LINWOOD — Howard “Dale” Ardell
Brown, 57, Linwood, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 4, 1943, in Davie County,
Mr. Brown was a son of Howard H. Brown, Linwood, and the late Edna
Spry Brown. He was educated in the Rowan County schools and a
graduate of North Rowan High School, Spencer.
A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy
during the Cuban crisis. He was a member of VFWPost 3006.
Retired, he worked as a barber at W.G.
Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, for 23 years.
Survivors, in addition to his father,
include brother Jerry Wayne Brown, Salisbury; and sister Kathy Budny,
Salisbury.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m.
Wednesday, National Cemetery, Statesville Blvd. site, Salisbury,
conducted by the Rev. Don Phillips. Military rites by Rowan County
Veterans Council.

Catherine Waiters Caldwell
Catherine Waiters Caldwell, 77, 612
W. Liberty St., died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical
Center after a period of declining health.
Born Dec. 22, 1923, in Salisbury,
Mrs. Caldwell was a daughter of the late Thomas Waiters and Evelyn
Little Waiters Howie. She attended J.C.Price High School.
She was a retired domestic worker and
was a former member of Gethsemane Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her
husband, John Lee Caldwell, and son, John Edward Caldwell.
Survivors include sons Henry and
James R. Caldwell, both of Salisbury; daughter Mae “Kitty”Riley,
Middletown, Conn.; sisters Nevolie “Tootsie” Caldwell, Ethel Mae
Waiters and Beatrice Morgan, all of Salisbury; four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.

KANNAPOLIS — Ethel Cromer
Christian, 87, Big Elm Retirement Center, formerly of Victoria
Avenue, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord, after a year of declining health.
Born Dec. 27, 1912, in Franklin
County, Ga., Mrs. Christian, a daughter of the late Willis David and
Aline Belk Cromer, was a member of Shadybrook Baptist Church. She
retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1, wash cloth department.
Her husband, Curtis Cleveland
Christian, died in Nov. 1999.
Survivors include daughter Gail Duff,
Williamsburg, Va.; brother Walter Cromer, Royston, Ga.; and three
grandchildren.

Laura Louise Coble
Laura Louise Coble, 34, 2002 Rosemont
St., died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000)at her home after several years of
declining health and two months of serious illness.
Born May 16, 1966, in Salisbury, Miss
Coble was a daughter of Robert L. “Bob” and Peggy Henry Coble of
Salisbury. Educated in the Salisbury city schools, she was a 1984
graduate of Salisbury High School and a graduate of Central Piedmont
Community College, Charlotte.
She was a member of St. John’s
Lutheran Church.
Survivors, in addition to her
parents, include sisters Judy Coble, Spencer, and Kathy C. Allen,
Wilmington; and paternal grandmother Lucy Ruth, Franklinville.
Services: Memorial, 1 p.m. Wednesday,
chapel at St. John’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev.
Jennifer Ginn and the Rev. John B. Tucker, associate pastors, and
the Rev. David K. Huddle, pastor, Beck’s Lutheran Church,

LEXINGTON — Henry Clay Hartley, 69,
2543 Becky Hill Road, Yadkin College community, died Sunday (Oct.
29, 2000)at Brian Center Nursing Home after three years of declining
health.
Born Aug. 22, 1931, in Davidson
County, Mr. Hartley was a son of the late Henry Mock and Elsie
ShoafHartley. He retired from Dixie Furniture.
A member of Friendship United
Methodist Church, he attended First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Floyd Lingle Ketchie
The funeral will be Wednesday for
Floyd Lingle Ketchie, 73, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Oct. 29,
2000)at Durham VAMedical Center after a period of declining health.
Born Aug. 10, 1927, in Rowan County,
Mr. Ketchie, a son of the late Harvie Rose and Jessie Swing Ketchie,
was educated in the Rowan County schools. He was a Baptist.
Retired after 15 years from Henry
Link Furniture Manufacturing, Lexington, he was a furniture builder
and craftsman.
His wife, Ester Myrick Ketchie, died
May 3, 1992.
Survivors include stepsons Jerry and
Raymond Bowers, both of Salisbury; stepdaughter Patricia “Pat”
Holloman, Salisbury; brother Lawrence Ketchie, Spencer; sister
Catherine Barnes, Newport News, Va.; 16 grandchildren; and 10
great-grandchildren.

Mary Mable Phillips Phillips, 81, 365
Kelly Drive, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical
Center after several years of declining health and four days of
serious illness.
Born June 13, 1919, in Rowan County,
Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of Robert and Laura Phillips. She was
educated in the Rowan County schools and had been employed as a
domestic worker.
A member of Henderson Grove Baptist
Church, she was a missionary and member of the Gospel Choir.
She was preceded in death by children
Harvey Phillips Jr., Samuel Phillips, LeTrica Phillips and Dorothy
Phillips Wilks. Two grandsons also preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband Harvey
Phillips; sons Thomas and Willie Lee Phillips, both of Salisbury;
daughters Mary P.Gray and Carol E. Phillips, both of Salisbury;
grandchildren reared in the home Diane Gilmore, Gerald Phillips and
Tamika Phillips, all of Salisbury; 18 other grandchildren; 40
great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

70, 1700 N. I-85 Service Road, Charlotte, died Saturday (Oct. 28,
2000)at Mercy Hospital,Charlotte.
Born Feb. 15, 1930, in Stanly County,
Mr. Speights was a son of the late Dee King David and Vernie Bost
Speights. He had retired as an overseer at Wiscassett Mills.
A son, Johnny Speights, preceded him
in death.

sisters Lois Hendley, Mount Pleasant, and Maxine Underwood,

Helen Barger Weaver, 81, Salisbury,
died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000)at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks
after a period of declining health.
Born Feb. 12, 1918, in Rowan County,
Mrs. Weaver, a daughter of the late Locke and Eva Schenk Barger, was
educated in the Rowan County schools. She retired from Fiber
Industries, now KoSa, and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church,
WELCA and the Keen Age Club.
Her husband, Marvin C. Weaver, died
Sept. 2, 1986.
Survivors include sons Ronald Eugene
Weaver, Salisbury, and Gary Lee Weaver, Mount Ulla; daughter Shirley
Ann Weaver James, Mocksville; brother Floyd Adam Barger, Salisbury;
sister Margaret Weaver, Salisbury; 11 grandchildren; and 13
great-grandchildren.
