A local Pillowtex official said on Thursday that some local Pillowtex workers will not work next week. Plant 16 in China Grove and Plant 4 in Kannapolis will stand idle for a week beginning Monday.
Both Fieldcrest Cannon plants make sheets, and company officials say they have too many of those already. Slow retail sales continue to plague the entire home textiles industry.
“It’s a normal standing, as we’ve done in the past; it’s for inventory control, too much sheeting,” said Don Mallo, vice president for human resources. “All other plants are operating full-bore.”
Pillowtex has closed some of its local plants for a week four times this year, including the traditional July 4 week off. As during the other unexpected weeks off, workers will receive an unemployment check amounting to about half their weekly wages.
