TYRO— It was good to get back to 1A football for West Davidson.
After being ripped by 3A neighbors North Davidson and Central Davidson in the past two weeks by a combined 75-12, Barry Mitchum’s Green Dragons were mad going into their home game Friday night. They knew they were a better team than the 35-6 and 40-6 losses.
And the poor recipient of their wrath was outmanned North Moore, which was pounded 34-0.
The win improved West’s record to 3-2.
How bad was it for the Mustangs? They brought 16 players and left with 12.
Taking advantage of their speedy athletes, West ripped off 302 yards rushing and produced two 100-yard gainers.
Drew Snider led the way with 199 yards on 18 carries while fullback Westley Harman added 115 on 21 tries.
Snider thrilled the crowd with an amazing 64-yard run that made it 21-0 in the first half. He took a toss sweep, put on a wondrous spin move and cut back across the field. He got a good block from quarterback Dustin Hobbs around the 10 and cruised in.
It was Snider’s second score. He had earlier run in from eight yards.
Harman had started the scoring with a two-yard run, followed by Allan Rohrbaugh’s extra point.
Harman scored the team’s last touchdown on a nine-yard run to finish off his big night.
Speaking of big nights, Rohrbaugh, who Mitchum touts as the best 1A kicker in the state, proved his coach to be a genius. He not only booted four extra points but added field goals of 33 and 45 yards.
Rohrbaugh’s 10 points gave him the school record for kick scoring, breaking the mark of Jason Hartley, who finished his career with 61. Rohrbaugh has done it in just a year and a half.
His other record came on his 44-yarder. He broke the mark of 39 yards by Dale Snider back in 1975.
Hartley is the brother of Jeff Hartley, currently a Catawba College player. Snider is the father of Drew.
It got so bad for North Moore that it went for it on several fourth-down plays, despite being deep in their own territory. West’s stout defense held and the Green Dragons had several easy opportunities to score.
In fact, in the second half, the teams agreed to run a continuous clock.
Defensively, North Moore could get nothing going. The Mustangs were just 1-of-17 through the air.
West doesn’t pass much but Hobbs completed 2-of-4 for 26 yards.
Another challenge awaits West next week. It faces Graham and the two teams have a unique relationship.
Last year, the Green Dragons defeated Graham early in the season. Graham then defeated West in the 1A playoffs.
That game will be played in Tyro and you can bet — the Green Dragons will still be mad.
