Kay Edward Beaver
Kay Edward Beaver, 62, 227 Ludwick Ave., died
Monday (Sept. 11, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 12, 1937, in Rowan County, Mr. Beaver
was a son of the late Bruner Edward and Nellie Odell Williams Beaver. A 1957
graduate of Landis High School, he had worked as a technician with Piedmont
Natural Gas Co. for 33 years.
A member of Friendship Baptist Church, he had
served as trustee, chairman of the finance, personnel and nominating committees
and co-chair of the pulpit committee.
Survivors include wife Janice Pence Beaver, whom
he married Aug. 21, 1976; son Gary Wayne Beaver, Sumter, S.C.; brother Jerry
Hoyt Beaver, China Grove; and sister Joyce Gail Fisher, Landis.
Services: Service of praise, 4 p.m. Wednesday,
Friendship Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Roger Head. The body has been
cremated.

Carl Arthur Overcash
The funeral will be Wednesday for Carl Arthur
“Uncle Snuffy” Overcash, 71, 6040-21 S. Main St., who died Sunday (Sept. 10,
2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 3, 1928, in Rowan County, Mr. Overcash
was a son of the late Arthur Abraham and Euphie Overcash Overcash. He was
educated in the Rowan County schools.
A retired textile worker, he was a member of
Emmanuel Wesleyan Church, Lexington, and a life member of the Yadkin Valley
Folklore Society. Mr. Overcash served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include wife Johnsie Morgan Overcash,
of the Brian Center; sons Allen and John Arthur Overcash, both of Kannapolis;
daughters Carol Overcash Dunlap and Suzi Overcash Kimball, both of Kannapolis,
and Jean Overcash Smith, Lexington; brothers Herbert and Earl Overcash, both of
China Grove, Fred Overcash, Rockwell, and Homer Overcash, Salisbury; sister
Roseanna Deal, China Grove; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

LANDIS — Barrett Pitchford Craig, 66, 604 E.
Ridge Ave., died Monday (Sept. 11, 2000) at his home after a period of declining
health.
Born Jan. 20, 1934, in Jefferson, Ga., Mr. Criag
was a son of the late Charlie Pitchford and Myra Magdalene Barnett Craig. He had
retired in 1997 after 40 years with Charlotte Pipe and Foundry, Charlotte. He
was a member of South China Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife Ruby Lipe Craig; daughters
Terri Thompson, China Grove, and Rhonda Craig, Kannapolis; brothers Biddy Craig,
Kannapolis, and Gene Craig, Faith; sisters Ollie Doster, Landis, Bernice Link,

Carl Leonard Deal
WOODLEAF — The funeral will be Wednesday for
Carl Leonard Deal, 101, 1270 Parks Road, who died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at his
home.
Born Nov. 16, 1898, in Rowan County, Mr. Deal was
a son of the late Charlie Alexander and Maggie Sophia Hileman Deal. A farmer, he
also taught at Mill Bridge School in his early years and served on the school
board in Woodleaf. He also served as judge/clerk for local polls during
elections.
A member of Unity Presbyterian Church since 1915,
he was a Sunday school teacher for 60 years, until the age of 99, and a trustee
for 48 years. He was ordained as a deacon in 1919. In 1934, he was ordained as
an elder and served in that capacity for 50 years. He was honored for his church
service and stewardship in 1995.
His wife, Pearl Carter Deal, died Nov. 15, 1983,
and a son, Carl L. Deal Jr., died July 12, 1996.
Survivors include sons Robert B. Deal, Woodleaf,
and Charles N. Deal, Hobart, Ind.; daughter Virginia D. Moore, Woodleaf;
brothers Charlie Thomas and James C. Deal, both of Salisbury, and Levi C. Deal,
Greensboro; sisters Mary D. McDaniel and Nannie D. Wilhelm, both of Salisbury,
and Ethel D. Snider, Woodleaf; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and
four great-great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Unity Presbyterian
Church, conducted by the Rev. James E. Hollis Jr., interim pastor, and the Rev.
Malcolm Bullock. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, church

Frances Blackwell Loflin
The funeral will be Wednesday for Frances
Blackwell Loflin, 70, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at her home
after a period of declining health.
Born Oct. 5, 1929, in Rowan County, Mrs. Loflin
was a daughter of the late Otis Caldwell and Alma Inez Swicegood Blackwell. She
was educated in the Rowan County schools. A homemaker, she had retired from
Delta Thread.
A lifelong member of Main Street United Methodist
Church, she was secretary for the United Methodist Women and for the church
administrative board. She was also a member of the choir and a former Sunday
school teacher.
Her husband, Everette Eugene Loflin, died Feb.
11, 1985.
Survivors include daughters Connie Peninger and
Bonnie Walser, both of Salisbury; and four grandchildren.

Gladys Phillips Overcash
KANNAPOLIS — No service or visitation is
planned for Gladys Phillips Overcash, 76, 7224 Beaver Road, who died Sunday
(Sept. 10, 2000) at her home after a long period of declining health and two
weeks of serious illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1924, in Hart County, Ga., Mrs.
Overcash was a daughter of the late Willis Harrison and Nina Bernice Fowler
Phillips. She had retired in 1978 after 40 years with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No.
7 and No. 2 weave rooms.
Survivors include husband Roy Lynn Overcash;
daughters Shirley Lynette Davidson and Susan Anderson, both of Faith, and Regina
Ball, Rockwell; brother Julius Phillips, Rex, Ga.; sisters Mary Allmon,
Salisbury, Inez Berryman and Wanelle Hall, both of Royston, Ga., and Dora
Dutton, Greenwood, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Cora Walters Pressley
CONCORD — Cora Frances Walters “Tank”
Pressley, 75, 162 Madison Ave., died Monday (Sept. 11, 2000) at the home of a
granddaughter in China Grove.
Born July 8, 1925, Mrs. Pressley was a daughter
of the late George and Estelle Roberts Walters. Retired as a spinner for Cannon
Mills, Plant 10, she was a member of Young Memorial Baptist Church.
Her husband, Henry A. Pressley, died April 4,
1998.
Survivors include daughters Barbara K. Bumgardner,
Mooresville, and Dianne Pressley Adcock, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and
two great-granddaughters.

Burgess Robertson, 87, Deerwood Lane, who died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at Lake

Born Sept. 10, 1913, in Murphy, Mrs. Robertson
was a daughter of the late Jeff and Melissa Crow Burgess. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben
Lee “Buck” Robertson, and a son, Allen Delane Robertson.

Michael Dale Tutterow, 175 Waccamaw Drive, who died Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000).
Born Sept. 27, 1975, in Rowan County, Mr.
Tutterow was a son of Roger Dale Tutterow, Spencer, and Kay Barnes Wallace,
Mount Pleasant. Educated at Mount Pleasant High School, Mount Pleasant, he
attended Landis Baptist Church, Landis. He was employed with Carolina Homeworks,
Kannapolis.

YORKTOWN, Va. —Neal Wesley Wright, 53, 116-D
Pinewood Crescent, died Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000) at Mary Immaculate Hospital,
Newport News.
Born Jan. 13, 1947, in Rowan County, N.C., Mr.
Wright was a son of Dorothy Irene Watts Wright, Lexington, N.C., and the late
Austin W. Wright.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill, he was employed with Southeastern Public Service Authority as a
computer programmer and analyst. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include
wife Joan Lynn Wright; stepdaughter Jennifer Lynn Staton, Garner, N.C.; and a
step-granddaughter.
