Zelma Lee Shuford Alston

GRANITE QUARRY — Zelma Lee Shuford Alston, 78, 303 S. Oak St., died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health.

Born May 1, 1922, in Granite Quarry, Mrs. Alston was a daughter of the late Fred S. and Bessie Beatty Shuford. Educated in Rowan County public schools, she was a retired employee of the Rowan County school system and a member of White Rock AME Zion Church.

Son Bennie J. Alston died Aug. 31, 1985.

Survivors include husband James E. “Skeet”Alston; sons Willie G. Alston, New Haven, Conn., Norman S. Alston, Salisbury, Clarence A., James M. “Dan” and Cecil A. Alston, all of Granite Quarry; daughters Zelma Alston, Granite Quarry, and Kathy L. Alston, Salisbury; sisters Wilma Shuford, Granite Quarry, Lois Keith, Philadelphia, Pa., Mittie Rustin, Washington, D.C., and Christine Leazer, Mooresville; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Cindy A. Beck

LEXINGTON —Cindy Leigh Archie Beck, 40, Pinecrest Drive, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at her residence.

Born Sept. 2, 1960, in Rowan County, Ms. Beck was a daughter of Larry Archie and Doris Smith Myers, both of Lexington. She was formerly employed with the city of Salisbury.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother Larry Archie Jr., Raleigh, and sister Lori Ann Archie, Lexington.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Davidson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Cartrette. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation:1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of mother Doris Smith Myers.

 

Margaret Holder DeBoer

ROCKWELL — Margaret Holder DeBoer, 83, of the Meadows Retirement Center, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000) at her residence, after several months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born July 13, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. DeBoer was a daughter of the late Emory L. and Bessie Byerly Holder. Educated in Rowan County schools Mrs. DeBoer was a homemaker and had lived in Michigan for 30 years before returning to Salisbury in 1976. She was a Baptist.

Her husband, Charles H. DeBoer, preceded her in death.

Survivors include brother Grover L. Holder, Spencer; sisters Helen Morphis, Lexington, Mary Wilkerson, Spencer, and Marjorie Starnes, Salisbury.

Services:Graveside, 2 p.m. Monday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor, Trading Ford Baptist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home.

 

Ralph Edmonds

SWANNANOA — Ralph Edmonds, 89, 110 Gibbs St., died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at Mountain Area Hospice.

A daughter, Barbara Sprinkle, lives in Salisbury.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, Miller Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James Lamb and the Rev. Jerry Pereira. Burial, Piney Grove Presbyterian Cemetery.

Visitation:2-4:30 today at the funeral home.

 

Ira Louis Harris

LEXINGTON — Ira Louis Harris, 67, 1330 Feezor Road, died Saturday (Nov. 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Shirley Kindle Jackson

LEXINGTON — Shirley Kindle Jackson, 57, formerly of Jamaica Drive, died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000) at High Point Regional Hospital.

Born Aug. 30, 1943, in Davidson County, Ms. Jackson was a daughter of the late Nara Lucille Kindle and Winford Banks. A 1963 graduate of Dunbar High School, she was a seamstress at Edgewood Apparel and a member of Life in the Word Fellowship Church.

Survivors include son James Lamont Jackson, Lexington; daughters Toni Sherrell Howard, Patrice Howard Pressley and Janice Jackson Burns, all of Lexington; brothers David Kindle, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Elder A.R. Kindle, Mount Vernon, N.Y.; sisters Frances Hendricks, Maryland, and Annie Lee Kindle Moseley, Lexington; and eight grandchildren.

Services:2:30 p.m. Monday, Good Hope Fire Baptize Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Eddie Scott, eulogist, and the Rev. Clementine Gunter, pastor. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-2:30 p.m. Monday, at the church. The remains may be viewed 1-8 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, Morrison-Studevent Home of Lexington.

 

Ellen Hearne Miller

KANNAPOLIS — Ellen Hearne Miller, 76, 1810 Concord Lake Road, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000)at Transitional Health Services of Kannapolis.

Born July 9, 1924, in Stanly County, Mrs. Miller was a daughter of the late Eben Lawson and Laura Reynolds Hearne. A graduate of Albemarle High school, she attended Salem College. Mrs. Miller worked for the Stanly News and Press, as society editor, and later at the Concord Tribune in various capacities. She also worked with the N.C. Department of Highways at Harrisburg and retired as a librarian at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She also served on the boards of the Albemarle Public Library and Stanly County Historical Society and was a member of First Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Robert L. Miller Jr., died in 1988.

Survivors include sons Eben Hearne Miller, Charlotte, and Robert Lee Miller III, Concord; sister Betty J. Garrison, Albemarle; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, First Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John W. Futterer. Burial, Hearne Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation:No formal visitation.

Phyllis Marie Thomas Sells

Phyllis Marie Thomas Sells, 55, Salisbury, died Saturday (Nov. 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 20, 1945, in Landgraff, W.Va., Mrs. Sells was a daughter of the late Clarence Hicklin and Thelma Olline Thomas-Thomas. Educated in Oakvale, W.Va. schools, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Sells was a volunteer at the W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center and a member of Christiana Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Charlie Glenn Sells Jr.; daughter Jaclyn Christine Sells, of the home; brothers Eldridge Thomas, Grundy, Va., Russell Thomas, Rural Hall, and James Thomas, Summersville, Fla.; and sisters Mary Hicks, Rock, W.Va., Janis Parrish, Winston-Salem, and Linda Godlewski, Clemmons.

Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, Christiana Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Carl M. Haynes, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

 

William Denard Wilson

William Denard Wilson, 78, formerly of Lantz Avenue, died Friday (Nov. 17, 20000)at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation of Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.
