Thomas Clinton Bowles
MOCKSVILLE —The funeral will be Saturday for Thomas Clinton Bowles, 38, U.S. Hwy. 64 West, who died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2000) at his home.
Born Nov. 2, 1961, in Iredell County, Mr. Bowles was a son of Nettie Ellen Bowles, Mocksville, and the late Thomas Masten Bowles. He was employed by Davie Funeral Service as administrator of opening and closing graves. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include brothers James Durham, Greeneville,Tenn., and Cletus Bowles, Midway; and sisters Mary KathrynDriver, Mocksville, and Joan Stoker, Chapin, S.C.

Catherine L. Brotherton
The funeral will be Saturday for Catherine L. Brotherton, 59, 211 Ridge Ave., who died Tuesday (Sept 5, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born July 18, 1941, in Rowan County, Ms. Brotherton was a daughter of the late Donald and Margaret Shipp Brotherton. She was a graduate of J.C. Price High School and had been employed as a certified nurses’ assistant at Salisbury Gardens.
Survivors include sons Kevin A. and Stephen D. Brotherton and MarshallK. Neeley, all of Salisbury; daughters Phoebe O. Shoats, Virginia, Valerie D. Neely, Lusby,Md., and Donna L. Neeley, Salisbury; brothers James Brotherton, Portsmouth, Va., and Donald Brotherton, Brooklyn, N.Y.; sisters Ruth Williams, Orlando, FLa., Mary Gaither, Salisbury, Doris Brotherton, Spencer, Judy Brotherton, Philadelphia, Pa.; and seven grandchildren.
Services:1 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Funeral Service, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Clodfelter. The body will be cremated.

Mark Edwin Green
CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Saturday for Mark Edwin Green, 40, 990 Old Linn Road, who died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2000) at his home.
Born Sept. 2, 1960, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Green was a son of Edwin and Betty Elliott Green, Kannapolis. He was a member of Rodgers Park Baptist Church and had been employed as a brick mason with Gate’s Construction.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include son Zach Green, China Grove; daughter Sidney Green,China Grove; and sisters Robin Green,Concord, and Patty Hipp, Kannapolis.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. CoyPrivette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Lena Green
KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Lena Coleman Green, 88, 600 Dixon Ave., who died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at her home after four months of declining health and three months of serious illness.
Born Feb. 6, 1912, in Livingston,Tenn., Mrs. Green was a daughter of the late Oscar N. and Amy Dennis Coleman. She retired fromCannonMills No. 6 weave room and was a member of First Baptist Church, Enochville.
Her husband, E. A. Green, died Nov. 23, 1985.
Survivors include daughter Ina Ruth Deason, of the home; sisters Naomi Gunnels, Akron, Ohio, Clelia Ramsey, Livingston, Tenn., and Odessa norrod, Monroe, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church,Enochville, conducted by the Rev. TomHuneycutt. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Clarence ‘Bub’ Hairston
LEXINGTON —The funeral will be Saturday for Clarence “Bub” Hairston, 81, Frank Hulin Road, Petersville community, who died Tuesday (Sept. 5, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem, after a year of declining health.
Born Sept. 29, 1918, in Davie County, Mr. Hairston was a son of the late William Thomas and Ruth Charman Hairston Hairston. Educated in the Davie and Davidson county schools, he was a deacon of Buncombe Baptist Church and past master of Corinthian Lodge 17 PHA, Mocksville.
Survivors include wife Arizonia H. Hairston; sons Roger Winston, Deptford, N.J., and the Rev. Clarence Hairston Jr., Winston-Salem; daughters Rosie Betha, Winston-Salem, Ever Lee Hairston, Cherry Hill, N.J., and Verona Bell,Lexington; brother the Rev. G.T. Hairston, Camden, N.J.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Essie Hoover Mack
LEXINGTON — The funeral is today for Essie Hoover Mack, 79, formerly of Highway 64 West, who died Wednesday (Sept. 6, 2000) at Golden Age Nursing Center.
Born Oct. 31, 1921, in Davidson County, Mrs. Mack was the daughter of the late Frank and Laura Hoover. She was a life member of Yadkin Star Baptist Church.
Her husband, the Rev. Hazel Mack, preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Johnny Walker, Lexington; daughters Gaynell Larose and Mary Joan Wright, both of Lexington; brothers Baxter Hoover and John Gilbert “Bub” Hoover, both of Lexington; and sisters Ruth Staplefoote, Gladys Holmes, Kathy Evans,Lois Andrews, all of Lexington, and Pearlene Moss, Winston-Salem.

Born March 6, 1940, in Pageland, S.C., Ms. McManus was a daughter of Connie Lee Funderburk and Alberta McManus.

Gene Sweatt
KANNAPOLIS — Eugene Floyd “Gene” Sweatt, 80, 504 Ford St., died Thursday (Sept. 7, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.
Born Jan. 15, 1920, in Marlboro County, S.C., Mr. Sweatt was a son of the late Floyd and Janie Hare Sweatt. He retired in 1987 from Kannapolis Transit Co., where he had worked as a bus driver for 30 years. He was formerly employed by Cannon Mills.
A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Ben Avenue Freewill Baptist Church.
His wife, Doris Haskins Sweatt, died July 16, 1997.
Survivors include daughters Judy Roberts and Elsie Mae Drye, both of Kannapolis; sons Gary M. Sweatt, Kannapolis, and Harold Sweatt, Nashville, Tenn.; sisters Lillian Biles, Charlotte, Irene Mullis, Kannapolis, and Ella Mae Sweatt, Goose Creek, S.C.; brother Leon Sweatt, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: 8 this evening, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dean Mitchem. Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Carolina Memorial Park.
