Obituaries

            Anne Thomas Brown

GRANITE QUARRY — Anne Thomas Brown, 80, Granite Quarry, died Saturday (Oct. 28, 2000)at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Oct. 15, 1920, in Rowan County, Mrs. Brown was the daughter of Junius D. and Callie Frick Thomas. A 1938 graduate of Granite Quarry High School, she was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Howard Wesley Brown, died Jan. 30, 2000.

Survivors include son Howard W. Brown Jr., Granite Quarry; daughters Carol B. Busby, Franklin, Tenn., Nancy B. Trice, Signal Mountain, Tenn., Susan B. Trivette, Salisbury, and Jan Brown, Sherrills Ford; brothers Carl Thomas, Charlotte, Ralph Thomas, Salisbury, Howard Thomas, Sashe, Texas, and Larry Thomas, Mooresville; sisters Helen Cowan, Betty Witty, Joyce Trexler and Kay Abernathy, all of Salisbury, and June Owen, Corpus Christi, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Kay Gottula, pastor, and the Rev. J. William Hoyle. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Earl Ray Cooper

MOUNT PLEASANT — Earl Ray Cooper, 63, 28693 Rowland Road, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

He was the brother of Lauris Whitley, Albemarle.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Ralph Shelton, and the Rev. Gary Posey. Burial, Oak Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, Mount Pleasant.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Paul Owen ‘P.O.’ Inge

Paul Owen “P.O.” Inge, 78, formerly of North Jackson Street, died Saturday (Oct. 28, 2000)at Spencer Health Care Center, Spencer, after three years of declining health.

Born Oct. 16, 1922, in Gretna, Va., Mr. Inge was a son of the late Joseph Hortense and Tennie Dalton Inge. Educated in the Gretna schools, he was a World War IIveteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

He spent 42 years with Southern Railway, as brakeman, conductor and engineer, before retiring in 1982. He was a member of the United Transportation Union, Spencer Moose Lodge, Samuel C. Hart American Legion Post No. 14 and First Baptist Church of Spencer.

Survivors include brothers Raleigh J. and Edmond L. Inge, both of Gretna, Va.; and sister Ree I. Shelton, Salisbury.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, pastor, First Baptist Church of Spencer. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum, with military graveside rites by the Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence of a nephew, Mike Shelton, 315 Baymont Drive.

Fernandas ‘Bud’ Keaton

Fernandas C. “Bud” Keaton, 87, 1331 W. Horah St., died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after six years of declining health and three days of serious illness.

Born Feb. 25, 1912, in Iredell County, Mr. Keaton was a son of the late Clayton Rockwell and Emma Leach Keaton. Educated in the public schools of Rowan County, he had retired from Southern Railway. He was affiliated with his brother, B.F. Keaton of Keaton’s Chicken, Cleveland.

Mr. Keaton was a member of Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, where he was a class leader. He also served on the usher board, the steward board and the kitchen committee. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.

His wife, Lula Wilks Keaton, died July 31, 2000.

Survivors include son Larry F. Keaton, of the home; daughter Hazel T. Keaton, of the home; a grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Murray Edwards, pastor. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery, with military rites by the Salisbury Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Roy Eugene Livengood

Roy Eugene “Book” Livengood, 68, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Oct. 19, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Livengood was a son of the late Jack and Zona McDaniel Livengood. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was employed with Rowan Cotton Mill for 31 years before retiring. A U.S. Army veteran, he was a member of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Frances Koon Livengood, whom he married April 3, 1955; son Gary Eugene Livengood, Rockwell; daughter Janet L. Cottingham, Salisbury; brother J.C. Livengood, Lexington; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Don Newman, pastor, the Rev. Jack Luther and the Rev. Ronald Young. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

W.T. Strickland Jr.

LANDIS — W.T. Strickland Jr., 76, 2305 N. Cannon Blvd., died Saturday (Oct. 28, 2000) at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after years of declining health.

Born March 22, 1924, in Rowan County, Mr. Strickland was a son of the late Moleda Ewings and William Thomas Strickland. He was employed with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, maintenance department, for 25 years until he retired in 1965 due to disability. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World WarII.

Survivors include wife Ruth Gibbs Strickland; daughter Sheila Biggerstaff, Kannapolis; stepsons Jerry McInnis, China Grove, Kenneth McInnis, Marion, and Jimmy McInnis, Harmony; brothers James Strickland, Kannapolis, Kenneth Strickland, California, and Jerry Strickland, Las Vegas; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steven Mowery.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

James William Troutman

RICHFIELD — James William Troutman, 69, 48324 High Rock Road, died Saturday (Oct. 29, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born June 9, 1931, in Stanly County, Mr. Troutman was a son of the late William Jacob and Nellie Heglar Troutman. Retired as a truck driver for Vulcan Materials, he was a member of Richfield United Methodist Church.

Mr. Troutman was preceded in death by a son, James Ray Troutman.

Survivors include wife Irene Culp Troutman; son Ricky Troutman, Richfield; daughter Dianne Beachum, Richfield; sisters Mamie Burgess, Richmond, Va., and Annie Thompson, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Richfield United Methodist Church, conducted by David Lowe. Burial, cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Ethel White Wilhelm

Ethel White Wilhelm, 85, Liberty Commons, formerly of Old Concord Road, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born July 14, 1915, in Alexander County, she was a daughter of George Washington and Frances Lou White. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she worked in the sheet department at Cannon Mills for many years. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Duke Monroe Wilhelm, died May 18, 2000.

Survivors include Coy, Wayne, Charles and Paul Wilhelm, all of Salisbury, and Hugh Wilhelm, Rockwell; daughter Doris W. Parks, Kannapolis; sister Willie Carrigan, China Grove; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-7:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at their respective homes.
