Arcella Thomas Boles

ALBEMARLE — Arcella Thomas Boles, 66, 1010 Patton Ave., died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at the home of her son in Mount Gilead.

Born Sept. 28, 1934, in Anson County, she was the daughter of the late Olaf D. Allen and Lloyd Edwards Thomas. Mrs. Boles had retired as a security guard with Collins & Aikman.

Survivors include husband Kenneth Boles; daughters Leigh Ellen Childers and Cecilia Mauney, both of Albemarle; son Perry Childers, Mount Gilead; sister Laura A. Simpson, Rock Hill, S.C.; brothers Curtis E. Thomas, Hickory Grove, S.C., and Lloyd J. Thomas, Fort Mill, S.C.; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m., Sunday, Stanly Gardens of Memory, conducted by the Rev. Curtis H. Smith. There will be no formal visitation.

Memorials: Hospice of Stanly County, 960 N. Second St. Albemarle, NC 28001.

 

Fernandas ‘Bud’ Keaton

Fernandas C. “Bud” Keaton, 87, 1331 W. Horah St., died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after six years of declining health and three days of serious illness.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Foy L. Latham

LEXINGTON—Foy Lee Latham, 82, Welcome Bethesda Road, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital after five years of declining health and a serious illness that began in February.

He was born in Davidson County on June 13, 1918, son of the late Harvey and Saddie Weaver Latham. He had retired from Henry Link Furniture.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of VFW Post 3074, American Legion Post 8 and Bethesda United Methodist Church.

A son Johnny Hulin, died in 1986.

Survivors include wife Marie Hulin Latham; son Jimmy Hulin of Linwood; brothers Willard and Jack Latham, both of Lexington; sisters Kathleen Michael, Lila Barnes, Irene Barnes and Martha Leonard, all of Lexington, and Lucille Queen of Tennessee; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Bethesda United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. James White. Burial, church cemetery, with military graveside rites by VFW Post 3074.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. today at Davidson Funeral Home.

 

Roy Eugene Livengood

Roy Eugene Livengood, 68, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mack Pope Mills

MOORESVILLE — Mack Pope Mills, 79, Wedgewood Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 22, 1921, in Mooresville, Mr. Mills was a son of the late Floyd Triplett and Lillian Pope Mills.

He had retired from Burlington Industries, Mooresville, after more than 40 years with the company. A World War II veteran, he served with the U.S. Army’s 807th Tank Destroyer Battalion.

He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and Tom Swann VFWPost 1072.

His wife, Norma Gudger Mills, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Norman F. Mills, Hickory; daughter Mary Mack Benson, Mooresville; brother Harold Mills, Mooresville; sisters Erlene Christenbury, Dorothy Jones and Addie Mae Helms, all of Mooresville; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Phillip DeBerry. Burial Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Betty Mullis Phillips

KANNAPOLIS — Betty Mullis Phillips, 69, 306 N. East Ave., died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000) at her home after three months of declining health.

Born Oct. 9, 1931, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Phillips was a daughter of the late Charlie F. and Bettie Lemly Mullis. She had retired in 1993 after 38 years with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, where she had worked in the sewing department and the cutting room.

She was a member of Community Chapel, Davidson.

Survivors include husband Cleo C. Phillips; son Ken L. Trull, Davidson; daughters Janice T. Ortiz, Salisbury, and Susan T. Honeycutt, Mount Pleasant; stepsons Bruce Phillips,China Grove, and Larry C. Phillips, Kannapolis; stepdaughter Pam Harrington, Kannapolis; brothers James “Duck” Mullis, Grady Mullis and Harold “Bud” Mullis, all of Kannapolis; sister Hilda M. Bradle, Mint Hill; five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. B. Todd Posey and the Rev. Elmer Crisco. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on North East Ave.

Nealle Helen Pickler

NEW LONDON — Nealle Helen Pickler, 81, 36702 Old Salisbury Road, died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born June 26, 1919, in Stanly County, Miss Pickler was a daughter of the late Pleasant Cornelius “Neal” and Emma Frances Harwood Pickler.

Retired as a molder for Federal Pacific Electric, she was formerly employed by Wiscassett Hosiery Mill. A member of First Baptist Church, she was a former secretary for her Sunday school class.

