            ‘Bill’Robert Adkins

William “Bill”Robert Adkins, 86, 9500 Shore Drive, Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Sunday (Nov. 19, 2000)at Grand Stand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Born Aug. 7, 1914, in Parksville, Tenn., Mr. Adkins was a son of the late James Lewis and Ella Lucinda Belk Adkins. A retired owner and operator of Highway 52 Curb Market, Albemarle, He was a Mason, a member of Yadkin Falls Lodge 637, Badin.

His wife, Edith Morton Adkins, died July 8, 1999.

Survivors include daughters Billie Ann Barker, Cary, Edith Cavell Cole, Myrtle Beach, S.C., Beverly Morton Shue, Albemarle and Jane Cole, North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother Wade L. Adkins, Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Stanly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Claude Dick. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

‘Chuck’W. Campbell

Charles “Chuck”Woodrow Campbell, 69, 970 Briggs Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born July 11, 1931, in Cooleemee, Mr. Campbell was a son of the late Preston Clifford and Pearlie Almeda Patton Campbell. Educated in Davie County, Mr. Campbell was employed by E.M. Goodman &Son Construction for 19 years. He retired from Department of Labor Apprenticeship Department after 26 years. A member of Salem Lutheran Church, he served on church council. He was a life member of Rowan County Rescue Squad, serving as assistant chief, on the EMS Advisory Board and was commander of N.C. Association of Rescue Squads 1968-1970.

A daughter, Donna Lee Campbell, died in 1955.

Survivors include wife Judi Yarbrough Campbell; daughters Mary Lynn Campbell Cooper, Smithsburg, Md., and Kathy Sue Campbell Smith, Salisbury; stepdaughter Julia Katherine Sprague, Metamora, Mich.; brother James M. Campbell, Greenville; sisters Lois Page, Williamsburg, Va., and Louis Aldridge, Rapid City, S.D.; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Clarence Sifford and the Rev. Carroll Robinson. The body will be cremated.

Visitation:10-11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Charlie ‘Buck’ Deal

Charlie “Buck” Deal, 89, 370 Buck Drive, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000)at his residence.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Doris Dwan Dunevant

ALBEMARLE —Doris Dwan Dunevant, 76, 219 Austin St., died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born April 29, 1924, in London, England, Mrs. Dunevant was a daughter of the late William and Emma Allen Dwan. She was a volunteer with Stanly County Clothing Closet and member of Women’s Army Air Force, England. She was a member of West Albemarle Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher, active in mission work and vacation Bible school and a member of Happiness Club.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy Dunevant.

Survivors include husband the Rev. J. Clifton Dunevant; sons Paul Dunevant, Hartsville, S.C., and Lindsey Dunevant, Albemarle; daughters Jo Angelina Cooke, Albemarle, Deborah Mitchell, Monroe, and Cindy Dunevant, Locust.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, West Albemarle Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Clay Waters and the Rev. Jerry McKinney. Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Clement Baptist Church Cemetery, Roxboro.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Stanly Funeral Home.

Ira Louis ‘Dog’ Harris

LEXINGTON —Ira Louis “Dog”Harris, 67, 1330 Feezor Road, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Feb. 7, 1933, in Southmont, he was a son of the late Delos and Earline Ann Adderton Harris. Educated at Dunbar High School, Lexington, he attended Livingstone College and mortuary school in New York. He was a salesman with Kraft Sealtest Foods and owned Harris Superette. A former employee of Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of Union Baptist Church and founder of Dunbar High School reunion.

Survivors include companion Geneva Scott, of the home; daughter Debra L. Harris, Cleveland, Ohio; sister Dothula Hargrave, Bishop, Va.; and one grandchild.

Services: Noon Friday, Union Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Thomas, pastor.

Visitation:11:30 a.m.-noon Friday at the church.

Rowan Funeral Service of Salisbury is in charge.

 

Rosemary Koontz Harwood

ALBEMARLE — Rosemary Koontz Harwood, 82, 244 Concord Road, died Monday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Britthaven of Charlotte.

