Ervin James Absher

KANNAPOLIS — Ervin James Absher, 84, 1003 Little John Trail, died Friday (Sept. 1, 2000) at his home.

Born April 9, 1916, in Wilkes County, Mr. Absher was a son of the late Arthur and Mary Miller Absher. He had retired from 1983 fromCannon Mills Co.’s BC overhauling department.

He was a member of Shady Brook Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and served on the property committee. He was twice elected Man of the Year at the church.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Nina White Absher; son Gene Absher, Kannapolis; brothers Troy, Howard, Arthur Junior and Grant Absher, all of Kannapolis, and Muncie Absher, North Wilkesboro; sisters Emma Marshall, Greensboro, Leanner Foster, Forest City, and Reba Elledge, North Wilkesboro; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Shady Brook Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charlie Littlejohn and Mike Hubbard. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Little John Trail.

John M. Adams

FAIRLESS HILLS, Pa. — John M. Adams, 54, Fairless Hills, died Thursday (Aug. 31, 2000) at Frankford Hospital, Bucks County Division, Falls Township.

Born in Philadelphia, Adams was the husband of Judith E. Frye Adams, who grew up in China Grove, N.C. They both attended Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C.

Services: Wednesday, 7 p.m., Resurrection Lutheran Church, Levittown.

Laura Elizabeth Alexander

Laura Elizabeth Alexander, 16, 123 Pecan Lane, died Friday (Sept. 1, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mary Deal Bost

Mary Deal Bost, 96, died Friday (Sept. 1, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Home.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Joshua Paul Day
Steven Matthew Day

KANNAPOLIS — Joshua Paul Day, 17, and Steven Matthew Day, 14, 1948 Stonewyck Ave., died Thursday ((Aug. 31, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital, Lexington, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Joshua was born Jan. 8, 1983, in Oneida County, N.Y. A former honor student at Northwest Cabarrus High School, he was currently attending Ledford High School in Davidson County, where he played junior varsity soccer.

Matthew was born Aug. 4, 1986, also in Oneida County, N.Y. He was an eighth-grade student at Ledford Middle School, where he played football. He had previously attended Northwest Cabarrus Middle School, where he played basketball and was on the track team. He was a member of the Challenge and Classic Soccer Team.

They both attended First Assembly in Concord.

Survivors include parents Mark W. and Mary (Mimi) Soggs Day, of the home; sister Rebecca S. Day, Kannapolis; and grandparents Paul and Barbara Day, Welch, W.Va., and the Rev. Nelson and Carol Soggs of New Hartford, N.Y.

Services: Sunday, 4 p.m., Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Grogan.

Visitation: Today, 7-9 p.m., at the funeral home.

 

James R. Faulkenbury

CHINA GROVE —James Rupert Faulkenbury, 88, 2330 Saw Road, died Thursday (Aug. 31, 2000) at Carillon Assisted Living Center, Gastonia.

Born March 11, 1912, in Union County, Mr. Faulkenbury was a son of the late Emmanuel H. and Florence Plyler Faulkenbury.He was educated in the Union County schools. Retired from Cannon Mills, he also farmed.

He was a member of Landis Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir. A former deacon, he also served as treasurer of his Sunday school class treasurer.

His wife, Thelma Rogers Faulkenbury, died April 17, 1997.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Kenneth Faulkenbury, Gastonia; brothers Andrew Deelee Faulkenbury, Kannapolis, Lonnie Alvin Faulkenbury, Locust, and Ralph Faulkenbury, Greensboro; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Landis Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt, pastor, the Rev. Dale Faulkenbury, a grandson, and Steve Rollins. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Joyce Merle Dorsett

STANFIELD — Joyce Merle Chiswell Dorsett, 83, 24611-1 Ridgecrest Road, died Thursday (Aug. 31, 2000) at her home.

Born Feb. 21, 1917, in Battram, England, she was the daughter of the late Florence Ashby and George Chiswell. A homemaker, she was a World War II veteran of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain.

