Paralee Hord Fisher
GRANITE QUARRY — Paralee Florence Hord Fisher, 76, Granite Quarry, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury.
Born Dec. 12, 1923, in Charlotte, Mrs. Fisher was a daughter of the late Bynum and Ethel Wilkins Hord. She was educated at Thomasboro High School, Charlotte. A homemaker, she was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, Salisbury.
Her husband, Jesse Morrison Fisher, died in 1980.
Survivors include brother Bertrand Hord, Lincolncon.

Ralph Leonard Fortner
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Ralph Leonard Fortner, 76, 707 E. 22nd St., who died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at Brian Center, Moores-ville, after many years of declining health.
Born Feb. 26, 1924, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Fortner was the son of the late Carl David Fortner and Irene Crisco Fortner Stevens. He had been employed by Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 7 spinning room for many years. Later, he was employed by the former Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Firestone Tire Co., both in Kannapolis. He retired in 1981 due to his health. He worked part time in lawn mower repair for many years.
Survivors include wife Sophia Smith Fortner; son Guy Leonard Fortner, Kannapolis; brothers Charles and Howard Fortner, both of Lexington; sisters Edna Childers, Kannapolis, and Laura Hatley, Stanfield; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Joisy Huneycutt Howard
NORWOOD — Joisy Huneycutt Howard, 75, 32004 Bethlehem Church Road, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.
She retired as a winder from Wiscassett Mills, Albemarle.

Robert ‘Sid’ Snider
WOODLEAF — Robert Herman “Sid” Snider, 49, 175 Snookie Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born June 4, 1951, in Davidson County, Mr. Snider was a son of the late Sidney Lanier and Mary Belle Merritt Snider. He was a cook at Hendrix Barbecue Salisbury, and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include sister Mary Jane Yates, Lexington; and brother Sidney S. Snider Jr., Lexington.

Ella Harrelson Spencer
Ella Harrelson Spencer, 72, 250 Mike Drive, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.
Born Oct. 10, 1927, in Richmond County, Mrs. Spencer was the daughter of the late Jesse and Melissa Knight Harrelson. She retired in 1990 from Pacer Manufacturing, Concord, and later worked for Piedmont Cleaners, Kannapolis.
Her husband, Carley Spencer, died in 1971.
Survivors include daughter Melissa Heustess, Salisbury; son Blain Whittington, Salisbury; brother Tommy Harrelson, Rockingham; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Travis Elwood Tysinger
LEXINGTON — Travis Elwood Tysinger, 73, 887 Fritts Road, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation.
Born Sept. 3, 1927, in Davidson County, Mr. Tysinger was a son of the late Elwood Travis and Mildred Bernice Parker Tysinger. He had been employed by Coble Dairy for 33 years and with Davidson County for nine years.
Mr. Tysinger was a member of Meadowview Presbyterian church and the Adult Bible class. He was also a member of Clemmer-Byrd T.L.C. of the church and a former elder. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member Reeds American Legion Post.
Survivors include wife Gladys Carter Tysinger; daughter Glenda Tysinger, Chevy Chase, Md.; sons Randy T. Tysinger, High Point, and Rocky K. Tysinger, York, S.C.; sisters Eloise Hillard, Bertha Louya and Thelma Walser, all of Lexington, and Alta Mae Frizell, Sylva; brothers Robert Tysinger, Union Grove, Johnny and James Tysinger, both of Lexington, and Luther Tysinger, Midway; and two grandsons.