Born Nov. 10, 1918, in North Dakota, Mrs. Harwood was a daughter of the late John Koontz. A graduate of Indiana State University, she was a retired school teacher. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Her husband, Macon Alexander Harwood, died May 20, 1979.

Survivors include son Philip Harwood, Albemarle; brother John Koontz Jr., Conneaut, Ohio; sister Beatrice Kelley, Washington, D.C.; and one granddaughter.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Main Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Rorie. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home.

 

Ida Lawing

KANNAPOLIS —Ida Goodnight Lawing, 84, formerly of Broad Street, died today (Nov. 22, 2000) at Avante of Concord.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Charles Eugene Readling

GREENSBORO —Charles Eugene Readling, 69, Tamaron Drive, died Monday (Nov. 20, 2000) at Moses Cone Hospital following a brief illness.

Born April 21, 1931, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Readling was a son of the late Zebulon and Mattie Gray Readling. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 30 years and was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Nancy Lyerly, formerly of Salisbury; daughters Sharon Walker, Little Mountain, S.C., and Susan Osmann, Matthews, N.C.; and three grandchildren.

Services:3 today, Forbis and Dick Guilford Chapel, Greensboro. Burial, Westminster Gardens.

Visitation: 2-3 today at the funeral home.

Archie L. Shoaf

LEXINGTON — Archie L. Shoaf, 84, 909 Rockcrusher Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Golden Age Nursing Home.

Born Nov. 12, 1916, in Davidson County, Mr. Shoaf was a son of the late Frederick Mondlen and Mary Etta Fritts Shoaf. He retired from Davidson County Schools and had been a farmer. He was a member of Cotton Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Lois Myers Shoaf; daughters Kathryn Williams, Frances Kirkus, and Mary Floyd, all of Lexington; sons James E. and Archie E. Shoaf, both of Lexington; sisters Dorothy McDaniel, Mary Byerly, Lillian and Mamie Lanning, all of Lexington; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Ed Armfield Jr. and the Rev. Larry Peterson. Burial, Cotton Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation:6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont FuneralHome. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Alfredo Luke Vazquez

RICHFIELD —Alfredo Luke Vazquez, 1 month, 44175 Old U.S. 52, died Monday (Nov. 20, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Born Oct. 12, 2000, in Charlotte, he was a son of Tammy Lynn Vazquez and Alfredo Vazquez Jr.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sisters Sherry Nicole, Brandy Lynn and Samantha Hope Vazquez, all of the home; paternal grandparents Alfredo Vazquez and Kathleen McCauley, both of Baltimore, Md.; maternal grandparents Lewis and Donna Buzzard, both of Hillsboro, W.Va.; and maternal great-grandmother Velma Shue, Hillsboro, W.Va.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Norview Gardens.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Tony Curtis Watkins

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. —Tony Curtis Watkins, 48, formerly of Salisbury, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000)at his residence.

Born Feb. 2, 1952, in Salisbury, Mr. Watkins was a son of Ollie J. and Louise Wyatt Watkins of Satellite Beach, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army for 10 years. He was a heavy equipment operator for Brevard County School Board in Cocoa, Fla.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include brothers Roger D. Watkins, Port St. John, Fla., and Scotty Watkins, Huntersville, Ala.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Wilkes, pastor, Neel Road Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park; graveside rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation:6-7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Nannie Mae Deal Wilhelm

Nannie Mae Deal Wilhelm, 6311 Old Concord Road, died Tuesday (Nov. 21, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 24, 1908, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie Alexander and Maggie Sophia Hileman Deal. A graduate of Woodleaf High School, she retired from Cannon Mills. She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Paul Clay Wilhelm, died April 7, 1983.

Survivors include brothers James and C.T. “Buck” Deal, both of Salisbury, and Levi Deal, Greensboro; and sisters Mary McDaniel, Rockwell, and Ethel Snider, Woodleaf.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Friday, at the church fellowship hall. The body can be viewed at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, 2-4 p.m., Thursday.
