Alma Huggins Armour

Services for Alma Huggins Armour, 85, 1220 Forestdale Drive, who died Aug. 24, 2000, in Salisbury, will be held Saturday.

Mrs. Armour was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury for 40 years and had been employed by the Farmers Home Administration in Statesville and Salisbury.

Survivors include husband Ervin S. Armour; son Lee Armour, Charlotte; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside committal, 11 a.m. Saturday, Oakwood Cemetery, Statesville, conducted by the Rev. Tony McDade.

Nicholson Funeral Home, Statesville, is in charge.

Dorothy W. Belcher

PARKSVILLE, Ky. — Dorothy Westerfield Belcher, 68, Church Street, mother of David Belcher, Landis, N.C., died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at her home.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Preston-Pruitt Funeral Home, Danville. Burial, Parksville Cemetery.

Visitation: 5-9 tonight.

 

Hubert Carter

The funeral will be Friday for Hubert Carter, 71, 435 Wiley Lane, who died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Feb. 15, 1929, in Rowan County, Mr. Carter was a son of the late Robert and Ida Mae Williams Carter. He was educated in Rowan County schools.

Mr. Carter had been employed with Nehi Bottling Co. for 29 years. He retired in 1985 from Parkdale Mills after 15 years.

Survivors include companion Barbara McDaniel; son Michael McDaniel, Gold Hill; daughter Diane Motley, Salisbury; brother Joseph Carter, Salisbury; sisters Lola Eddleman, Mary Byrd, Thelma Philips and Rosy Cauble, all of Salisbury; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 12 p.m. Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Jim Harris.

Visitation: 11-11:45 a.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home.

Cannie Brewer Dennis

ALBEMARLE —Cannie Belle Brewer Dennis, 81, 111 Hamilton Ave., died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at her home.

Born March 17, 1919, in Montgomery County, Mrs. Dennis was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Lilly Hussey Brewer. She was a homemaker and member of Dunn’s Grove Baptist Church.

Her husband,Otto Dennis, and a son, Otto Dennis Jr., preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Myrtle Richardson and Nancy and Betty Dennis, all of Albemarle, and Ethel Lanier, Badin; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Stanly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Mowery. Burial, Poplin’s Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Steve Fesperman

CONCORD — The funeral will be Friday for Phillip Steve Fesperman, 61, 388 Cameron Ave. N.E., who died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center after a year of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born Sept. 9, 1939, in Stanly County, Mr. Fesperman was a son of Gladys Ingold Fesperman, Albemarle, and the late Charlie Frank Fesperman. He was a self-employed caterer.

A Mason and member of Oasis Shrine,Charlotte, he was past president of Albemarle Jaycees. He was also a member of the board of directors of the Boy’s Home at Lake Waccamaw and the Duke Endowment Board.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Cathy McCombs Fesperman; daughters Kathy Connell and Stephanie Coley, both of Albemarle; son Phillip Steve Fesperman Jr., Albemarle; stepsons Bobby Sawyer, Mount Pleasant, Alex Sawyer, Kannapolis, Mac Sawyer, Charlotte, and Tim Sawyer, Wilmington; and 11 grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke Ritchie. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis. At other times the family will be at the home on Cameron Avenue.

 

 

Paralee Hord Fisher

GRANITE QUARRY — Paralee Florence Hord Fisher, 76, Granite Quarry, died Thursday (Sept. 14, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home,Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Alma Lucylle Green Furr

ALBEMARLE — Alma Lucylle Green Furr, 78, 715 Monticello Drive, died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at her home.

Born June 24, 1922, in Badin, Mrs. Furr was a daughter of the late James “J.P.” and Swannona Plyler Green. She was educated in the Albemarle City schools and had retired as a switchboard operator from the Albemarle City Schools. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include son Edward G. Furr, Albemarle; and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held this morning at 11 a.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. David Rorie officiated. Burial, Fairview Cemetery.

The family will be at the home on Monticello Drive.

 

Walter Rayford Harrison

The funeral will be Friday for Walter Rayford Harrison, 73, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at his home from an apparent heart attack.

Born Feb. 23, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Harrison was a son of the late John Francis and Mamie Regan Harrison. He was educated in Rowan County schools and served with the U.S. Army in Japan.

