Robert East
LEXINGTON — Robert East, 43, 112 Cherokee
Drive, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) in Winston-Salem.
Born Dec. 26, 1956, in Davidson County, he was a
son of Hoyle Everhart, California, and Jan E.Glover, High Point. He was an
employee of Finishmaster of Charlotte and a member of First United Methodist
Church.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include
wife Kimberly W. East; son John Robert East II, of the home; daughter Kelly
Suzanne East, of the home; and sister Melynda E. Crawford, Southport.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, First United
Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. John Ferree, Dr. J. Hurley Thomas III,
and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home,
and 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parlor of First United Methodist Church. At
other times the family will be at the home.

Roy Homes Clayton
ALBEMARLE — Roy Homes “Cookie” Clayton, 80,
2210 Highway 52, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) at Stanly Manor Nursing Center.
Born June 1, 1920 in Stanly County, he was a son
of the late George Alexander and Sally Parker Clayton. A retired employee of
Alliance Electric Co., he was a member of Prospect Baptist Church. He was a U.S.
Army veteran of World War II and a former chief of Bethany Volunteer Fire
Department.
Survivors include wife Margaret Varner Clayton,
Stanly Manor Nursing Center; son Roy D. Clayton, New London; brother Max
Clayton, Albemarle; and one grandchild.
Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Stanly
Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Josey. Burial at a later date.
Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral

William Eli Jackson
LOUISBURG — William Eli Jackson, 87, Louisburg,
formerly of Spencer, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) at Franklin Regional Medical
Center.
He was a Spencer resident for more than 50 years.
Survivors include wife Thelma M. Jackson,
Spencer; daughters Jean Smith, Louisburg, and Nancy Kaye, Kannapolis; sister
Thelma Luther, Asheboro, and Ruby Page, Salisbury; brothers David Jackson,
Denton, Louie Jackson, Salisbury, Manteo Jackson, Jacksonville, Fla., and Ralph
Jackson, Gold Hill; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Lancaster
Funeral Home Chapel.

Elease Kiser
Elease Kiser, 87, 507 Second St., East Spencer,
died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) at Spencer Nursing Center after a serious illness of
one day.
Born Sept. 2, 1913, in Richland County, S.C.,
Mrs. Kiser was the daughter of the late Mary Wages and Jessie Kennedy. She was
educated in the public schools of Rowan County and retired from Fieldcrest
Cannon.
A member of Southern City AMEZion Church, she was
a deaconess, a member of the Spiritual Choir, pastor’s aide, stewardess board
and parent body. A missionary, she was a former member of the Court of Calanthe,
Second Street Community Club and Eastwind Nutrition Site.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell
Kiser, and sons Odell Kiser Jr. and George Kiser, and daughter Vona Lee Kennedy.
Survivors include sons Charles E. Kiser,
Salisbury, and James Kiser, of the home; daughters Essie K. Foxx, East Spencer,
Irene K. Bates, Salisbury, Mary K. Hasty, Detroit, Mich., Catherine K. Bradley,
Philadelphia, Pa., Brenda K. Kelly, Murray, Ohio, Geraldine K. Mitchell, East
Spencer; and Rosalind K. Kesler, Salisbury; brother Jessie Kennedy Jr.,
Philadelphia, Pa.; 39 grandchildren, 72 great-grandchildren and three
great-great grandchildren.

Church, East Spencer, the Rev. Rollins Graham officiating. Burial,Oakwood

Eva Ellis Mayberry
NORWALK, Conn. — Eva Ellis Mayberry, 88, 2
Quaker Road, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Norwalk Hospital after a brief
illness.
Born July 11, 1912, in Rowan County, N.C., Mrs.
Mayberry was a daughter of the late John A. and Alie Chambers Ellis. She was
educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace
Baptist Church, where she served on the Lady’s Society.
Her husband, Jay Henry Mayberry, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include daughter Frances Mayberry
Evans, of the home; brothers Johnnie and Charles Ellis and John A. Ellis Jr.,
all of Cleveland, N.C., James Ellis, Woodleaf, N.C., Raymond Ellis, Granite
Quarry, N.C., and Walter Ellis, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; sisters Katheleen Sifford,
Brooklyn, N.Y., Hattie Rankins, New York, N.Y., Lucille Moore, Bronx, N.Y., and
Geneva Vaughters and Virginia Cuthbertson, both of Woodleaf, N.C.; four
grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Services: 12 p.m. Thursday, Grace Baptist Church.
The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.
Visitation: 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Thursday at the
church.

Thomas M. Ramsey
STATESVILLE — Thomas M. Ramsey, Statesville,
died Tuesday (Oct. 17, 2000) at Gilchrist Medical Center, Baltimore, Md.
Born Dec. 10, 1940, in Salisbury, Mr. Ramsey was
a son of the late William H.L. and Ollie Fisher Ramsey. He was reared in
Cleveland and joined Knox Grove Baptist Church, Cleveland, at an early age.
Educated in Rowan County schools, he graduated
from R.A. Clement High School, Cleveland. He received a bachelor of science
degree in social welfare from Livingstone College, where he was inducted into
the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
He moved to Baltimore, Md., and was a member of
Morning Star Baptist Church, Catonsville, Md. He was a member of the deacon
ministry and later was chairperson of the ministry.
At one time, Mr. Ramsey was employed by Grinnell
Fire Protection Co., but he recently retired from Baltimore County Bureau of
Corrections.
Survivors include wife of 38 years Roberta M.
Ramsey, whom he married April 19, 1961; children Quintin LeMonte Ramsey, Steven
Douglas Ramsey and Rubetta T. Towles; sisters Mary F. Howard, Cleveland, and
Margaret McClelland, Statesville; brothers Barney Ramsey, Huntersville, Charles
E. Ramsey, Salisbury, and James T. Ramsey, Statesville; and 10 grandchildren.
Services were held Saturday, Oct. 21 at Morning
Star Baptist Church, Catonsville, Md. Burial followed in Baltimore, Md.
Margaret Feimster Shell
Margaret Feimster Shell, 86, formerly of 665
Brown Road, China Grove, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) at The Laurels of
Salisbury.
Born March 10, 1913, in Iredell County, Mrs.
Shell was a daughter of the late Ella Lavina Massey and William Rufus Feimster.
Educated in the Iredell County schools, she was a
homemaker and a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.
Her husband, William Spurgeon Shell, died in
1956.
Survivors include sons Michael and John Shell,
both of China Grove; daughters Virginia Barton, Salisbury, Frances Overcash,
Landis, Elizabeth “Lib” Long, Faith, and Jeanette Shell, China Grove;
brother Clyde Feimster, Landis; 16 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