Ovie P. Walters
CHINA GROVE — Ovie Price Walters, 90, formerly of Daughtery Road, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at the Laurels of Salisbury after seven years of declining health and six days of serious illness.
Born June 8, 1910, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Walters was a daughter of the late Bud and Nellie Price.
Her husband, James Bundy Walters, died in 1993.
Survivors include daughters Coleen W. and Willie M. Sechler, both of China Grove; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Maggie T. Washington
BADIN — Maggie B. Tanner Washington, 85, 306 Lincoln St., died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at Mercer Medical Center, Trenton, N.J.
Born June 2, 1915, in Sylvester, Ga., Mrs. Washington was a daughter of the late Ross Tanner and Reller Cato. She was educated in the Worth County, Ga., schools.
A member of Saint Luke Holiness church, she was Mother of the Church, a member of the Missionary Circle and the kitchen committee, and involved in Sunday school.
Survivors include husband Walter Lee Washington; sons Walter L. Washington Jr., Mount Holly, N.J., William H. Washington, Burlington Township, N.J., Bishop Franklin D. Washington, Delran, N.J., and Kevin Washington, of the home; daughters Thelma Pintella, Trenton, N.J., W. Pearl Washington, Topeka, Kan., and G. Marie McKenzie, Granite Quarry; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Roger Lee Whittaker
MOCKSVILLE —The funeral will be Saturday for Roger Lee Whittaker, 67, Duke Whittaker Road, who died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at his home.
Born July 7, 1933, in Davie County, Mr. Whittaker was a son of Jessie Whittaker Howell, Mocksville, and the late Duke L. Whittaker.
He retired from Sara Lee Corp., Winston-Salem, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. A charter member of Blaise Baptist Church, he was on the board of deacons and a former church treasurer.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Peggy Beck Whittaker; son Mitchell Whittaker, Paducah, Ky.; daughters Regina W. Takacs, Berwick, Pa., and Jennifer W. Delouise, Lewisville; brothers Jimmy and Gene Whittaker, both of Mocksville; sister Betty W. Angell, Mocksville; and four grandchildren.

Vernon F. Wilkerson Jr.
Vernon Francis Wilkerson Jr., 72, 717 W. Henderson St., died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at his home after a brief illness.
Born June 3, 1928, in Danville, Va., Mr. Wilkerson was a son of the late Vernon F. and Katheryne Scruggs Wilkerson. He was educated in the public schools of Danville and received his bachelor of science in mechanical engineering fromVirginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, Va., in 1950.
Employed by North Carolina Finishing Co. since 1957, he retired as director of engineering and services in 1989. During the 1990s he participated as a volunteer executive in the International Executive Service Corps.
A member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, he served in various positions including junior and senior warden, chair of the building committee and most recently as chair of the columbarium committee. He was past vice president of the Salisbury-Rowan YMCA, a member of Fulton Masonic Lodge and Spencer Moose Lodge, Spencer.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Cook Wilkerson; sons Vernon Frederick Wilkerson, Herndon, Va., John F. Wilkerson, Seattle, Wash., and Dennis C. Wilkerson, Durham; daughters Katheryne Wilkerson Helms, Concord, and Ann Wilkerson Dandison, Salisbury; and nine grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern. The body will be cremated and the remains buried at the church’s columbariam.

James Newton Wilson
The funeral is today for James Newton Wilson, 87, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born June 6, 1913, in Cherokee County, S.C., Mr. Wilson, a son of the late Edward Newton and Nancy White Wilson, was educated in the Cherokee County, S.C., schools.
He moved to Salisbury in 1957 when he was working for Plantation Pipeline Co. He retired in Atlanta, Ga., and returned to Salisbury in 1975.
A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, he was active in all phases of the church. He was also a member of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576 and a volunteer with the Red Cross bloodmobile for many years.
A son, Bill Newton Wilson, preceded him in death.
Survivors include wife Pauline Isler Wilson, whom he married Dec. 24, 1934; sons Dr. Robert Wilson, Salisbury, and James Herbert Wilson, Cramer Mountain; daughters Sarah Jo Ann Thomas, Salisbury, and Mary Ellen Weddington, Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 today, Milford Hills United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Neill Shaw. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30. Burial, Rowan Memorial park.
Visitation: 12:30-2 today at the church fellowship hall. At other times the family will be at the home.
