William ‘Bill’ Abernethy

KANNAPOLIS —William Adrian “Bill” Abernethy, 71, 1103 Mountain St., died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Brian Health Center, Salisbury, after a year of declining health.

Born Feb. 26, 1929, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Abernethy was a son of the late Joseph Reid and Margaret Allea Crowell Abernethy. Employed with the Mecklenburg CountyPolice Department for 14 years, he was also involved many years with the North Carolina chemical test for alcohol and served as program manager for the training program in Raleigh until his retirement in 1983.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and its Paul Barrier Sunday School Class; and the Southern Police Alumni Association, Louisville, Ky. He was also a member emeritus of the National Safety Council’s Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs; a former member of the N.C. Police Executives Association; a former member of the N.C. Committee on Chemical Tests for Alcohol; an associate member of the N.C. Sheriff’s Association; and a lifetime member of the Mecklenburg County Police Officers Association.

He graduated from Oakhurst High School in Mecklenburg County in 1947 and obtained a business degree from Central Piedmont Community College. He graduated in 1962 from the Southern Police Institute, which was then a part of the University of Louisville. He also received an associate degree from Durham Technical Institute in 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Joan Chapman Abernethy; sons William Adrian Abernethy Jr., Matthews, and Thomas Brewer Abernethy, Cary; daughters Laurie Abernethy Craver, Kannapolis, Kathy Griffin Shockley, Rockwell, and Rebecca Griffin Honeycutt, Kannapolis; brothers Joseph R. Abernethy Jr., Charlotte, Harrison L. Abernethy, Ocean Isle Beach, Melvin C. Abernethy, Fort Mill, S.C., H.Gene Abernethy, Mooresville, Charles Abernethy, Charlotte, R. Leroy Abernethy, Charleston, S.C., and Earl D. Abernethy, Indian Trail; sisters Evelyn A. Robinette, Pawley’s Island, S.C., Ruth Gullick, Victoria, Texas, and Sara A. Meissner, Mountainside, N.J.; three granddaughters; and two step-grandsons.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Trinity United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev.Don Shuman and the Rev. Pat Purdy. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Ned Baucom

KANNAPOLIS— Alfred Ned Baucom, 86, 1404 Brantley Road, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at NorthEast MedicalCenter, Concord.

Born March 30, 1914, in Union County, Mr. Baucom was a son of the late Alfred Lee and Blanche Davis Baucom. He had retired several years ago as a foreman in the research and development department of Cannon Mills, where he had worked for 43 years.

A graduate of Marshville High School in Union County, he was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where he was a member of the board of deacons and secretary of the adult Sunday school department. He also sang in the choir.

Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Nance Baucom, whom he married Oct. 27, 1934; sons Rex Alfred Baucom, Kannapolis, and Mitchell Wayne “Mickey” Baucom, Davidson; sister Edna Williams, Monroe; brothers Keith Baucom and Heath Baucom, both of Olive Branch; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, Franklin Heights Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tim Jernigan. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of son, Rex Baucom, 2129 Bertha St.

Jon Irvin Cauble

John Irvin Cauble, 67, Salisbury, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at his home.

Born March 21, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr.Cauble was a son of the late Charlie Franklin and Vertie Ribelin Cauble. Educated at Granite Quarry High School, he was a truck driver for Akers Truck Line and Ryder Truck Line.

Former owner and operator of the Blue Goose Bar and Grill, he was a member of Union Lutheran Church and a former member of the Spencer Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, whom he married Jan. 2, 1955, Essie “Louise” McDaniel Cauble; son John Irvin Cauble Jr., Salisbury; daughters Tilda Louise Barnes, Eden, and Shelia Diane Wyatt and Selina Jane Cauble, both of Salisbury; foster son Ronnie McDaniel, Rockwell; foster daughter, Donna Flowers, Goldsboro; brothers Vernon Cauble, Raymond Cauble, Arnold Cauble, Jake Cauble and Gene Cauble, all of Salisbury; sisters Melvarine Stogner and Willie Boger, both of Salisbury, Edith Drye, Rockwell, Zara Plyler, Salisbury, and Ruth Driver, Rockwell; and four grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Union Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor, and the Rev. Bruce Sheets, pastor, Immanuel Lutheran Church. Burial, Union Lutheran Church cemetery.

Clee Allen ‘Buck’ Davis

Clee Allen “Buck” Davis, 63, 526 Boundary St., died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born March 24, 1937, in Union County, Mr. Davis was a son of the late Cleophus Davis and Dora Mills Davis, East Spencer. A graduate of Dunbar High School, he was employed at the VA Medical Center.

