Myrtle Horton Arthurs

STATESVILLE — Myrtle Horton Arthurs, 100, formerly of Plaza Apartments, Salisbury, and 120 S. Meeting St., died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at Brian Center of Statesville, where she had been a resident for the past 12 years.

Born Now. 30, 1899, in Rowan County, Mrs. Arthurs was a daughter of the late Jackson P. and Simpon Georgeanna Horton. She was a retired as a saleswoman working with the Stewart Store of Baltimore and Belk Store of Charlotte for a number of years. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, where she had been active in the May Sally Bible Class and United Methodist Women.

Her husband, Elliott Clyde Arthurs, died in 1947, and a son, Elliott Clyde Arthurs Jr., died in 1997.

Survivors include three grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Services were Saturday at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. Burial was at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Dorothy Ford “Dot” Atkins

SAN ANTONIO, Texas —Dorothy Ford “Dot” Atkins, 64, 5231 Cabin Lake Drive, formerly of 630 W. Monroe St., Salisbury, N.C., died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several years of declining health.

Born Feb. 17, 1936, in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the late Mary Alice Mooney and William Ford. A graduate of J.C. Price High School, Salisbury, she was a housewife. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Salisbury, the usher board, senior choir and the Dandy Dames Club.

her husband, Leonard Atkins, died in 1968.

Survivors include son Leonard Atkins Jr., Salisbury; daughter Esther L. Atkins-McKay, Silver Springs, Md.; brother Thomas N. Ford, Charlotte, N.C.; sister Nancy Sims, Spencer, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of sister Nancy Sims, 312 Fifth St., Spencer.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Floy Carter Brown

LEXINGTON — Floy Winfred Carter Brown, 83, Lexington, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Born Dec. 19, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Sally Stanley day and Lehman F. Carter. She was a member of Pilgrim Reformed United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Robert Brown.

Survivors include daughter Margaret Rayfield Story, Lexington; son William Franklin Parker, Lexington; sisters Estelle Bell and Ruth Holder, both of Lexington; brother Paul H. Carter; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Piedmont Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rosser Clapp. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Margaret Story, 324 Shamrock Drive.

Farley Burleson

KANNAPOLIS —Farley Jer-ome Burleson Jr., 73, 1513 Oakshade Ave., died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at his residence after years of declining health and four months of serious illness.

Born May 2, 1927, in Stanly County, Mr. Burleson was a son of the late Mary and Farley Jerome Burleson. He retired as plant manager from Cannon Mills plant No. 4, and was treasurer of Burleson Wholesale Florist Inc. He was a member of Oaks Baptist Church, a Sunday school teacher and superintendent and deacon. He served in U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge, Cabarrus Shrine Club, Oasis Temple, Charlotte, and the supreme council.

Survivors include wife Margaret Troutman Burleson; daughter Judy B. Hamby, Stoneville; son James F. Burleson, Mount Pleasant; sister Connie Wall, Winston-Salem; brother Bill Burleson, Concord; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, Royal Oaks Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leon Smith. Burial, Carolina MemorialPark.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Minnie Lee Beck Carter

LEXINGTON —Minnie Lee Beck Carter, 89, 285 Elm Drive, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Golden Age Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 19, 1910, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Snider and Thomas Lindsay Beck. She was retired from Belk department store, where she had worked for 13 years, and was a member of Reeds Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Marcellus Carter.

Survivors include daughter Geraldine Leonard, Lexington; son June Conrad Carter, Mount Pleasant, S.C.; sisters Tessie Michael, Reeds, and Willie May Grubb, Lexington; brothers Claude and Charlie Beck, both of Lexington, and Frank Beck, Florence, S.C.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Piedmont Funeral Home chapel. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Geraldine Leonard, 197 Elm Drive.

 

Pernecy Brown Gray

Pernecy Ophelia Brown Gray, 85, 1819 Bankett Ave., died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Sarah Shuffler Lemmonds

CHINA GROVE —Sarah Shuffler Lemmonds, 80, 1065 Circle Drive, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation after two years of declining health.

Born Oct. 10, 1919, in Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Matie L. Heilig and Edgar W. Shuffler. Educated in Rowan County schools, she was employed by China Grove Textiles for 30 years. She was a member of Pine Ridge Baptist Church.

Her husband, Hoyle B. Lemmonds, died May 21, 1989.

Survivors include brothers Johnnie Shuffler, Rockwell, and Bill Shuffler, China Grove; sisters Hazel E. Ballard, China Grove, and Erma A. Chastain, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, West Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Nelson Wright.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Clifford Edward Overcash, 51, Salisbury, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000) at his residence.

Timothy Paul ‘Tim’ Spry

LEXINGTON —Timothy Paul Spry, 35, 4130 W. Center St. Ext., died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born July 19, 1965, in Davidson County, Mr. Spry was a son of Paul B. Spry, of the home, and Nancy Elizabeth Koontz Spry Wiser, Foley, Ala. He was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include stepmother Sandra A. Spry, of the home; stepfather Robert Wiser, Foley, Ala.; and sister Linda Edwards, Graham.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Piedmont Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Larry Peterson. Burial, Beulah United Church of Christ Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Earl LeRoy Stoudt

ROCKWELL — Earl LeRoy Stoudt, 80, Rockwell, died Friday (Sept. 15, 2000) at his home.

Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Chester County, Pa., Mr. Stoudt was a son of the late Lillian Shilling and Oliver Stoudt. Educated in Pennsylvania schools, Mr. Stoudt was a retired commercial carpenter with local union 211 in Pittsburgh, Pa. He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church, local 211 Carpenters Union in Pittsburgh, Pa., and the American Legion.He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Stoudt is survived by his wife Margaret P. “Marge” Stoudt, whom he married Nov. 23, 1957.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, St. James Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Craig Sigmon, pastor. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 5-7 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

Helen Hutchens Surratt

TUCSON, Ariz. — Helen May Hutchens Surratt, 75, Tucson, died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) after a long illness.

Born Oct. 2, 1924, in Salisbury, N.C., she was raised in Rowan County, and lived in Spencer, N.C., and Salisbury until 1956.

Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Lloyd S. Surratt; sons Monte L. and Joel S. Surratt, both of Tucson; daughter Mandy M. Surratt, Coeur D’Alene, Idaho; brothers Harold Hilton and Tom Hutchens, both of North Carolina; sisters Betty Moore, North Carolina, and Dolores Leonard, South Carolina; and four grandchildren.

Services:Memorial, 3 today, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Tucson, conducted by the Rev. Don Brummet.

 

 

James A. Walker

GRANITE QUARRY — James A. Walker, 67, 703 Highway 52, died Saturday (Sept. 16, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Margaret Lomax Zabicki

The funeral will be Monday for Margaret Lomax Zabicki, 42, Gold Hill, who died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000).

Born Aug. 21, 1958, in Queens, N.Y., Mrs. Zabicki was a daughter of Isabelle Fraser and Boyce Lomax, Gold Hill. Educated in the New York schools, Mrs. Zabicki was a homemaker.

Survivors include husband Larry Zabicki, whom she married May 20, 1978; son Mark Zabicki, of the home; daughters Sara Zabicki, of the home; brothers John Lomax, Wantaugh, N.Y., and Robert Lomax, Gold Hill; and sister Mary Ann Lyerly, Gold HIll.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Powles FuneralHome Chapel, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Penny Godfrey, chaplain, Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