He had worked for Southern Railway and retired in 1989 as a boilermaker construction worker through Boilermakers Local 30 in Greensboro. A member of Grace United Methodist Church, he was a former member of Long Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Glenna Wooddell Harrison, whom he married Sept. 10, 1955; son David W. Harrison, Salisbury; daughters Kim H. Blackwelder, Rock Hill, S.C., and Susan R. Harrison, Salisbury; brothers John W. Harrison, Bakersfield, Calif., and Fairfax Harrison, Charlotte; sisters Frances H. Davis, Salisbury, and Lucille H. Bowers, Springfield, Calif.; and three grandsons.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev.Randy Powell, pastor, Grace United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

C. Earl Register

KANNAPOLIS — Charles Earl Register, 66, 908 East 13th St., died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after four months of declining health and four weeks of serious illness.

Born Aug. 25, 1934, in Columbus County, Mr. Register was a son of the late Raleigh Pearson and Lizzie Juanita Puckett Register. He retired from Savannah River Plant, Jackson, S.C., where he was a welder and pipe fitter.

An area resident for 30 years, he was a member of Homeland Baptist Church, China Grove, and a former member of Truth Temple. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors include wife Frances Marjorie Farmer Register; daughters Debbie Lynn Ross, Durham, and Tracey Austin, Watkinsville, Ga.; sons Carl Joseph “Joey” Finney, China Grove, Franklin Dean Finney, Churchland, and Randy Lynn Finney, Charlotte; sisters Wilhelmina Collins, Kannapolis, and Vera Goodman, China Grove; brothers Edwin Register, China Grove, and Jimmy Register, Greenville, S.C.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Garland Faw, the Rev. Sam Hopkins and the Rev. Larry Edwards.Entombment, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on East 13th Street.

Margaret Privett Whaley

The funeral will be Friday for Margaret Privett Whaley, 80, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at her home after two years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Dec. 11, 1919, in Douglas County, Mo., Mrs. Whaley was a daughter of the late John Alfred and Lundy Lucinda Bragg Privett. Educated in the Douglas County, Mo., schools, she was a graduate of Ava High School.

She was a homemaker. During World War II, she worked in an airplane factory. Later she worked at DiMaggio’s Restaurant and Woodleaf Lanes and kept children in her home. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and WELCA.

Her husband, Walter Wooten Whaley, died Jan. 6, 1992.

Survivors include sons Donnie Mefford, Monroe, Walt Whaley Jr. and John and James Whaley, all of Rockwell, Charlie Whaley, Mocksville, Mark Whaley, Spencer, Scott Whaley, Stanfield, and Paul Whaley, Salisbury; daughters Mickey Rogers,China Grove, and Trudy Rowland, Judy Heilig and Betty Wilson, all of Salisbury; sister Sally Jo Daniels, Salisbury; 29 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services: 10 a.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Marcus B. Hovis III. Burial, National Cemetery, Government Road, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Roger Lee Whittaker

MOCKSVILLE — Roger Lee Whittaker, 67, Duke Whittaker Road, the husband of Betty Beck Whittaker, died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at his home.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Vernon Francis Wilkerson

Vernon Francis Wilkerson, 72, 717 W. Henderson St., died Wednesday (Sept. 13, 2000) at his home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

James Newton Wilson

The funeral will be Friday for James Newton Wilson, 87, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Sept. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

Born June 6, 1913, in Cherokee County, S.C., Mr. Wilson, a son of the late Edward Newton and Nancy White Wilson, was educated in the Cherokee County, S.C., schools.

He moved to Salisbury in 1957 when he was working for Plantation Pipeline Co. He retired in Atlanta, Ga., and returned to Salisbury in 1975.

A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, he was active in all phases of the church. He was also a member of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576 and a volunteer with the Red Cross Bloodmobile for many years.

Survivors include wife Pauline Isler Wilson, whom he married Dec. 24, 1934; sons Dr. Robert Wilson, Salisbury, and James Herbert Wilson, Cramer Mountain; daughters Sarah Jo Ann Thomas, Salisbury, and Mary Ellen Weddington, Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Milford Hills United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Neil Shaw. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30. Burial, Rowan Memorial park.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Friday at the church fellowship hall. At other times the family will be at the home.