Her husband, Jack Dorsett, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Rowell Dorsett of Stanfield; daughter Mary Jo Brown of Charlotte; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Sunday, 4 p.m., at Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ronald Russell.

Visitation: 6-9 p.m. today, at the home on Ridgecrest Road.

 

Ruby T. Ervin

Ruby T. Ervin, 73, 532 Kiser Ave., died at her home Friday (Sept. 1, 2000). She had been in declining health since 1996 and seriously ill for three weeks.

Born Jan. 8, 1927, in Kannapolis, she was the daughter of the late George Oscar and Sarah L. Roseman Towell. A son, Charles Mitchell Ervin, died in 1981. Mrs. Ervin had retired from the textile industry.

Survivors include husband R.L. “Bob” Ervin; daughters Sherry Goforth of Kannapolis and Vickie Smallwood of Hypoluxo, Fla; and sisters Dee Hamm of Kannapolis and Heidi Peck of Hollywood, Fla.

Services: Sunday, 7 p.m., Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Don Shumake and Sarah Weaver. Graveside service, Monday, 10 a.m., Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: Sunday, 6-7 p.m., at the funeral home. The family will make its headquarters at the home on Kiser Avenue.

Lottie Miller Greene

CHARLOTTE —The funeral for Lottie Miller Greene of Charlotte, formerly of Salisbury, will be held Sunday.

Educated at Monroe Street Elementary Schoool in Salisbury, she graduated in 1962 from Price High School. She also attended Livingstone College.

A teacher’s assistant at First Ward Elementary School, Mrs. Greene was a member of Greenville Memorial AME Zion Church, where she served on the Board of Ushers and was a member of Missionary Society No. 2.

Survivors include husband Willie C. Greene; sons Eric A. Greene and Nasir Aziz Greene; daughter LaTanya E. Greene; mother and stepfather Bertha and James Burno; brothers George Miller and Ernest O. Miller; sisters Alice Miller-Caple and Daisy M. Brown; and two grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, 2:45 p.m., Greenville Memorial AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. George McNeely.

Visitation: 2-2:45 p.m. Sunday, at the church.

Sarah Kurfees Harris

Sarah Belle Kurfees Harris, 89, Salisbury, died Thursday (Aug. 31, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare.

Born May 9, 1911, in Rowan County, Mrs. Harris was the daughter of the late Jenny Shives and Wiley Kurfees. She was employed as a seamstress for various firms in the Rowan County area. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Her husband, Henry Clay Harris, died Sept. 5, 1985.

Survivors include sons Ronald C. Harris of Atlanta and John W. Harris of Winston-Salem; daughter Bonzie Everson of Salisbury; brothers John Kurfees of Salisbury and Jack Kurfees of Cooleemee; sister Ruby Hand of Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, 4 p.m., Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tom Roberts. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: Today, 7-8:30 p.m., at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Bonzie Everson, 1000 Mocksville Ave.

 

Bertha Morgan Harrington

KANNAPOLIS — Bertha Morgan Harrington, 91, 2900 Lane St., died Thursday (Aug. 31, 2000)at Big Elm Nursing Center after six months of declining health.

Born Aug. 21, 1909, in Moore County, Mrs. Harrington was a daughter of the late Daniel Thomas and Mary Jane Williams Morgan. She had retired fromCannon Mills, Plant 1, washcloth department.

Her husband, John Fletcher Harrington, died May 10, 1984.

Survivors include daughters Lillie Mae Gainey and Margaret Cline, both of Kannapolis; sons J. Hoyet Harrington, Mount Pleasant, Kenneth and William Lee Harrington, both of Salisbury, and Charles Harrington, Burbank, Calif.; sisters Bessie Furr, Boulder City, Nev., Pauline Davis, Seagrove, Sudie Smith and Lucille McNeil, both of Asheboro, Elzora Shores, Winston-Salem, and Mary Etta Campbell, Newport News, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tom Huneycutt. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.

CHINA GROVE — Rachel Weddington Hunter, 64, China Grove, died Friday (Sept. 1, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.
