Nancy Hearne Baker

ALBEMARLE — Nancy Hearne Baker, 69, 1000 Northbrook Drive, died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000)at her residence.

Born May 21, 1931, in Albemarle, she was a daughter of the late Laura and Eben L. Hearne. She was a retired U.S. Navy captain, having served for 20 years. After retirement, she served as personnel manager for the city of Albemarle.

Survivors include sisters Betty H. Garrison, Albemarle, and Mrs. Robert L. Miller, Concord.

Services:4 today, Hearne Cemetery, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. John Futterer. The body may be viewed at Hartsell Funeral Home prior to the service. The family will be at the home of a niece, Lydia Morgan, 610 Yadkin St., Albemarle.

Kenneth Burton Bowles

CLEVELAND — Kenneth Burton Bowles, 77, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 8, 1922, in Perry, N.Y., Mr. Bowles was a son of the late Raymond B. and Esther Ranf Bowles. Educated in N.Y. schools, he was a retired glazier, having been self-employed in stain glass repair and installation. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include wife Saralee Schott Bowles; daughters Cathy Ann Williams, Dunn, Nila Jean Binnion, Perry, N.Y., Deanna Buchman, Forks, Wash., and Donna Lynn Idalski, Cleveland; step-brothers Robert and Raymond Bowles, both of Castille, N.Y., William Bowles, Warsaw, N.Y., and Jack Bowles, Perry, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services:Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, United Church of Christ, Castille, N.Y. The body will be cremated and burial will follow at a later date in San Diego, Calif.

Evergreen Cremation Services is in charge.

 

Lulabelle Johnson Boyd

Lulabelle Johnson Boyd, 91, 701 W. Fisher St., died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Brightmoor Nursing Center, after several years of declining health.

Services:2 p.m. Saturday, Mount Zion Baptist Boyden Quarters, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. David S. Houston, pastor.

Visitation:7-8 p.m. Friday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home Inc.

 

Barry Dean Connell

Barry Dean Connell, 49, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2000) after a short illness.

Born June 1, 1951, in Woodleaf, Mr. Connell was a son of Olin Connell and the late Bessie Waller Connell. He served in the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army and the U.S. Army National Guard from 1971-1990 and received an honorable discharge in 1990. He then worked at the VA Hospital in Palo Alto, Calif., for seven years.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include companion Tom Zamora, San Jose, Calif.; children Jeannie, Barry and Joel Connell, all of Illinois; brothers Ray and R.J. Connell, both from Mocksville, and Dewey Connell, Cleveland; sisters Vickie Connell and Paulette Chattin, both of Cooleemee, Diane Waller, Salisbury, and Brenda Connell, Mocksville.

Private services were held earlier at Darling Fisher Garden Chapel, 471 E. Santa Clara St., San Jose, Calif.

 

Cathy Cook

KANNAPOLIS —Cathy Jeanne Smith Cook, 47, 527 Pleasant Ave., died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Edna Alice Juanita D’Oyley

The funeral will be Sunday for Edna Alice Juanita D’Oyley, 69, 417 Livingstone Ave., who died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at her residence.

Born June 22, 1931, in Wayne County, Mich., Mrs. D’Oyley was a daughter of the late S.U. and Alice Price Davis. Educated in Roanoke, Va., and Urbancrest, Ohio, she was a secretary. She was a member of Ambassador Christian Church and was a “mother of the church.”

She is survived by a number of cousins.

Services:Memorial, 1 p.m. Sunday, Ambassador Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. John Krider. The body will be cremated.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Anne Marie Ennis Estep

WOODSTOCK, Va. — The funeral will be Saturday for Anne Marie Ennis Estep, 83, formerly of Salisbury, who died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 31, 1917, in Greenville, N.C., Mrs. Estep was a daughter of the late Thomas E. and Anne Williams Ennis. A 1934 graduate of Boyden High School, she was employed with the Federal government in Washington, D.C., at the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and later at the renegotiation board. Mrs. Estep was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II with the WAVES.

Survivors include husband Raymond L. Estep, of the home; and sister Bobbie Ennis Ward, Winston-Salem.

Services:Graveside, 3 p.m. Saturday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. David Kelley, pastor of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, Salisbury.

Visitation:None.

Glennie Holt Gaines

Glennie Holt Gaines, 86, of Spencer, died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medial Center.

Born June 25, 1914, in Spencer, Mrs. Gaines was a daughter of the late Thurman and Glennie Kelly Holt. A graduate of Spencer schools, she completed nurses training in Annapolis, Md., and was a registered nurse at Rowan Memorial Hospital from 1969 until her retirement in May 1986.

Mrs. Gaines was member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer, the Spencer Women’s Club and the National Nurse Association.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Captain Samuel Gaines, who died in 1952, and sons George Lynn Gaines who died in 1983 and Robert H. Gaines, who died Oct. 18, 2000.

Survivors include sons Samuel Gaines, Fayetteville, Warren T. Gaines, New Orleans, La., and Douglas T. Gaines, Spencer; brother Warren Holt, Spencer; sisters Margaret Harris and Anthony Vandervliet, both of Spencer; 10 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Saturday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Franklin Myers, pastor First Baptist Church of Spencer.

