William Adrian Abernethy

KANNAPOLIS — William “Bill”Adrian Abernethy, 71, Kannapolis, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000)at the Brian Center, Salisbury.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

William Douglas Austin

OAKBORO — William Douglas Austin, 50, 28401 Barbees Grove Road, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at his residence.

Born March 19, 1950, in Stanly County, Mr. Austin was a son of the late Grace Lee Little and Clinton David “Pete” Austin. A 1968 graduate of West Stanly High School, he was a machinist with Stanly Fixture Co.

Mr. Austin is survived by a sister, Wanda Nichols, Oakboro.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by Ervin Hatley. Burial, Smith’s Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be a the home of his sister at 28393 Barbees Grove Road.

 

Rachel Kimmer Connell

ALBEMARLE — Rachel Kimmer Connell, 76, 2204 E. Main St., died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000)at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 23, 1924, in Stanly County, Mrs. Connell was a daughter of the late William C. and Josie Mathew Kimmer. Retired from Safeway Super Market after 14 years with the company, she was a member of Anderson Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Everette Jesse Connell; son William E. Connell, Albemarle; daughters Carol C. Allen and Joyce Gaye Weaver, both of Albemarle; sisters Jean Cooke and Brenda James, both of Albemarle; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Anderson Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ron Huneycutt. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Stanly Funeral Home. The body will be taken to the church at 6:30 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home on East Main Street.

Willard D. Fields

KANNAPOLIS — Willard D. Fields, 68, 5316 Winston St., died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000)at his residence after four years of declining health and four months of serious illness.

Born May 12, 1932, in Cleveland County, Mr. Fields was a son of the late Stella Moser and Grady Fields. He was employed for many years with Cannon Mills, Plant 1, maintenance department. Later he worked for Duke Power Co., also in maintenance, for 20 years until his retirement in 1991. Mr. Fields was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include wife Barbara Weaver Fields; daughters Perriann Abernathy, Landis, and Deena Small, Concord; son Todd Fields, Kannapolis; sister Grace Wise, Salisbury; brother Perry Fields, Bolivia, N.C.; and eight grandchildren.

Services:4 p.m. today, Bethpage Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steven Mowery and Zane Corriher. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 3-4 today, in the historical room at the church.

Lanie Dorcus Hall

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Sunday for Lanie Dorcus Collins Helms Hall, 89, Kannapolis, who died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 4, 1911, in Robinson County, Mrs. Hall was a daughter of the late Stephen D. and Lucy Britt Collins. She had retired in 1981 from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, where she worked in the supply room. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Kannapolis.

Her first husband, Murry Payne Helms, died in 1969, and her second husband, William H. Hall, died in 1994. She was also preceded in death by her son, Phil Payne Helms.

Survivors include two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Bethlehem Presbyterian Church, Monroe, conducted by the Rev. Lee Zehmer. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of a grandson, Phillip Helms, 340 Homer Corriher Road, China Grove.

Robert Leonard Munday

ADVANCE — Robert Leonard Munday, 63, 2183 Cornatzer Road, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000)at his residence after two years of declining health and one week of serious illness. He had lived in Kannapolis until his retirement in 1998.

Born Oct. 15, 1936, in Alexander County, Mr. Munday was a son of Beulah Childers Munday, Kannapolis, and the late Robert Munday. He was employed with Sara Lee-Hanes Division, Winston-Salem, for 10 years before retiring. Mr. Munday was a member of Landis Baptist Church, Landis, and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Ollie Pack Munday; stepchildren Becky Ann Wood, Vicky Lynn Royall, Kenneth Wayne Wood, Wanda Gail Driver and Michael Ray Wood, all of Hamptonville; sisters Lucille Roland, Spartanburg, S.C., and JoAnn Johnson, Mocksville; brother Kenneth Munday, Kannapolis; and eight grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Arthur L. Scott

MOCKSVILLE —Arthur L. Scott, 73, 370 Cedar Creek Road, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000)at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salelm, after six years of declining health and several days of serious illness.

Born in Forsyth County, Mr. Scott was formerly employed by Cooleemee Cotton Mills, Cooleemee, and Graverly Tractor Co. He was also a farmer.

Mr. Scott was a member of Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, where he had served as trustee, deacon and treasurer. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War

Survivors include wife LillieMae Cain Scott; sons George Scott, Mocksville, Henry L. Scott, Paterson, N.J., Arthur Eugene Scott, Atlanta, and Clifton Eric Scott, Raleigh; daughters Sarah L. Scott, of the home, and Shirley Evella Crowner, Baltimore; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Cedar Creek Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Linville. Burial, church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at noon.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Monday at the church.

Gussie Mae Talbert

SPENCER — Gussie Mae Schroeder Talbert, 92, died Thursday (Oct. 12, 2000) at her residence in Spencer.

Born Nov. 3, 1907, in Abbeville, S.C., Mrs. Talbert was a daughter of the late Dolly Arizona Kemp and Johnson Valentine Schroeder. She was a 1925 graduate of Spencer High School and a 1929 graduate of the N.C. Baptist Hospital School of Nursing.

A homemaker, she had also done private duty nursing. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Spencer.

Her husband, Thomas Flake Talbert, died Jan. 11, 1992.

Survivors include son Thomas F. Talbert Jr., Charlotte; daughter Nancy T. Trexler, Charlotte; sisters Marguerite S. Cooper, Charlotte, and Sara S. Cali, Laurel, Md.; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, pastor, First Baptist Church, Spencer.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

Thelma Poplin Turrentine

MOCKSVILLE —Thelma Poplin Turrentine, 86, Cane Mill Road, died Friday (Oct. 13, 2000) at her residence.

Born Aug. 8, 1914, in Davie County, Mrs. Turrentine was a daughter of the late Lola Summers and John Poplin. She had formerly worked at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Monleigh Garment Co. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church.

Survivors include sisters Marie Chappell, Salisbury, and Kathleen Hatley, Mocksville.

Services:2 p.m. Sunday, Bethel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. S. B. Warner. Burial, church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.
