KANNAPOLIS — Raymond Howard Hendrix, 79, 1008 Harris St., died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000)at Autumn Care of Salisbury after a period of declining health.
Born Nov. 11, 1921, in Danville, Va., Mr. Hendrix was a son of the late J.H. and Luda Mae Mefford Hendrix. He had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 5 spinning room. He was a member of Mount Zion Freewill Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters Cynthia Hanes and Renee Sawyer, both of Kannapolis; sons Michael Hendrix, Cookville, Tenn., and Terry W. Hendrix, China Grove; brothers Jerry Hendrix, Kannapolis, and the Rev. Theodore Hendrix, Denver, N.C.; sisters Eileen Haymoor, Winston-Salem, and Pauline Ross, Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Tuesday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by a son, the Rev. Theodore Hendrix.

SPENCER — The funeral will be Tuesday for Ruby Lee Veach Menster, 78, Spencer, who died Saturday (Oct. 28, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health and a week of serious illness.
Born Feb. 19, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Menster was a daughter of the late Uyless Sidney and Mary McVicker Spence Veach. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A homemaker, she had retired as a seamstress at Laguna Sportswear, Salisbury. She was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include husband Charlie Dawson Menster, whom she married Dec. 24, 1937; sons Charlie Lee and James Terry Menster, both of Salisbury; daughter Carol M. Pepper, Spencer; brothers John, Julius and Larry Veach, all of Salisbury, and Sidney and George Veach, both of Rockwell; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

CHINA GROVE — Herbert Lee Overcash, 87, 175 Ketchie Estate Road, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000)at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.
Born Aug. 7, 1913, in Rowan County, Mr. Overcash was a son of the late Arthur Abraham and Eupha Overcash Overcash. He was educated at Deaton School.
Mr. Overcash owned and operated H.L. Overcash Garage for 46 years. A member of Grace Lutheran Church, Salisbury, he served as benevolent treasurer for 20 years. A former Sunday school secretary, he served several terms on the council. He was a member of the Hoyte Moose Sunday School Class.
Survivors include wife Nettie “Net” Holshouser Overcash; son Harold Arthur Overcash, Rockwell; brothers Fred Overcash, Rockwell, Homer Overcash, Salisbury, and Earl Overcash, China Grove; sister Roseanna Overcash Deal, China Grove; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Born Jan. 27, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Ida Williams Carter. A homemaker, she was educated in the Rowan County schools.
Her husband, James Paul Phillips, died Nov. 9, 1959, and a son, Charles Carter, died in 1991.

Dr. John Edmund Wear
Dr. John Edmund Wear, 79, former mayor of Salisbury, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 10, 1921, in Haleyville, Ala., Dr. Wear was a son of the late Drayton H. and GraceLakeman Wear. A graduate of the University of Alabama and Northwestern University Medical School, he interned in the U.S. Naval Hospital at Great Lakes, Ill. During his three years with the U.S. Navy, he served as a lieutenant at Bethesda Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md.
He did his graduate training at Duke University and also studied at Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, Oak Ridge, Tenn. In 1952, he left the teaching staff of Duke University Medical Center to become associated with Dr. Thomas Thurston in the practice of radiology.
He was a diplomate of the American Board of Radiology and a member of the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the America Roentgen Ray Society, the North Carolina Medical Society and the American Medical Association. He was a past president of the N.C. Radiological Society, the Rowan-Davie Medical Society and the Rowan Regional Medical Center staff.
Dr. Wear was also a past president of the Salisbury Rotary Club and the Salisbury Country Club. He was a trustee of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and chairman of Tri-County Mental Health Clinic board of directors. Chairman of the Rowan Parks and Recreation Department for 12 years, he was a guiding force in the development of Dan Nicholas Park.
In 1988, he was named Salisbury Lions Club Man of the Year. A plaque in his honor was unveiled in the X-ray department of Rowan Regional Medical Center on Dec. 4, 1989.
Dr. Wear was a Rowan County commissioner from 1976-1980 and served as its chairman. He served as mayor of Salisbury from 1985-1991. He is the only person to have served as chairman of the county board and mayor of Salisbury.
He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, the former Susie Hester of Wendell; sons Dr. John Edmund Wear Jr. and Ralph Wear, both of Salisbury, and James R. Wear, Vail, Colo.; daughter Susan Wear Kluttz, Salisbury; sister Louise Rutledge, Haleyville, Ala.; and seven grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday,St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern. Burial, City Memorial Park.
Visitation: 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the home on Pine Tree Road.
