Dorothy White Burris

OAKBORO — Dorothy Christine White Burris, 52, 8525 Hill Ford Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 23, 1948, in Stanly County, Mrs. Burris was a daughter of the late Leo Farmer and John Houston White. A housekeeper with Oakboro Baptist Home for the Aged, she was a Baptist.

Survivors include husband Melvin Eugene Burris; daughter Christy Burris, of the home; stepdaughter Darlene Burris, Albemarle; brother James White, Albemarle; and one step-grandchild.

Services:4 p.m. Friday, Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Garry Baker and the Rev. Charles Carver. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Charlie ‘Buck’Deal

Charlie Thomas “Buck”Deal, 89, 370 Buck Drive, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at his home.

Born Feb. 26, 1911, in Rowan County, Mr. Deal was a son of the late Charlie Alexander and Maggie Sophia Hileman Deal. Educated in Woodleaf schools, he retired from Cannon Mills as a foreman in No. 2 card room. A long- time member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, he served on the church council for many years and was a member of the Friendship Club.

His first wife, Margie Wilhelm Deal, died April 20, 1998.

Survivors include wife Mae Porter Deal; sons the Rev. Donald Deal, Mount Pleasant, and Jimmie Deal, Salisbury; daughters Peggy Hall, Burlington, Linda Beaver, Salisbury, and Libby McLean, Walhalla, S.C.; stepdaughter Shirley Hoosier, Salisbury; brother James Deal, Salisbury, and Levi Deal, Greensboro; sisters Ethel Snider, Woodleaf, and Mary McDaniel, Rockwell; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie. Burial, St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.

This will be a double funeral for Mr. Deal and his sister, Nannie Deal Wilhelm, who died Tuesday, Nov. 21.

Visitation:10-11 a.m. Friday at the church fellowship hall. The body can be viewed Thursday, 2-4 p.m., Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Ruby May Downs

CONCORD — Ruby May Downs, 82, formerly of 4536 Rocky River Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Hunter Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Charlotte, after many years of declining health.

Born Sept. 15, 1918, in Stanly County, Mrs. Downs was a daughter of the late Thomas and Maggie Laton May. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Downs was preceded in death by her husband, Lamont R. Downs, and sons William B. “Billy” Downs and Bobby Downs.

Survivors include sons Wayne Downs, Columbia, S.C., and Jerry Downs, Lufkin, Texas; brother Frank May, Kannapolis; sister Pauline Lefler, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. R.J. Hammond. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral Home.

 

‘Bud’ William Dunigan

HIGH POINT — Thomas “Bud”William Dunigan, 67, 2400 E. Lexington Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2000)at the High Point Regional Hospital.

He was the brother of Viola Yates, Granite Quarry.

Services:11 a.m. Saturday, Reavis Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Floral Garden Park Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Virgil Linwood Howard

KANNAPOLIS — Virgil Linwood Howard, 78, 1304 Brantley Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after two years of declining health and six months of serious illness.

Born Nov. 18, 1922, in Richmond, Va., Mr. Howard was a son of the late Ernest Linwood and Laura Cross Howard. He retired several years ago from Modern Wholesale in Kannapolis. He formerly worked for Jackson Park Furniture.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church, where he served as head usher for several years.

His first wife, Shirley Rogers Howard, died March 28, 1970.

Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Helen Smith Howard; stepsons Ted A. Brown, Kannapolis, and Richard E. Brown,Mooresville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Jackson Park United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Skipper Watwood and the Rev. Ray Moss. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:6-8 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Willie Mae Fisher Joyce

Willie Mae Fisher Joyce, 98, 409 Grace St., died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000)at Autumn Care of Salisbury, after many years of declining health and four weeks of serious illness.