He was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the male chorus at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Davis was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife Jacqueline Davis Davis; son Clee Allen Davis Jr., of the home; foster daughter Demeris Davis, of the home; brother Arthur Davis, Miami, Fla.; sisters Mary Corpening, East Spencer, Ethel Eldridge, Randallstown, Md., and Edna Thomas, Co-op City, N.Y.; and one foster-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Shady Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston, pastor. Burial, Wednesday, 10 a.m., Salisbury National Cemetery, with military rites by the Veterans Service Council.

Visitation: 2:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, at the church.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Sue C. Early

LEXINGTON — Nellie Sue Crawford Early, 72, formerly of Denton, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Broughton Hospital, Morganton.

Born April 26, 1928 in Dorchester, S.C., Mrs. Early was a daughter of the late George William and Nellie Mae Murray Crawford. She had retired and did volunteer work at the Salvation Army.

Survivors include son James W. Early, Copperas, Texas; daughter Carol Ann Blalock, Rockwell, and Dorothy Byrd, Merritt Island, Fla.; half brothers George William Crawford and Ellis Pickney Crawford, both of Bamberg, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. today, Forest Hill Memorial Park Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Akers.

Leona Barnette Hefner

HICKORY — Leona Barnette Hefner, 89, Springs Road, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Frye Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.

She was the mother of Gerald L. Hefner, Kannapolis.

Services: 3 p.m., Monday, St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, conducted by the Rev. David Guelzow. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 4 p.m. Monday, at the church.

Dr. ‘Mack’ Henderson

MOORESVILLE — Dr. Andrew McKnitt “Mack” Henderson, 80, Mooresville, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 21, 1920, in Mooresville, Dr. Henderson was a son of the late Andrew McKnitt and Pearl Rutledge Henderson. He was a graduate of Lees-McRae College, Appalachian State Teachers College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.

He practiced medicine in Mooresville for 40 years and was a member of the N.C. Medical Society for 50 years. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he participated in the Normandy invasion.

He was a friend of Hopewell Presbyterian Church and a member of the Men’s Bible Class at First Presbyterian Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Adcock Henderson.

Survivors include daughters Margaret Anne H. Jorgensen, San Francisco, Nancy H. Whitlatch, Lewisville, Rebekah H. Megerian, Asheboro, and Sarah Delia Henderson, Mooresville; son Andrew M. Henderson III, Oriental; and six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. S. Edwin Lewis, the Rev. Dr. Fred A. Coates and the Rev. Jeff Lowrance. Burial, Hopewell Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Huntersville.

James William Morgan

ALBEMARLE — James William Morgan, 79, 433 E.Cannon Ave., died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at the Lutheran Home.

Born Oct. 8, 1921, in Stanly County, Mr. Morgan was the son of the late Thaxter Finch and Grace Efird Morgan. A graduate of the Albemarle schools and N.C. State University, he was formerly district manager for the Charlotte branch of Pepsi-Cola. He was a former part owner of Albemarle Honda.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the occupational forces in Germany and attained the rank of first lieutenant.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Beaver Morgan, of the Lutheran Home; son Bill Morgan, Jamestown; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Futterer. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Gile E. Mullis

KANNAPOLIS — Gile Edward Mullis, 74, 310 N. Enochville Ave., died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury.

Born April 9, 1926, in Union County, Mr. Mullis was a son of the late Floyd and Lois Purser Mullis. A self-employed well driller, he had formerly worked for Cannon Mills. He was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church.

A veteran of the U.S. Army’s Airborne Division, he was a member of Post-Perkins VFW Post 8989 of Kannapolis.

His first wife, Colene Benton Mullis, died Sept. 23, 1970. A stepdaughter, Robin Lakey, and a stepson, Dwight Joplin, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Audrey Wilcox Mullis; sons Reid Edward Mullis, Mark K. Benton and Vic Alan Mullis, all of Kannapolis, and Edwin Lee Mullis, of the home; stepdaughter Selena Williams, Salisbury; sisters Geraldine Snowden and Marie Walker, both of Salisbury; and 10 grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Lady’s Funeral Home.

Pete Pickett Jr.

SOUTHMONT — Pete Pickett Jr., 49, Linwood-Southmont Road, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) as the result of a motorcycle accident in Winston-Salem.

Mr. Pickett was employed by Owens Brockway Glass Containers Division of Owens-Illinois Inc.

The family will be at the home of his mother, Mary Pickett, on Linwood-Southmont Road.

CHINAGROVE — Oney “Tot” Weaver, 101, 155 Kimball Road, died Saturday(Oct. 14, 2000) at RowanRegional Medical Center, Salisbury.
