Charles ‘Babe’ Alexander

KANNAPOLIS — Charles William “Babe” Alexander, 67, 306 Central Ave., died Tuesday, (Nov. 28, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a serious illness of several days.

Born July 6, 1933, in China Grove, Mr. Alexander was a son of the late Will and Emma Partee Alexander.

A 1952 graduate of Aggrey Memorial High School, he was a retired truck driver for Fieldcrest Cannon and a member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church in Landis, where he was a member of the Men’s Chorus.

Son Charles W. Alexander Jr. died on May 22, 1979.

Survivors include wife Bettye J. Barnes Alexander; son Kenneth Ray Alexander, Syracuse, N.Y.; daughters Trina D. Flowe, Landis, and Kellie R. Alexander, Kannapolis; brother Robert C. Alexander, Durham; sisters Amanda Smith and Imojean Martin, both of Kannapolis; and four grandchildren.

James Vernon Askew

James Vernon Askew, 61, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at his residence.

John Robert Bennett

KANNAPOLIS — John Robert Bennett, 74, Liberty Commons Nursing Center, formerly of Kannapolis, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at the center.

Born Oct. 30, 1926, in Iredell County, Mr. Bennett was a son of the late Mae Owens and Robert Bennett. A 1944 graduate of Mooresville High School, he retired from Fieldcrest Cannon dye department. He was a member of Central Methodist Church.

His wife, Dorothy Hartis Bennett, died Jan. 11, 1990.

Survivors include daughters Donna Burr, China Grove, and Patricia Reid, Morganton; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Hinson. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Blanche Bebber Canup

KANNAPOLIS —Blanche Leona Bebber Canup, 2307 Lane St., died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000)at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born Aug. 5, 1903, in Alexander County, Mrs. Canup was a daughter of the late Early Little and Carrie Thomas Bebber. Retired from Cannon Mills, she was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, the Friendly Circle Sunday school class and Callie Euna Women of the Church.

Mrs. Canup was preceded in death by her husband of more than 69 years, John Lewis Canup, who died in 1995; daughters Phyllis Ann Canup Pepper, who died in 1996, Helen Blanche Canup, who died in 1928, and Glenna Ailene Canup, who died in 1932.

Survivors include daughters Margie Marie McLendon, Charlotte, and Jonnie Lane Critz, Kannapolis; brother John Little Bebber, Taylorsville; sisters Cecil Canup, Hazel Watts and Inez Johnson, all of Kannapolis and Mildred Meadlock, Taylorsville; four grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Hoke Ritchie. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Albert Lee Casey

Albert Lee Casey, 78, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury after a serious illness of five months.

Born Jan. 1, 1922, in Rowan County, Mr. Casey was a son of the late Claude Freeze and Ora Peninger Casey.

Educated in the Rowan County Schools, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the European Theater.

He retired after 35 years with Cone Mills and was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Aileen Miller Casey; daughter Donna Simmons, Salisbury; and sisters Rachel Beacham, Salisbury, and Doris Long, Elizabeth City.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the VA chaplain.

Visitation: 12:45-1:45 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of daughter Donna Simmons.

Mary Fisher Clayton

KANNAPOLIS — Mary Fisher Clayton, 95, formerly of 123 Tanglewood Drive, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Paul Charles Curcio

ALBEMARLE — Paul Charles Curcio, 610 Pond St., died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 13, 1917, in Sommatino, Sicily, Mr. Curcio was a son of the late Paul Charles and Barbara Calabero Curcio. He immigrated to the United States in 1924 through Ellis Island, N.Y., and was president of Curcio Reality in North Miami, Fla., before retiring in 1983. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Mr. Curcio was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Van Cheri Curcio.

Survivors include wife Marilyn Marshall Curcio, of the home; sons Paul Curcio Jr., Palm Harbor, Fla., Andrew Paul Curcio, Largo, Fla., and Charles Paul Curcio, of the home; daughter Karen Elizabeth Bochner, Largo, Fla.; brother Arthur Marshall, Pleasant Hill, Ohio; sisters Jane Penna and Betty Alaimo, both of Rochester, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Ben Wilson. Burial, Arlington Cemetery, Arlington, Ohio.

