Captain Alvin C. Berg

Captain Alvin C. Berg, 86, formerly of Coronado, Calif., died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, where he resided for the past year.

Born Feb. 3, 1914, in Blackhammer, Minn., Captain Berg was a son of the late Olif and Regina Moen Berg. A graduate of Wenonah State University, in Minnesota, he was commissioned as an ensign in the U.S. Navy School of Aviation in 1938. During his 26 years of service, he served in North Africa during World War II and as commanding officer of the USS Yorktown from 1953-1955, and COCIC School NAS Glynco, Brunswick, Ga., 1957-1959. His final tour of duty was as naval attache to Athens, Greece, 1960-1962. After his retirement from service, Captain Berg was employed as a liaison officer by the Hellenic shipyards in Athens, Greece.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha “Patty” Francis Woodson Berg, who died Nov. 30, 1981, and a daughter, Martha Jean Berg House.

Survivors include sons Donald S. Berg, Salisbury, and Robert C. Berg, Hickory; and five grandchildren.

A family prayer service was held Wednesday at Summersett Funeral Home. Remains were donated to a medical research center. A family memorial will be held at a later date.

 

Cathy Cook

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be today for Cathy Jeanne Smith Cook, 47, 527 Pleasant Ave., who died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after an illness of three months.

Born Nov. 13, 1953, in Guntersville, Ala., Mrs. Cook was a daughter of Edward Eugene Smith and Elgie Mae Sherrill Smith, both of Guntersville Ala., She was employed by Bank of America, Charlotte, and had formerly been employed with Carolina Interiors and Mecklenburg Furniture. She was a member of the Kannapolis “West A”Church of God, where she sang in the choir, taught the 2-year-old Sunday school class and helped with the Ladies Ministries.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include daughter Tiffany C. Teague, Kannapolis; brother Marty Smith, Guntersville, Ala.; and one grandchild.

Services: 7:30 tonight, Kannapolis “West A” Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Sam Crisp and the Rev. R.W. Teague. A private committal service will be held Saturday.

Visitation: 6-7:15 tonight at the church.

Raymond Paul Fitzpatrick

ROCKWELL —Raymond Paul Fitzpatrick, 2140 Phaniels Church Road, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000).

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

 

Dorothy ‘Dot’Hardister

Dorothy “Dot”Julian Hardister, 85, of Salisbury, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury, after four years of declining health.

Born Aug. 22, 1915, in Greenville, S.C., Mrs. Hardister was the daughter of the late Bertha Leonhardt and Bruner Albert Julian. A graduate of Spencer High School, Class of 1932, she retired from Southern Bell in 1976 after 42 years. She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church, the Cornelia Kirk Sunday School Class, a life member of Southern Bell Pioneers and Rowan Shrinette.

Mrs. Hardister was preceded in death by three children, Jay Bryan Hardister, who died Dec. 2, 1996, Brenda Lee Hardister and Julian Cleve Hardister.

Survivors include husband J.C. Hardister, whom she married July 3, 1938; brothers Wilbur Julian, Winston-Salem, and Jim Julian, Jacksonville, Fla.; sisters Mildred Collins and Elizabeth Stirewalt, both of Salisbury, and Katherine Earnhardt, Conway, S.C.; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Conder, minister, Park Avenue United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:1 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home.

Paul Harding McCulloh

ADVANCE —Paul Harding McCulloh, 79, US Highway 158 East, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000).

Born June 6, 1921, in Davie County, Mr. McCulloh was a son of the late Harriet Jones and George McCulloh. He was a truck driver in the McCulloh family business in his earlier years and later became a self-employed carpenter and cattle farmer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Navy SeaBees during World War II.

Survivors include wife Hattie Smith McCulloh; sons Jerry McCulloh, China Grove, and Tim McCulloh, Advance; brother G.W. McCulloh, Charlotte; sisters Geraldine M. Smith and Bonnie M. Helsabeck, both of Advance, and Georgia Taft, Charlotte; and one grandson.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville, conducted by the Rev. Mark Weekley. Burial, Bethlehem United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

R.H. McIntosh

MOORESVILLE — R.H. McIntosh, 65, of Mooresville, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) at his residence.

Born Sept. 22, 1935, in Iredell County, Mr. McIntosh was a son of Mabel Hager McIntosh, of Davidson, and the late H.O. McIntosh. Retired, he had been a serviceman for Piedmont Natural Gas Company, Charlotte, for 35 years.

A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a member of Steele Creek Masonic Lodge, as well as a charter member, life member and past master of the James K. Polk Masonic Lodge in Pineville. He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies and Oasis Shrine Temple and had just received his 25-year Service Award from Grand Lodge of North Carolina. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Becky Moore McIntosh, whom he married June 17, 1961; son Bob McIntosh, Cornelius; daughters Anne McIntosh, Davidson, and Shannon McIntosh, Mooresville; brothers Richard and Ruben McIntosh, both of Davidson, and Raymond McIntosh, Mooresville; and two grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Saturday, First Presbyterian Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Fred A. Coates. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-8 tonight, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville.

Grace Smith Shepherd

Grace Smith Shepherd, 96, of Salisbury, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2000) at Lutheran Home, Salisbury.

Born Oct. 26, 1904, in Davidson County, Mrs. Shepherd was a daughter of the late Susan Bean and David Earlie Smith. Educated in Davidson County schools, she was a homemaker.

A member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church, she helped organize the St. Matthews Senior Citizens Club and was a charter member of the club, member of the Clifford File Sunday School Class and a member of the LCW.

Mrs. Shepherd was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Calvin “Cal” Shepherd, who died Feb. 1961, and son Coy Shepherd.

Survivors include sons Albert, Charlie and Ralph Shepherd, all of Salisbury; daughter Elizabeth File, Salisbury; sister Daisy Smith; 14 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Saturday, St. Matthews Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bill Jeffcoat, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2:45 p.m. Saturday, at the church.
