of J.C.Price High School, she was retired from the V.A. Medical Center, Salisbury. She was a member of Moores Chapel AME Zion Church, and a member of the Parent Body Missionary, Lay Council.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Purvis McGorda, who died in 1953.

Survivors include son Michael W. McGorda, Colonial Beach, Va.; daughters Edna McCullough, East Spencer, and Mae McGorda, Salisbury; sister Edna R. Archie, Washington, D.C.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Clifford Edward Overcash

Clifford Edward Overcash, 51, of Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000)at his residence.

Born May 1, 1949, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Overcash was a son of the late Willie Irene Andrew Overcash Presnell and the late Henry Edward Overcash. He was educated in Rowan County schools. Mr. Overcash was retired from Cone Mills and was a Lutheran.

Mr. Overcash was preceded in death by a son, John Edward Overcash.

Survivors include wife Verona Shoaf Overcash, of the home, whom he married Nov. 30, 1969; brothers Jerry William and Jeffery Alan Overcash, both of China Grove; sisters Judy Stubbs and Chris Harmon, both of China Grove.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford, pastor of Salem Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-:8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a father-in-law Clay Shoaf, Salisbury.

Laura McCluney Stinson

Laura McCluney Stinson, 47, 105 E. Broad St., died Sunday (Sept. 17, 2000) at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Mary Hunsucker Warner

RICHFIELD —Mary Elizabeth Hunsucker Warner, 84, 112 Church St., died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000)at Avante’ at Concord.

Born April 7, 1916, in Concord, she was a daughter of the late Cora Alice Gray and Andrew Jackson Hunsucker. She was a spinner for Cannon Mills and was a member of Richfield Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband William Dawson “W.D.” Warner, of the home; one granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, Richfield Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. C. Eugene Carroll and the Rev. Ken Simpson. Burial, Richfield Cemetery.

Visitation:7-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Dorothy Moore Withrow

Dorothy Moore Withrow, 82, of Salisbury, died today (Sept. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