Betty Freeman

KANNAPOLIS —The funeral will be Friday for Betty Culbertson Freeman, 99, 1900 Florida Ave., who died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000) at her residence.

Born Dec. 27, 1900, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Freeman was a daughter of the late John T. and Lela Chandler Culbertson and was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles James Freeman, and a son, Charles Ray Freeman, who died Nov. 27, 2000.

Mrs. Freeman is survived by two grandsons and a great-grandson.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by Preacher Marshall Brooks. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

 

Jim Haney

KANNAPOLIS — James Everette “Jim” Haney, 65, 1912 Normandy Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at his home.

Born Sept. 13, 1935, in Lavonia, Ga., Mr. Haney was a son of the late Jewel M. and Myrtie Lee Thomas Haney.

He lived in this area most of his life and was a member of North Kannapolis Baptist Church. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of the American Legion in Concord and Perkins VFW Post 8989 in Kannapolis.

Mr. Haney worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years and retired several years ago from the Postal Service’s Kannapolis branch.

Survivors include wife of 44 years, Jean Snow Haney; daughters Cathy Denise Haney, China Grove, Jeannie Lynn Smith and Kimberly Jo Freeze, both of Kannapolis, and Jamie Leigh Jolly, Salisbury; sister Barbara Lapish, Mooresville; brother Jerry Haney, Cary; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Coy C. Privette and the Rev. Scott Wheeler. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Ethel Alleyenne Harris

CONCORD — Ethel Alleyenne Hall Harris, 84, 184 Cabarrus Ave., formerly of 620 Eudy Road, China Grove, died Saturday (Nov. 25, 2000) in Concord, after several years of declining health.

Born Nov. 14, 1916, in Rowan County, Mrs. Harris was a daughter of the late Nelson and Kattie McCathurene Harris.

Educated in the Rowan County public schools, she was a retired Fieldcrest Cannon employee and a member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, where she was a member of Missionary Board No. 2.

Husband Robert S. Harris died in December 1960, and daughter Cynthia Harris preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Robert Allan Harris, China Grove; daughter Selma Harris Joseph, Concord; brothers Clarence Hall, Barbers, and James Hall, Philadelphia, Pa.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby Smith, pastor and eulogist. Burial, church cemetery.

Minetta Harris Jackson

The funeral will be Thursday for Minetta Harris Poag Jackson, 68, 47-N Civic Park Apartments, who died Friday (Nov. 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born May 16, 1932, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jackson was a daughter of Carrie B. Withers Hawkins, Salisbury, and the late Frank Harris.

A graduate of J.C. Price High School, she retired from the B.F. Goodrich Co. and was a member of Henderson Grove Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Kitchen Committee and the Mass Choir.

Her first husband, Hezekiah Poag, and second husband, J.C. Jackson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Hezekiah PoagJr., Salisbury, Ronald Dean Poag, Lexington, and James Henry Poag, of the home; sister Willette Brown, Salisbury; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Henderson Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Rodney Eldridge, pastor. Eulogy by Edgar N. Shepard. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Thursday at the church. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Evelyn Mattox

PALM BAY, Fla. —Evelyn Gill Mattox, 76, 600 Delmonico St. NE, formerly of Salisbury, N.C., died Friday (Nov. 24, 2000)at her residence.

Born Dec. 4, 1923, in Chattaroy, W.Va., Mrs. Mattox was a homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Felton Mattox, who died Dec. 28, 1991.

Survivors include daughter Lori Kohler, Fort Worth, Texas; son Mark Douglas Mattox, Palm Bay, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Services: Graveside,2 p.m. Friday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Leon Hawks.

Visitation:Visitation will follow the service.

ROCKWELL — Jack Misenheimer, 58, Rockwell, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at his residence.

Jerry Lee Moore

MOORESVILLE — Jerry Lee Moore, 59, of Logan Street, died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000) at Lake Norman RegionalMedical Center.

