COOLEEMEE — Betty Tucker Brown, 68, 147 Davie St., died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 6, 1932, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown, a daughter of the late Robert Cleo and Mary Ann Austin Tucker, was educated in the Rowan County schools.
She retired from Cone Mills, Salisbury, after 19 years. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include husband James “Jack” F. Brown, whom she married May 21, 1949; son Kenneth Moore, Salisbury; daughter Shirley Overcash, Salisbury; brothers Lonnie R. Tucker, Statesville, Jimmy L. Tucker, Cooleemee, and Donald E. Tucker, West Lake, La.; and sisters Frances T. O’Neal, Cooleemee, and Edna T. Kyles, Salisbury.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Legion Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Danny Shore, pastor, Edgewood Baptist Church.

Frederica White Brown
MOORESVILLE — Frederica White Brown, 76, Shearers Road, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at her home.
Born April 17, 1924, in Mecklenburg County, Mrs. Brown, a daughter of the late Fred and Zettie Cashion White, was a former co-owner of Ricki & Myrtle’s Restaurant in downtown Mooresville. She was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Harry C. Brown, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughter Donna B. Carrington, Mooresville; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Dennis E. Carraher
LEXINGTON — Dennis Evan Carraher, 55, Lexington, died Friday (Sept. 8, 2000) at his home.
Born July 19, 1945, in Des Moines, Iowa, Mr. Carraher retired from Veterans Affairs as chief social worker after over 30 years in the field of mental health, addictions treatment and medical social services.
He was a member of Anchorage Lodge 17 AF & AM and was active in the community prior to his illness.
Survivors include wife Barbara Mull Carraher; daughter Deseri C. Mariano, Lakewood, Wash.; sons Dennis Carraher Jr., Telhequah Springs, Okla., David Carraher, Anchorage, Alaska, and Michael Sharp, Chapel Hill; brothers Charles Carraher, Parkland, Fla., and Jack Carraher, Lawrence, Kansas; and 12 grandchildren.

Mildred Jones Casper
GOLD HILL —The funeral will be Tuesday for Mildred Lucille Jones Casper, 71, who died Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after six months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born Sept. 12, 1928, in Forsyth County, Mrs. Casper was a daughter of the late James Thomas and Lula Estelle Shore Jones. She was a graduate of Clemmons High School, Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary.
Retired, she was the executive secretary to the bishop of the North Carolina Lutheran Synod of ELCA. She had served under three bishops and was an associate in ministry of the ELCA. She was recently honored for 30 years of service.
Mrs. Casper was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and Women of ELCA. A Sunday school teacher for youth and children, she was on the church council and church committees, a founder of the pre-school, president of the Season Saints, a member of the choir and led the Men’s and Children’s choir and was church pianist. She served on the N.C. Synod Candidacy committee.
Survivors include husband Eugene “Gene” Casper, whom she married June 16, 1948; daughters Janice Raper, Salisbury, and Julie Maynard, Cobourg, Ontario, Canada; sister Margie Jones Allen, Winston-Salem; and five grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug and Lori Hefner, co-pastors, and Dr. Leonard Bolick, bishop of the North Carolina ELCA. Burial in family plot in the church cemetery.

Robert Stokes Cole
NEW LONDON — Robert Stokes Cole, 67, 35320 Gene Road, died Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Dec. 12, 1932, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Mr. Cole was a son of the late Furman Duncan and Rebecca Ann Miller Cole. He owned and operated Cole Trucking and Excavating Inc.
He served on U.S. Navy submarines, ENG 3 PO during the Korean War. A member of New London United Methodist Church, he was a member of Seminole Masonic Lodge 304 for 40 years. An avid golfer, he was a member of High Meadows Golf and County Club, Roaring Gap, and a member of the U.S. Golf Association and attended Senior Tour Golf Tournaments.
Survivors include wife Diana Swift Cole; son Robert Swift Cole, New London; daughter Carolyn Virginia Matlack, New London; brother Carlton F. Cole, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

WOODLEAF — Carl Leonard Deal, 101, 1270 Parks Road, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at his home.

