Paul Junior Brown

MOCKSVILLE — Paul Junior Brown, 66, Ridge Road, died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at Davis Medical Center, Statesville.

Born Nov. 17, 1933, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Rosa Harkey and Grover Cleveland Brown. Mr. Brown had retired from Kenwnuee Scientific Equipment after 37 years with the company.

He was preceded in death by a son, Micheal Ray Brown.

Survivors include wife Nora Lynch Brown; sons Paul Richard Brown, Mocksville, and Curtis Ray Brown, Salisbury; brothers Author Ray Brown, Cooleemee, and Bobby Lee Brown, Mocksville; sisters Emma Hendrix, Mocksville, Catherine Privette, Cooleemee, Sadie Mae Hilton, Mocksville, and Dorothy Jean Brown, South Carolina; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m., today, Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Edward Mitchum and the Rev. Steve Hedgecock. Burial, church cemetery.

Memorials: Calvary Baptist Church, Cemetery Fund, 2165 Davie Academy Road, Mocksville, NC 27028.

 

Edward Wilson Holder

KANNAPOLIS — Edward Wilson Holder, 83, 1906 Glenwood St., died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He was born Oct. 5, 1917, in Anderson, S.C., son of the late Lilly Pearl Hayes and John Belton Holder. He had formerly owned and operated several gas stations in the area. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was a member of Poston-Perkins VFW Post 8989.

Survivors include daughters Elaine H. Persing, Redman, Wash., and Donna H. Miller, Rockwell; son Wayne Holder, Catawba; brother Robert L. Holder, Kannapolis; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Service: 2 p.m., Sunday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Ted Davis and the Rev. Newell Anderson. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m., Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Donna Miller, 5575 Phaniels Church-Rimertown Road, Rockwell.

Marion Hudson Hoyle

COOLEEMEE — Marion Hudson Hoyle, Jr., 81, Ruffin Street, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Born Jan. 20, 1919, in Davie County, he was the son of the late Margaret Efird and Marion Hudson Hoyle. An electrical engineer, he was a member of Cooleemee United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Marjorie Reavis Hoyle, Winston-Salem; daughters Janet Towell, Turlock, Calif., and Tina Roten, Matthews; and four grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Cooleemee United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Marshall and the Rev. Joe Collins.

Visitation: 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at the church.

Arthur ‘Art’ Kramer

Arthur “Art” Kramer, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lyerly Funeral is in charge.

 

Gerald Clarence Loftis

CHINA GROVE — Gerald Clarence Loftis, 39, 145 Darlington Drive, died Thursday (Oct. 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 14, 1960, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Reid “Sonny” Loftis and Carolyn Little Raffie. He was employed in the maintenance department of Pillowtex’s waste treatment plant.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Betty Elizabeth “Libby” Loftis; daughter Karen Marie Loftis, of the home; son Gerald “C.J.” Clarence Loftis Jr., of the home; sisters Angie Wendorf, Kannapolis, and Tina Sherrill, Statesville; and brother Danny Loftis, Concord.

Services: 3:30 p.m., Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

 

Doris Coley Mason

ALBEMARLE — Doris Coley Mason, 62, 802 Hill St., died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 6, 1937, in Gaston County, daughter of the late Rachel Beatrice Burleson and Glendon Lee Coley. Retired as a sheller for Morning Glory Egg Plant, she was a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband David Mason; sons Kendall, Tommy and Dwayne Russell, all of Albemarle; daughters Norma Passmore, Asheboro, and Roxie Russell, Albemarle; brothers Bob Coley, Clover, S.C., and Horace Coley, Albemarle; and six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m., Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Les Schofield. Burial, Canton Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle.

 

‘Bob’ Richardson

Robert “Bob” Whitt Richardson, 72, Salisbury, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born June 7, 1928, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Hattie Hunsucker and John C. Richardson. A graduate of Spencer High School, he was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He had retired as a telecommunicator with the N.C. Highway Patrol. After retirement, he worked security at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

Mr. Richardson attended Franklin Baptist Church. He was a member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion Post, the 40 and 8, the Rowan County Veterans Council’s military funeral detail and Spencer Moose Lodge.

Mr. Richardson had been inducted into the Rowan County American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. He did volunteer work at the Hefner VA Medical Center.

Survivors include wife Phyllis Branham Richardson, whom he married Oct. 1, 1954; son Robert Brian Richardson, Monroe; daughters Lori Suzanne Richardson, Concord, and Kim Renee Whitley, Kannapolis; brother John C. Richardson Jr., Georgetown, Ky.; sister Betta Lou Campbell, Atlanta; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Franklin Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Larry Twitty, pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the famiy will be at the residence.

Ellen Allan Sain

MOCKSVILLE — Ellen Allan Sain, 65, Milling Road, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.

Born May 27, 1935, she was the daughter of the late Flora Phelps and Wesley C. Allan. A 1953 graduate of Mocksville High School, she was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Sain was a past president and teasurer of the Davie County Hospital Auxiliary. Retired from BB&T after 20 years’ service, she was a part-time tour guide with Wayne Mullis Travel, Salisbury.

Survivors include her husband of 46 years, Howard Sain; son Jim Sain, Mocksville; daughter LuAnn S. Jordan, Melbourne, Fla.; sisters Edna Long, Winston-Salem, Elizabeth Teague, Clemmons, and Estelle Smith, Mocksville; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m., Sunday, Bethel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. S.B. Warner. Burial, church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. There will be no visitation.

‘Bob’ H. Smith

CONCORD — Robert “Bob” H. Smith, 68, 34 Rollingwood Drive, died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at his home.

Mr. Smith was born May 25, 1932, in Kannapolis, the son of the late Lawrence Boyd Smith and Pearl Virginia Goodnight Smith. A graduate of Odell High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an elder and clerk of the session. Active in Boy Scouts for more than 35 years, he was a member of the Scout Advisory Board for Troop 38.

Mr. Smith had retired from a lifetime of work in the sale of auto parts. A dedicated Red Cross donor in both Cabarrus and Mecklenburg counties, he had given more than 42 gallons.

Survivors include wife Shirley Johnston Smith; sons Mike and Wesley Smith, both of Kannapolis, Pat Smith, Salisbury, and Kevin and Eric Smith, both of Concord; daughter Kim Smith Gibson, Kannapolis, brother Donald Smith, Kannapolis; and 15 grandchildren.

Service: 3 p.m., Sunday, Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church.

Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. today, Wilkinson’s Funeral Home.

H.W. ‘Roe’ Vaughn

KANNAPOLIS — H.W. “Roe” Vaughn, 81, 415 S. Enochville Ave., died Friday (Oct. 20, 2000) at his home.

Born March 29, 1919, in Rowan County, he was the son of the late Weldon and Janie Harrison Vaughn. He had retired from Cannon Mills, bleachery department.

He was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and a former member of the Enochville Lions Club. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served as an amphibious engineer in the South Pacific.

Survivors include wife Annie Goodnight Vaughn, whom he married July 1, 1943; and sisters Taveline Beachman and Irene Meng, both of Salisbury.

Service: 2 p.m., Sunday, St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. Paul Pickler. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. today, Whitley’s Funeral Home.