Terry Wayne Thompson
Terry Wayne Thompson, 43, Salisbury, died Monday
(Oct. 23, 2000) at his home, after five years of declining health.
Born Dec. 9, 1956, in Rowan County, Mr. Thompson
was a son of Elizabeth Pepper Blackman and Robert A. Thompson, both of
Salisbury.
Mr. Thompson attended North Mecklenburg High
School, Charlotte. He was a trailer mechanic with Fredrickson Motor Freight Co.,
Charlotte.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of
Good Shepherd’s Ministry, Concord.
Survivors include wife Stacy Styers Thompson,
whom he married Sept. 3, 1994; son Brandon Colt Thompson, Wadesboro,
sistersBobbie Jo Strider, Davidson; Rickie McAuley, Huntersville; Wanda
Williams, Mooresville; Trena Thompson, Daytona Beach, Fla.; and Arlica Thompson,
Winston-Salem.

Elva Mae Smith Cornette
The funeral will be Wednesday for Elva Mae Smith
Cornette, Effingham, Ill., who died Sunday, (Oct. 22, 2000) at Lakeland Nursing
Home, Effingham. She had been in declining health for two years.
Born Sept. 13, 1928, in Johnson City, Tenn., she
was the daughter of the late Harry and Roberta Osborne Smith. Educated in the
schools of Johnson City, Tenn., she was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Her husband, Bill Cornette, preceded her in
death.
Survivors include son Jody Pellegrino, Chicago;
daughters Bridgette Cornette and Candy Pellegrino, Chicago, and Patricia Althoff,
Edgewood, Ill.; brother James Edward Smith, Greensboro; sisters Gay Marie
Edwards, Cleveland, and Carolyn Katherine Edwards, Mount Ulla; seven
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Lakeina Monique Francis
WOODLEAF — Lakeina Monique Francis, 19, 5430
Foster Road, died Oct. 12, 2000, on the USS Cole in Yemen.
Born in Philadelphia, Pa., Miss Francis was the
daughter of Ronald W. and Sandra S. Francis.
She had lived with her family in several states
where her father, a Naval officer, was assigned. In school, Miss Williams was a
member of the 4-H Club and worked with AIDS Crisis while living in California.
She had served five months with the U.S. Navy and
was a mess manager specialist on the USS Cole.
In addition to her parents, survivors include
brothers James Winston Francis II and David Charles Francis, both of the home;
and maternal grandparents Charles and Bertha Shivers, Philadelphia.
Her body will be brought to Graham Funeral Home,
Mocksville, later this week.
Opal Hunsucker
TROY — Opal Sills Hunsucker, 76, Westwood
Apartments, died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle,
after an illness of three weeks.
Born Aug. 22, 1924, in Davidson County, Mrs.
Hunsucker was a daughter of the late William Grady Sill and Lillian Poole Sills.
She was a homemaker and worked at City Laundry in
Troy. She attended Liberty Hill Baptist Church.
Her husband, Johnny Hunsucker, died in December
1980.
She has no immediate survivors.

CHINA GROVE — Gertrude S. Roseman, 77, 285
Providence St., died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord, after a month of declining health.
Born June 23, 1923, in Lancaster County, S.C.,
Mrs. Roseman was a daughter of the late William Franklin and Mary Etta Horton
Stroude.
She was a homemaker and member of First United
Methodist Church, Landis.
Her husband, Leroy Roseman, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons Albert Evans, Concord,
Timothy Evans, Asheboro, Nolan Lane Evans, Long Beach, Calif., and Gary and
Steve Evans, both of Kannapolis; sisters Hattie Schenk, China Grove, and Edna
Bost, Rockwell; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

LEXINGTON — Danny Thomas Williams, 39, 107
Jessup St., died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000).
Born April 19, 1961, in New Hanover County, Mr.
Williams was a son of Alice Faye Batten Blackwell, East Spencer, and the late
Linwood Chester Williams.
He was self-employed and of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include stepfather David Blackwell,
East Spencer; step-grandmother Elizabeth Trexler, East Spencer; brother George
Gordon Jr., Georgia; and sister Wilma Frances Mason.

Charles Edward Woodson
The funeral will be Wednesday for Charles Edward
Woodson, 47, 410 W. 15th St., Apt. 29-J, Salisbury, who died Thursday (Oct. 19,
2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born May 3, 1953, in Rowan County, he was the son
of the late Ezella and Annie Mae Knox Woodson. He attended Salisbury High
School.
He was employed by Cheerwine Bottling Co. and
Cone Mills. A member of Halls Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, he was president
of the Men’s Choir and a member of the RLJ Choir.
Survivors include wife Tonya Michelle Walker