Bertha Spry Harris
The funeral will be Tuesday for Bertha Spry Harris, 74, Salisbury, who died Saturday (Sept. 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born June 3, 1926, in Davie County, Mrs. Harris was a daughter of the late James Brady and Esther Broadway Spry. She was a graduate of Cooleemee High School.
She was a legal secretary for Judge Grant of Mocksville and was secretary/ treasurer of Rowan Memorial Park. She later worked at Cone Mills.
A Baptist, she attended Salisbury Foursquare Gospel Church.
Survivors include daughters Marsha H. Clawson and Linda H. Jones, both of Salisbury; brothers M.O. Spry, Salisbury, and Charles David Spry, Hickory; sisters Shelby S. Cartner, Woodleaf, Shirley S. Charles ‘Buck’ Heilig
ROCKWELL — Charles Herman “Buck” Heilig, 70, Rockwell, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born March 2, 1930, in Rowan County, Mr. Heilig, a son of the late Herman Alfred and Zuelah Juanita Stoner Heilig, was educated in Rowan County schools.
He was a foreman with the State Highway Department of Transportation. A member of Grace Lutheran Church, he attended Organ Lutheran Church when his health permitted.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include wife Martha Halena Park Heilig; son Charles Glenn Heilig, Rockwell; brothers Robert Nolan Heilig, Salisbury, and Arnold Lawson Heilig, Lexington; and sisters Mary Juanita Heilig, China Grove, and Dorothy Heilig Agner, Salisbury.

David Dewey Hoffman
David Dewey Hoffman, 78, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at his home after six months of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.
Born Dec. 2, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Hoffman was a son of the late David Locke and Willie Mae Winecoff Hoffman. He was a graduate of Woodleaf High School.
Retired from Salisbury Marble and Granite Co., he was a monument setter for 34 years. He was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church and the Adult Sunday School Class. He had also served on the church council and as church treasurer.
Survivors include wife Bernice Julian Hoffman, whom he married Jan. 13, 1945; sons David Wayne and John Douglas Hoffman, both of Salisbury; daughters Judy Hoffman Shoemanker and Martha Hoffman Jones, both of Salisbury; brother Karl Hoffman, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Bethel Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Mark Reed. Burial, family plot in church cemetery.

Fred Hannah Johnson
Fred Hannah Johnson, Salisbury, formerly of Atlanta, Ga., died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Thomas Marion and Annie Leo Hannah Johnson. He was educated in the Atlanta city schools and was a graduate of Boy’s High School, Atlanta.
A veteran journeyman printer in the composing rooms of Atlanta newspapers for over 40 years, he served in support services for the U.S. Government during World War II in Minneapolis, Minn.
Mr. Johnson was the last surviving charter member of Peachtree Christian Church, Atlanta. He was also a member of Joseph C. Greenfield Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Shriners and Atlanta Seniors Golf Association.
Survivors include wife Victoria Philippa Paulin Johnson; daughters Virginia Philippa Johnson Braswell, Owensboro, Ky., and Anne Hannah Johnson Palmer, Salisbury; sister Olivia Johnson Harris, Orlando, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: The body will be cremated and a family service held at a later date in Atlanta.

John Walter Jordan
John Walter Jordan, 79, Salisbury, died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at his home.
Born Sept. 13, 1920, in Rowan County, Mr. Jordan, a son of the late William Franklin and Lillie Stricker Jordan, was educated in the Rowan County schools.
He retired from the Hefner VA Medical Center as a supervisor in the housekeeping department. A lifelong member of Faith Lutheran Church, he was a member of Faith American Legion Post 327 for 50 years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and a prisoner of war during World War II. He received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.
His wife, Elizabeth “Lib” Artz Jordan, died Feb. 23, 1994.
Survivors include sons Tommy W. Jordan, Salisbury, and Dennis L. Jordan, Rockwell; daughters Johonnie Sue Earnhardt, Rockwell, and Patsy J. Sellers, Salisbury; brothers Ralph Jordan, Salisbury, and Junior Lee Jordan, Rockwell; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE — Ruby Jane Smith, 84, 830 Lowder St., died Sunday (Sept. 10, 2000) at the Lutheran Home.
Born Sept. 15, 1915, in Stanly County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Silas Grover and Martha Sophronia Smith Smith. She had worked as a salesperson at Belk Department Store.
She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. She had also been an active circle member.
