The PGA Tour Qualifying School’s first stage tourney started at Kannapolis Country Club this morning, but one local golfer was not in the field.

Kannapolis’ Brian Chapman had originally entered, but the former South Rowan High School golfer decided last week he would not play.He officially withdrew on Monday.

“I changed instructors like a month ago. We have been working on some new things. I just don’t feel comfortable enough with it yet,” said the 27-year-old Chapman.

His new instructor is Scott Davenport of Quail Hollow Country Club in Charlotte. Davenport came to Charlotte from Sea Island, Ga.

“I’m changing some swing mechanics. It’s been kind of tough adjusting. I thought maybe I could be ready.I decided at the end of the week it would probably be best if I didn’t play,” he explained.

“It’s something I think is positive and is going to be really good,” he said of the changes being made in his swing. “I have full faith and confidence in the changes and my instructor. I’m just going to go from there, work on it and get ready for next year.”

Chapman played in some TearDrop and Hooters events during the spring and summer, then decided to start working with Davenport.

Approximately 76 golfers, including Salisbury’s Elliot Gealy, are playing today through Friday at Kannapolis, with approximately 25 percent of the field advancing to the second stage.
