William ‘Bill’ Abernethy
KANNAPOLIS —William Adrian “Bill”
Abernethy, 71, 1103 Mountain St., died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Brian Health
Center, Salisbury, after a year of declining health.
Born Feb. 26, 1929, in Mecklenburg County, Mr.
Abernethy was a son of the late Joseph Reid and Margaret Allea Crowell
Abernethy. Employed with the Mecklenburg CountyPolice Department for 14 years,
he was also involved many years with the North Carolina chemical test for
alcohol and served as program manager for the training program in Raleigh until
his retirement in 1983.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist
Church and its Paul Barrier Sunday School Class; and the Southern Police Alumni
Association, Louisville, Ky. He was also a member emeritus of the National
Safety Council’s Committee on Alcohol and Other Drugs; a former member of the
N.C. Police Executives Association; a former member of the N.C. Committee on
Chemical Tests for Alcohol; an associate member of the N.C. Sheriff’s
Association; and a lifetime member of the Mecklenburg County Police Officers
Association.
He graduated from Oakhurst High School in
Mecklenburg County in 1947 and obtained a business degree from Central Piedmont
Community College. He graduated in 1962 from the Southern Police Institute,
which was then a part of the University of Louisville. He also received an
associate degree from Durham Technical Institute in 1978.

Ned Baucom
KANNAPOLIS— Alfred Ned Baucom, 86, 1404
Brantley Road, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at NorthEast MedicalCenter,
Concord.
Born March 30, 1914, in Union County, Mr. Baucom
was a son of the late Alfred Lee and Blanche Davis Baucom. He had retired
several years ago as a foreman in the research and development department of
Cannon Mills, where he had worked for 43 years.
A graduate of Marshville High School in Union
County, he was a member of Franklin Heights Baptist Church, where he was a
member of the board of deacons and secretary of the adult Sunday school
department. He also sang in the choir.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Nance Baucom,
whom he married Oct. 27, 1934; sons Rex Alfred Baucom, Kannapolis, and Mitchell
Wayne “Mickey” Baucom, Davidson; sister Edna Williams, Monroe; brothers
Keith Baucom and Heath Baucom, both of Olive Branch; two grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren.

Jon Irvin Cauble
John Irvin Cauble, 67, Salisbury, died Saturday
(Oct. 14, 2000) at his home.
Born March 21, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr.Cauble
was a son of the late Charlie Franklin and Vertie Ribelin Cauble. Educated at
Granite Quarry High School, he was a truck driver for Akers Truck Line and Ryder
Truck Line.
Former owner and operator of the Blue Goose Bar
and Grill, he was a member of Union Lutheran Church and a former member of the
Spencer Moose Lodge.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married Jan.
2, 1955, Essie “Louise” McDaniel Cauble; son John Irvin Cauble Jr.,
Salisbury; daughters Tilda Louise Barnes, Eden, and Shelia Diane Wyatt and
Selina Jane Cauble, both of Salisbury; foster son Ronnie McDaniel, Rockwell;

Clee Allen ‘Buck’ Davis
Clee Allen “Buck” Davis, 63, 526 Boundary
St., died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical
Center, Winston-Salem.
Born March 24, 1937, in Union County, Mr. Davis
was a son of the late Cleophus Davis and Dora Mills Davis, East Spencer. A
graduate of Dunbar High School, he was employed at the VA Medical Center.
He was a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and a
member of the male chorus at Shady Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Davis was a veteran
of the U.S. Navy.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his
wife Jacqueline Davis Davis; son Clee Allen Davis Jr., of the home; foster
daughter Demeris Davis, of the home; brother Arthur Davis, Miami, Fla.; sisters
Mary Corpening, East Spencer, Ethel Eldridge, Randallstown, Md., and Edna
Thomas, Co-op City, N.Y.; and one foster-grandchild.

LEXINGTON — Nellie Sue Crawford Early, 72,
formerly of Denton, died Saturday (Oct. 14, 2000) at Broughton Hospital,
Morganton.
Born April 26, 1928 in Dorchester, S.C., Mrs.
Early was a daughter of the late George William and Nellie Mae Murray Crawford.
She had retired and did volunteer work at the Salvation Army.
Survivors include son James W. Early, Copperas,
Texas; daughter Carol Ann Blalock, Rockwell, and Dorothy Byrd, Merritt Island,
Fla.; half brothers George William Crawford and Ellis Pickney Crawford, both of
Bamberg, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. ‘Mack’ Henderson
MOORESVILLE — Dr. Andrew McKnitt “Mack”
Henderson, 80, Mooresville, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional
Medical Center.
Born Aug. 21, 1920, in Mooresville, Dr. Henderson
was a son of the late Andrew McKnitt and Pearl Rutledge Henderson. He was a
graduate of Lees-McRae College, Appalachian State Teachers College and Bowman
Gray School of Medicine.
He practiced medicine in Mooresville for 40 years
and was a member of the N.C. Medical Society for 50 years. A World War II
veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps, he participated in the Normandy invasion.
He was a friend of Hopewell Presbyterian Church
and a member of the Men’s Bible Class at First Presbyterian Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret
Adcock Henderson.
Survivors include daughters Margaret Anne H.
Jorgensen, San Francisco, Nancy H. Whitlatch, Lewisville, Rebekah H. Megerian,
Asheboro, and Sarah Delia Henderson, Mooresville; son Andrew M. Henderson III,

James William Morgan
ALBEMARLE — James William Morgan, 79, 433
E.Cannon Ave., died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at the Lutheran Home.
Born Oct. 8, 1921, in Stanly County, Mr. Morgan
was the son of the late Thaxter Finch and Grace Efird Morgan. A graduate of the
Albemarle schools and N.C. State University, he was formerly district manager
for the Charlotte branch of Pepsi-Cola. He was a former part owner of Albemarle
Honda.
A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he
served with the occupational forces in Germany and attained the rank of first
lieutenant.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Beaver

grandchildren.

Gile E. Mullis
KANNAPOLIS — Gile Edward Mullis, 74, 310 N.
Enochville Ave., died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury.
Born April 9, 1926, in Union County, Mr. Mullis
was a son of the late Floyd and Lois Purser Mullis. A self-employed well
driller, he had formerly worked for Cannon Mills. He was a member of Bethpage
United Methodist Church.
A veteran of the U.S. Army’s Airborne Division,
he was a member of Post-Perkins VFW Post 8989 of Kannapolis.
His first wife, Colene Benton Mullis, died Sept.
23, 1970. A stepdaughter, Robin Lakey, and a stepson, Dwight Joplin, also
preceded him in death.