Born March 27, 1902, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie “Pete”and Elizabeth Gibson Fisher. Educated in Rowan County public schools, she retired from the laundry department of Livingstone College after 30 years. She was a member of Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, where she once served as deaconess, stewardess, in the Lay Council, Sujette Smith Missionary Society and the Life Members Council. She was also past president of the J.C. Price American Legion Auxiliary 107 and was a Gold Star Mother. She also was a member of the Rose of Sharon Chapter Order of the Eastern Star and the Court of Calanthe, Omega Court.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Joyce, and sons Thomas and James Joyce.

She is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. T. Anthony Spearman, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Friday at the church. At other times the family will be the home of Dorothy Colbert, 429 Grace St., Salisbury.

Mitchell & Fair Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Richard Jess Kerr

Richard Jess Kerr, 74, New Bern, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000)at New Bern Health Care.

Mr. Kerr attended River Bend Baptist Church and was a member of Bogue Banks Lions Club.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Moye Kerr; sons Richard Kerr Jr., Atlantic Beach, and William L. Kerr, Raleigh; daughters Kathy Regalmuto, New Bern, and Victoria Kerr, Beaufort; mother Viola Myers, Salisbury; sister Marilyn Hubbard, Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Friday, Cotton Funeral Home, New Bern, conducted by the Rev. Steven Simpson. Entombment, Gethsemane Memorial Garden.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

Ernest Edward Laton

ALBEMARLE — Ernest Edward Laton, 77, 604 Rogers St., died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000)at his home.

Born July 30, 1923, in Stanly County, Mr. Laton was a son of the late James F. and Desdie Hopkins Laton. A retired employee of Albemarle Spinning Mill, he was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include brothers William O. Layton, Orlando, Fla., J.D., Bobby J. and Carroll Layton, all of Albemarle; and sister Esther L. Crump, Albemarle.

Services:Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, Poplin’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Walton.

Visitation:None.

 

Ida Lawing

KANNAPOLIS —The funeral will be Friday for Ida Mae Goodnight Lawing, 84, formerly of Broad Street, who died Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2000) at Avante at Concord after two years of declining health.

Born June 15, 1916, in Kannapolis, Mrs. Lawing was a daughter of the late John and Ada Williams Goodnight. She retired from Cannon Mills in 1978 after 37 years with the company.

Her husband, Ray Lawing, died Feb. 1, 1998.

Survivors include daughters Mary Ann Adams, Moravian Falls, and Bettie Williams, Kannapolis; son Billy Ray Lawing, Kannapolis; sister Nellie Karriker, Kannapolis; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Barbara Clodfelter. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:12-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

W. Ben Smith

OAKBORO —W. Ben Smith, 18837 Graham Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000)at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Born May 5, 1912, in Stanly County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Eli Roden and Alice Louise Whitley Smith. He retired as a barber from Centerville Barber Shop. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Leola Barbee Smith; daughter Tyra Pazur, New London; sister Kermit S. Curlee, Oakboro; brother Henry H. Smith, Oakboro; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:2 p.m. Friday, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Phillip Hunter and the Rev. Dolan Talbert. Burial, church cemetery.

Madeleine Hagler Wagoner

Madeleine Hagler Wagoner, 81, 820 Klumac Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 22, 2000) at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mable Mann Whitley

ALBEMARLE —Mable Mann Whitley, 73, 33433 Mann Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000)at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.

Born March 4, 1927, in Stanly County, Mrs. Whitley was a daughter of the late Charlie Baxter and Cora Caudle Mann. A retired Wiscassett Mill Co. employee, she was a member of West Albemarle Baptist Church for 60 years and a member of Loraine Vanhoy Sunday School Class.

Survivors include husband Pete Whitley, of the home; son David Edward Whitley, Albemarle; daughters Jo Ann W. Roberts, Sisters, Ore., Sandra W. Phillips, Pocono, Pa., and Debbie W. Riggsby, Albemarle; sisters Edith Lewis and Ollie Morris, both of Albemarle; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, West Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Wiley Rutledge, the Rev. Nathan Fox and the Rev. Clay Waters. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Friday, Stanly Funeral Home.
