Paul Bittle Jr.

LEXINGTON— Paul Bittle Jr., 73, formerly of Hyde Street, died Wednesday (Oct. 4, 2000) in Mobile, Ala.

Born March 4, 1926, in Chesterfield, S.C., Mr. Bittle was a son of the late Dan and Frankie Bittle. Educated in the Lexington schools, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.

Mr. Bittle had retired from Mid State Tile. A member of Friendship Baptist Church, he was a Sunday school teacher, trustee and deacon.

Survivors include wife Mamie Bussey Bittle; son Robert Sullivan, Lexington; daughter Vera Bussey Demps, Daphne, Ala.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Friendship Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Henry Waiters. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation:3-4 p.m. Monday, at the church. Friends may also pay their respects today, 1-8 p.m., at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home.

 

Orville ‘Duck’ Blalock

ALBEMARLE — Orville Bascum “Duck” Blalock, 83, 39257 Duck Road, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000)at the VA Medical Center in Fayetteville.

Born May 10, 1917, in Stanly County, Mr. Blalock was a son of the late Walter and Esther Mae Kirk Blalock.

Retired from Wiscassett Mill Co., he was a member of Union Chapel United Methodist Church. A World War IIveteran of the U.S. Army, he was a former member of the DAV, the VFW and the American Legion.

Mr. Blalock was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah Maxine Aldridge Blalock.

Survivors include brothers Thomas Blalock, Portsmouth, Va., and Calvin Blalock, Shelby; and sister Mary B. Lilly, Norwood.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Union Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. R. Curran Welch, the Rev. Martha B. Welch and the Rev. David Alexander. Burial, church cemetery, with full military rites by the Stanly County DAV.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

Stanly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Reid D. Clodfelter

LEXINGTON —Reid Dupree Clodfelter, 94, 17 Cornelia Drive, formerly of Lee Smith Road, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000) at Lexington Health Care Center.

Born Aug. 11, 1906, in Davidson County, Mr. Clodfelter was a son of the late Dupree and Etta Pearl Reid Clodfelter. He was a retired tobacco salesman.

His wife, Albertine Kallenbach Clodfelter, died in 1982.

Mr. Clodfelter is survived by a nephew.

Services:Graveside, 11 a.m. Monday, Lexington City Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Michael F. Hooper.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

Bruce Benton Haney

CONCORD — Bruce Benton Haney, 89, formerly of Rockwell, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000) at St. Andrew’s Living Center.

Born Feb. 1, 1911, in Union County, Mr. Haney was a son of the lateEsther Griffin and Thomas Sidney Haney. He had retired from Cannon Mills, where he had worked for more than 40 years.

Mr. Haney was a member of Central Baptist Church, where he had formerly been active in the Andrews Sunday School Class and the senior citizens group.

His wife, Gladys Castor Haney, whom he married July 5, 1934, died Aug. 18, 1996.

Survivors include son Ted Haney, Charlotte; daughters Glenda Long and Melbia McCain, both of Concord; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Central Baptist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Curtis Parker. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis.

Harry ‘Dusty’ Honeycutt

CONCORD — Harry “Dusty”Efird Honeycutt, 67, 2531 Heidleburg Drive, formerly of Mooresville, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1924, in Iredell County, Mr. Honeycutt was a son of the late Minnie Moose and Noey Honeycutt. He had retired from Templon Mills.

Survivors include wife Louise Benfield Honeycutt; son Steve Benfield, Kannapolis; sister Noni Bakter, Mooresville; and a grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Neill Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gary Chapman and the Rev. Chuck Overcash.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

Marie Weaver Keys

SPENCER — Marie Weaver Keys, 89, Spencer, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000)at Bethamy Retirement Center.

Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

‘Sherrill’Thomas Reese

KANNAPOLIS — Shirley “Sherrill”Thomas Reese, 83, Central Avenue, died Saturday (Oct. 7, 2000)at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born May 11, 1917, in Burke County, Mr. Reese was a son of the late Thomas Wilburn and Lillie Whitener Reese. He attended First Wesleyan Church. He had retired from Cannon Mills after 45 years with the company.

His wife of more than 61 years, Louise Cadell Reese, died in 1999.

Survivors include sons Steve Reese, Denver, and Danny Reese, China Grove; daughter Anne Freeman, Landis; three grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Forbis Kivett. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his daughter.

Jeffrey Dale Smith

CHINA GROVE —Jeffrey Dale Smith, 39, 955 Patterson St., died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Nov. 19, 1960, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Smith was a son of Joyce Gheen Oshinski, of the home and J.C. Smith, Kannapolis. Currently self-employed as a master carpenter, he had worked for Lincoln Log Homes and Fleetwood Homes in the past.

A graduate of Northwest Cabarrus High School, Kannapolis, he was assistant Scoutmaster of Troops 815 and 195. He attended Lane Street Church of God, Kannapolis.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sons Mitchell Glenn and Jacob Clinton Smith; brother J.C. “Chuck” Smith, Kannapolis; and sister Sandy Gillon, Lake Norman.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Lane Street Church of God, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Wade Easom and the Rev. Steve Sexton. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Ozuetta Ruth Wagoner

KANNAPOLIS — Ozuetta Ruth Wagoner, 93, formerly of 2616 Centergrove Road, died Friday (Oct. 6, 2000)at Concord Nursing Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 28, 1907, in Collin County, Texas, Mrs. Wagoner was a daughter of the late Geneva Brinkley and Aratis P. Bone. She had retired from Cannon Mills Co.’s sheet department in 1971.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Concord, and Court Sacred Heart No. 1759 of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Her first husband, Ray A. Castor, died May 9, 1974, and her second husband, Clinton T. Wagoner, died May 15, 1990.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Centergrove Lutheran Church cemetery, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Gorney.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. Prayer service at 7 p.m.

Memorials:St. James Catholic Church, 25 Elm St., Concord, N.C. 28025.
