Addie Hathcock Barrier
CONCORD — Addie Lee Hathcock Barrier, 89, 114
Cline St., died Tuesday (Oct. 24, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center after five
months of declining health.
Born Aug. 20, 1911, in Stanly County, Mrs.
Barrier was a daughter of the late Rev. Adam Alexander and Cora Smith Hathcock.
Formerly employed with Cannon Mills Company’s Plant 1, No. 4 cloth room for 11
years, she was a homemaker.
A charter member of Brookdale Baptist Church,
Kannapolis, she taught Sunday school and was a former member of the choir.
Her husband, Loy David Barrier, died May 18.

Survivors include daughter Doris Barrier McBee,
Newton; brothers Gerald Hathcock, Concord, and Olin Hathcock, Weaverville;
sister Lucy Turrentine, Concord; two grandsons; and one great-grandson.

OAKBORO — Bryant Lydall Clark, 20, 423 Hamilton
Road, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000)at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.
Born July 31, 1980, in Stanly County, Mr. Clark
was a son of Undrey Bost of the home. Educated at West Stanly High School, he
was a member of Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.

Monica B. Holmes, Salisbury; and paternal grandmother Versie S. Clark, Oakboro.

William Eli Jackson
LOUISBURG — William Eli Jackson, 87, Louisburg,
formerly of Spencer, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) at Franklin Regional Medical
Center.
He was a Spencer resident for more than 50 years.
Survivors include wife Thelma M. Jackson,
Spencer; daughters Jean Smith, Louisburg, and Nancy Kaye, Kannapolis; son Jimmy
Jackson, Spencer; sisters Thelma Luther, Asheboro, and Ruby Page, Salisbury;

William ‘Flipper’ Knox
HARMONY — William Keith “Flipper” Knox, 42,
146 Buckhead Road, died Saturday (Oct. 21, 2000)from injuries sustained in a
motorcycle accident.
Born July 30, 1958, in Rowan County, Mr.Knox was
a son of Corabelle Davidson Knox and the late William LeAnder Knox. He attended
the Rowan County schools and was a graduate of South Iredell High School,
Troutman. He attended Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church at an early age.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include
daughters Lakeitha “Keitha” and Lakeita “Toya” Knox, both of the home,
Candice “Peaches” Roseboro, Statesville, Shonika Eckles, Harmony, Private
Marcie Roseboro and Meketa White, both of Statesville, and Amber Heath,
Gastonia; brother Melvin Smith, Mooresville; sisters Betty Robinson, Charlotte,
and Pamela Jones and Sandra Knox, both of Salisbury; paternal grandmother Mary
Jane Knox, Cleveland; maternal grandmother Haldren Davidson, Statesville; and
one granddaughter.
Services: 3 p.m. Mount Nebo Baptist Church,
conducted by the Rev. Norman Dudley. The body will be placed in the church at 2.
Burial, Belmont Cemetery.

Rosa Mae Barnes Myers
The funeral will be Thursday for Rosa Mae Barnes
Myers, 75, Salisbury, who died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000)at her home.
Born May 29, 1925, in Rowan County, Mrs. Myers, a
daughter of the late Henry Eugene and Geneva Blalock Barnes, was educated in the
Rowan County schools.
She retired in 1985 after 20 years from
Hoechst-Celanese. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Her husband, Albert Benjamin Myers, died Dec. 4,
1983.
Survivors include son Gene Myers, Woodleaf;
daughter Geneva Lytton Allen, Salisbury; sisters Kathryn Yarbro and Janie Wise,
both of Salisbury; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and six
great-grandchildren.

James Pharr
James Pharr, a Salisbury native, died Tuesday
(Oct. 17, 2000).
A son of Adolphus and Fannie Pharr, Mr. Pharr
attended Price High School and Livingstone College. He attended Moore’s Chapel
AMEZion Church.
He moved to Washington, D.C., in July 1940, where
he met his wife of over 60 years, Lillian Washington. The couple were married
Nov. 2, 1940.
He was a member of Metropolitan AMEZion Church
since 1940. During World War II, he briefly worked at the Pentagon. He later
went into real estate and was a salesman with Joseph H. Green Real Estate Co. He
established and operated James Pharr Realty for over 40 years.
He was a member of the First Team Sports Club. He
and his wife traveled extensively.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include
daughter Cecilia Pharr, Cleveland, Ohio; sons James Pharr Jr., Henderson, Nev.,
and Kofi Asiedu Ofori; brothers Adolphus Pharr, Brandywine, Md., the Rev. David
Pharr, New York; sister Louise Simpson, Salisbury, N.C.; two grandsons; and
three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Oct. 23 at
Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Washington, D.C.
Micheal G. Purdy
AVON, Ind. — Micheal G. Purdy, 53, a former
Rowan County, N.C., resident, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000)at his home from
cancer.
Born Jan. 16, 1947, in Anderson, Mr. Purdy was
the son of Kathleen Hastings and Jack Purdy, both of Anderson. He attended
Madison Heights and Anderson high schools.
He joined the Army and served with the 82nd
Airborne Division during the Vietnam War. After returning from the Army, he
moved to North Carolina, where he became a plumber, starting his own business.
He later returned to Indiana.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
wife Bridget Purdy; daughter Treva Purdy, North Carolina; stepson David Cox;
brother Steven Purdy; and two granddaughters.
Services: Private memorial services were held on
Oct. 24 at the VFW Post in Anderson.
Private memorial services will be held 7 p.m.
Friday at Rowan Christian Church, Salisbury, N.C.

Roberson, 79, 415 Long Ferry Road, who died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000)at Lexington
Memorial Hospital, Lexington, after five days of serious illness.

Roberson, Chicago, Ill., who was reared in the home.

W. Samuel Truette Jr.
ALBEMARLE — The funeral was held Tuesday for
W.Samuel Truette Jr., 86, Albemarle, who died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000)at Stanly
Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 6, 1914, in Darlington, S.C., Mr.
Truette was a son of the late W. Samuel and Hessie Reeder Truette. He was a
graduate of Asheville High School and North Carolina State University.
A chemist, he worked with Scholler Brothers. He
served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the European Theatre.
His first wife, Bernice Deane Truette, died in
1969. His second wife, Nora Smith Truette, died in 1995.
Survivors include wife Viola Baker Truette; son
W. Samuel Truette III, Baltimore, Md.; and three grandchildren.
Services were held Oct. 24 at Fairview Memorial
Park. The Rev. Ben Wilson officiated.
The family received friends prior to the services
at Hartsell Funeral Home.

ROCKWELL — The funeral is today for Nellie
McMaster Walker, 73, who died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) at Brian Center Health and
Rehabilitation.
Born Oct. 23, 1926, in Seth W. Va., she was a
daughter of the late Gus I. and Syble Bush McMaster. Educated in the Holly,
Mich., schools, she was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Survivors include husband B. D. “Whitey”
Walker, whom she married March 4, 1946; sons Scott Walker, Phoenix, Ariz., and
Shawn Walker, Zellwood, Fla.; daughter Connie Mullen and Sharon Comstock, both
of Rockwell; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
