Hornet girls enjoy biggest blowout victory in three years

BY MIKE LONDON
SALISBURY POST

A blowout win for Salisbury’s girls basketball team? What’s the world coming to?

The Hornets recorded their most lopsided victory since a 33-point rout of Monroe early in 1998, as they ran roughshod over Concord 64-36 on Wednesday night. Salisbury (3-2) bounced right back from Tuesday’s disappointing three-point loss at South Rowan to smack the Spiders (0-3) for the second time in eight days. It was a bit of revenge for the Hornets, who got mauled 82-34 by a powerhouse Spider team a year ago.

It was a nightmare first half for Concord, which made just two of its 27 field goal tries in the first half. It trailed 11-2 after a quarter and by 23-6 at halftime. Latoya Lynch, who led the Spiders with 16 points, scored two minutes into the game to put her team on the board. But the Spiders couldn’t move the scoreboard for the next seven minutes.

Part of it was the Hornets’ defense. Part of it was Concord point guard Adrienne Russell going down with a sprained ankle and quick penetrator Raven Patton getting in early foul trouble. Without that experienced pair on the floor, coach Greg Byrd’s rebuilding team was at the Hornets’ mercy.

“We knew what to expect from Concord because we just played them,” said Hornet forward Jenny Reilly. “We were glad to have the chance to play another game — instead of practicing — after the South game. If we’d practiced, Coach would have kept us out here awhile.”

Reilly stayed hot, scoring 24 points, pulling down 13 rebounds and coming up with five steals in the second quarter alone. Keke Chunn added 19 points. And the best thing of all, according to Shoaf, was guard Ternisha Charleston’s 11-point effort, her first double-figure game of the season.

“That’s so big for us,” said Shoaf. “Jenny and Keke are scoring consistently. Now we just need to get Ternisha some confidence. We’ve got to have all three of those seniors playing like they did tonight.”

With all three seniors clicking — there were any number of successful fastbreaks on which the whole trio touched the ball — the Hornets looked sharp. They led by as many as 31 points with 4:30 remaining.

Reilly made lots of free throws, follow shots and short jumpers and even knocked in a 3-pointer.

“I’m 2-for-2 on 3s for my career now,” quipped Reilly, who is averaging over 20 points per game inside, after scoring at an 8.8 ppg clip on the wing last season.

Reilly just missed hooking in a no-look 10-footer that was right out of the Randall Jones repertoire. It slid off the rim.

“I thought if that one went in, I was going to shoot them all backwards from now on,” joked Reilly.

“It’s a good thing it didn’t go,” answered Shoaf, in an equally merry mood. “Reilly’s head would have swelled to where it wouldn’t fit in the gym anymore.”

The Hornets scored more than 60 points for the first time in 19 games. Chunn, who blew by clusters of Spiders all night, was a terror with seven steals and scored four points in the first few seconds of the second half to make sure Concord didn’t entertain any comeback hopes.

“It was good to see a good start in the second half,” said Shoaf. “I kept worrying about us going flat after we got that big lead, because Concord came from 20 down to almost beat Piedmont on Tuesday.”

But even with Charleston and inside starter Crystal Taylor limited by four fouls, the Hornets rolled right to the buzzer. The only down notes were ankle injuries suffered by Chunn and reserve guard Jamie Seay. Shoaf hated Chunn got hurt — her injury came with just 2:34 remaining and the game in the bag — but Shoaf didn’t have a whole lot of options.

“One of the assistants said right before that, ‘Maybe we should sub some people.’ But who?” asked Shoaf. “We practiced Monday with eight girls.”

Reserve Anita Edwards is already out with an injured ankle, Courtney Penny is headed to Ohio and another player on the opening day roster has left the team. Shoaf has called up a pair of jayvees, but it will be a few games before they can really help out.