Survivors include brother Claude F. Pickler, New London.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Timothy Swaringen. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

Dr. James G. Poolos

RICHFIELD—Dr. James G. Poolos, 69, 42717 Caudle Road, died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born Dec. 25, 1930, in Atlanta, he was the son of the late Joanna Zervas and George Nick Poolos. Dr. Poolos had retired as chairman of the music department at Catawba College, Salisbury. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Dr. Poolos was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church. He received the Craig Barrow Outstanding Student Award as a student at the University of Georgia.

A trombonist in the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, he founded the Catawba Brass Quintet and performed with it from 1985 to 2000.

Survivors include wife Hazel Partridge Poolos; sons Frank Poolos, Albemarle, and Mike Poolos, Spring Lake; daughter Lisa Many, Carrboro; brother Aleck Poolos, Lawrenceville, Ga.; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service, Nov. 5, a Sunday, 2 p.m., at Pfeiffer University Chapel, Misenheimer, conducted by the Rev. William Faggart.

Visitation: At the chapel, after the service.

Hunter Alexander Queen

MOCKSVILLE — Infant Hunter Alexander Queen, Farmington Road, died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Aug. 21, 2000 in Iredell County, he was the son of Wendy M. Zimmerman and Matthew H. Queen, Mocksville.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include maternal grandparents Kevin and Rachel Zimmerman and paternal grandparents Gary and Jennie Gordan.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Elbaville United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jack Wallace. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, at the church.

Nancy P. Thames

KANNAPOLIS—Nancy P. Thames, 79, 913 Oakshade Ave., died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born Sept. 12, 1921, in Pageland, S.C., Mrs. Thames was the daughter of the late Nettie Wright and William T. Pittman. She had retired as owner and operator of Fancy That Beauty Shop.

Her first husband, Clarence Lee Mesmer, died in January 1981.

Survivors include husband Horace Milton Thames; son Michael F. Mesmer, Concord; stepson Horace M. Thames Jr., Concord; half sister Ethel “Viola” Oliver, Chesterfield, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Memorial service, 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rick Dawson and the Rev. Billy Carey.

Visitation: 2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Bashaer Wall

STATESVILLE—John Bashaer Wall, 87, 1246 Mitchell Ave., died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after a lengthy illness.

Born Dec. 27, 1912, in Denton, he was the son of the late Zeola and Sanky Branson Wall. Retired from Statesville Flour Mills, he was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church.

His wife, Helen Meredith Raper Wall, died Jan. 14, 1988.

Survivors include daughter Rebecca Wall Sasser, Salisbury; sister Lib Phillips, Winston-Salem; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m., Sunday, Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rob Rollins and the Rev. Beverly Coppley. Burial, Iredell Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

James Harold Thompson

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Sunday for James Harold Thompson, 66, Liberty Church Road, who died Thursday (Oct. 26, 2000)at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born March 3, 1934, in Wilkes County, Mr. Thompson was a son of Eva Reavis Thompson, Yadkinville, and the late Odell Thompson. Retired as a truck driver for Lee Distribution Co., he had also worked part-time for Wisecarver Trucking. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he attended Eatons Baptist Church.

A son, James Harold Thompson Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Mary “Polly” Carter Thompson; daughter Sharon T. Cave, Mocksville; brothers Reavis Thompson, Yadkinville, and Roy Lee Thompson, Mocksville; and sister Betty Ward, Statesville.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David Gilbreath, the Rev. David Kiser and Richard Carter. Burial, Eatons Baptist Church cemetery.

Naomi Dalrymple Wilson

McDONALD, Tenn. — Naomi Dalrymple Wilson, 82, McDonald, died Friday (Oct. 27, 2000).

A native of Macon, Ga., she grew up in Salisbury, N.C., where she graduated from Boyden High School in 1935. She also graduated from Salisbury Business College.

She also attended Southern Junior College and Washington Missionary College in Maryland. Mrs. Wilson and her husband were employed by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Virginia, Georgia and North Carolina prior to moving to Tennessee in 1968.

She had retired in 1979 from the Southern College Press after 10 years of service. She was a member of McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Darlene Becker.

Survivors include husband Woodrow M. Wilson; sons David Wilson, Apison, and Kenneth Wilson, Augusta, Ga.; daughter Carolyn Achata, McDonald; sister Lavinia Goldman, Salisbury, N.C.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m., Sunday, McDonald Road Seventh-day Adventist Church, with Dwight Herod and Delmar Anderson officiating. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30. Burial, Collegedale Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8:30 p.m. today, Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.