Born April 13, 1941, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Moore was a son of the late Elbert Herron and Nannie Nance Moore. He was a retired supervisor for Superba Print Works, Mooresville, having been with the company for more than 10 years. A member of the Mooresville Church of God, he taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent, was a member of the Men’s Council and sang in the choir.

Survivors include wife Gail Nichols Moore, whom he married Nov. 26, 1961; sons James Anthony “Tony” Moore, Richard Lee “Ritchie” Moore and Darrell Wayne Moore, all of Mooresville; brothers Thomas Moore, Mooresville, and Robert Moore, Troutman; sisters Carolyn M. Neel and Elaine M. McHargue, both of Mooresville; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Mooresville Church of God, conducted by the Rev. John C. Miles and the Rev. Kenneth Looney. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Alonzo Hezekiah Payne

EAST SPENCER — Alonzo Hezekiah Payne, 85, 408 Geriod St., died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center after a serious illness of several weeks.

Born Oct. 26, 1915, in Salisbury, Mr. Payne was a son of the late George and Fannie Rankin Payne.

He attended Rowan County public schools and retired from Cannon Mills, No. 7 and Thomas and Howard.

Mr. Payne was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, and was a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107 and Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, where he was a trustee.

Wife Alma Woods Payne preceded him in death.

Services: Noon Friday, Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Murray Edward. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery. Military rites by the Rowan County Veteran’s Council.

Visitation: 11:30 a.m. Friday at the church. The family will be at the Holmes family home, 513 E. Bank St.

Roland Edward Shepard

FAYETTEVILLE — Roland Edward Shepard, 74, 3000-C Hickory Hill Road, died Sunday (Nov. 26, 2000)at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Shepard was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in World War II, was a member of Disabled American Veterans and a member of the American Legion.

Survivors include sons Ernest L. Shepard, Fayetteville, Rawl Steed and Judge Hayward Steed, both of Bronx, N.Y. and Duane Steed, Lomita, Calif.; daughters Cynthia S. Doss and Monique Shepard, both of Fayetteville, Gwen Fisher and Jean Taylor, both of Spencer, Carolyn Brown, Louisburg, Sandra Steed, Bronx, N.Y., Debra Byas, New York, N.Y., and Sheila Steed, Columbia, Md.; brother William Jenkins, Alameda, Calif.; sister Charlotte Puckett, Hot Springs, Ariz.; 26 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

CLEVELAND — John Richard Sheek, North Depot Street, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Everett Lloyd Tomfeld

MISENHEIMER — Everett Lloyd Tomfeld, 92, 48374 Pfeiffer Place, died Monday (Nov. 27, 2000)at Stanly Manor.

Born Nov. 25, 1908, in West Liberty, Muscatine County, Iowa, Mr. Tomfeld was a son of the late Henry Claus and Jessie Frances Longstreth Tomfeld. He retired from Huttig, where he was a foreman.

Mr. Tomfeld was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Anderson Tomfeld, and a daughter, Carolyn Tomfeld Evans.

Survivors include brothers Wayne Tomfeld, Muscatine, Iowa, and Clifford Tomfeld, Donnellson, Iowa; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: A service will be conducted at a later date in Iowa. Burial, Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, Iowa.

Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, is in charge of local arrangements.

Rev. Frank Walker

The Rev. Frank Sherman Walker, 57, 315 Chesapeake Drive, died Sunday (Nov. 26, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem after an illness of four weeks.

Born Feb. 17, 1943, in Iredell County, Rev. Walker was a son of Sherman and Creola Shuford Walker, Salisbury.

He attended Rowan County public schools and worked for Carolina Tire and Equipment. He was a member of Hall Temple Holiness Church and was a former pastor of New Life Holy Temple No. 3, East Spencer.

Survivors include wife Minnola Smith Walker; son Frank J. Walker, Concord; daughters Teresa W. Horton, Salisbury, and Dianne W. Vaughters, Linwood; brother James Walker, Salisbury; sisters Louise Lyons and Mamie Jefferies, both of Salisbury; and nine grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, New Life Holy Temple No. 3, conducted by Pastor G.A. Graham and Bishop E.L. Gray, eulogist. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.