Visitation:7-8:30 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home.

 

Beatrice White Gibbons

Beatrice White Gibbons, 57, of Etowah, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at Elizabeth House following a brief illness.

Born in Brevard, Mrs. Gibbons was a daughter of the late Herman and Gussie Lee Harrell White. She was a graduate of Guilford College and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She taught in the North Carolina public schools and the community college system for 25 years. She was an active member of Etowah United Methodist Church and served as an officer for the United Methodist Women.

Survivors include husband the Rev. Charles Gibbons, pastor of Etowah United Methodist Church; son Tommy Gibbons, of the home; daughter Heather Gibbons, Woodleaf; and brother George Herman White, Harvey, La.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Saturday, Etowah United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Beam, the Rev. Curran Welch, the Rev. Martha Welch and the Rev. Larry Fletcher.

Visitation:The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Rebecca Roberts Karriker

MOORESVILLE — Rebecca Roberts Karriker, 78, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 13, 1921, in Iredell County, Mrs. Karriker was a daughter in the late James Baxter and Clara Murdock Roberts. She was a retired nurse assistant for Davis Hospital, Statesville.

Mrs. Karriker was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Taylor Karriker.

Survivors include sons Dennis and Steve Karriker, both of Troutman, and David Karriker, Elizabethton, Tenn.; sister Cathy Taylor, Cleveland; brother J.B. Roberts, Burlington; stepsister Thelma Vanzant, Mooresville; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Friday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home chapel, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Dr. D. Steven Gouge. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation:6:30-7:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

Frances Brigman Krepp

KANNAPOLIS — Frances Brigman Krepp, 78, 1309 Washington Lane, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Aug. 22, 1922, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Krepp was a daughter of the late Edgar Lee and Sylvia Nash Brigman. She was employed with Cannon Mills Company, Plant No. 1, number 7 weave room for about 38 years until she retired in 1976 due to illness. An amateur radio operator since 1946, she helped during emergency situations and disaster relief efforts. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, and a lifetime resident of the area.

Mrs. Krepp was preceded in death by her husband, Jack E. Krepp, who died Jan. 26, 1999.

Survivors include son Michael Lee Krepp, Kannapolis; daughter Carolyn K. Waddell, Charlotte; and one grandchild.

Services:Memorial, 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman and the Rev. Pat Purdy.

Visitation:The family will receive friends after the service.

Franklin Eugene Menius

Franklin Eugene Menius, 45, of Salisbury, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 3, 1954, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Menius was a son of Minni Belle Lentz Menius of Rockwell and Marvin “Lucky”Menius of Rockwell. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include wife Betsy Anderson Menius, Salisbury; sons Franklin Menius Jr., of the home, and Michael Menius and Scott Anderson, both of Salisbury; daughter Savannah Menius, of the home; sister Crystal M. Clorer, Cleveland; and four grandchildren.

Services:1 p.m. Friday, Phaniels Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Greg Lentz. The body will be cremated.

Evelyn Blackwelder Moss

KANNAPOLIS — Evelyn Blackwelder Moss, 70, 903 Woodlawn St., died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Jan. 14, 1930, in Rowan County, Mrs. Moss was a daughter of the late Irvin Daniel and Mary Ruth Profitt Blackwelder. She was a member of North Kannapolis Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include sons Barry and Guye Moss, both of Kannapolis, and Ed Moss, Florida; daughters Cindy Christy, Concord, and Jenny Winters, Kannapolis; brothers Nathan Blackwelder, China Grove, and Norman Blackwelder, Connecticut; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Edwin Luther. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Barry Moss, 605 Dakota St.

Willie Culp Robinson

HIGH POINT — Willie Culp Robinson, 70, Sun Bridge for the Triads, formerly of Salisbury, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2000) at High Point Regional Health System.

Born May 15, 1930, in Charlotte, Mr. Robinson was a son of the late Fred and Irene Culp Robinson. Educated in Mecklenburg County, he was a janitor for Charlotte schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.

He is survived by a sister Jean A. Robinson, Washington.

Services:Graveside, 10 a.m. Friday, National Cemetery, conducted by Brit Baldwin, VA chaplain. The body will be viewable prior to the service. Military rites will be conducted by the Rowan Veteran Service Council.

Evelyn Mae Milton Russell

ALBEMARLE —Evelyn Mae Milton Russell, 81, 793 Lauras Lane, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born April 30, 1919, in Stanly County, Mrs. Russell was a daughter of Janie Earnhardt and George Robert Milton. She was a homemaker and a member of North Albemarle Baptist Church. She also belonged to the Three River Quilting Guild and the Doll Boutique.

Mrs. Russell was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Hill Russell, who died in 1994.

Survivors include son Joel W. Russell, Albemarle; daughter Patricia R. Lowder, Simpsonville, S.C.; brother Leroy W. Milton, Newcastle, Calif.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services:2 today, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Grady Taylor. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Louise Sanders Smoak

CHARLOTTE — Louise Sanders Smoak, 74, 4126 Winfield Drive, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at University Hospital.

Born June 23, 1926, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smoak was a daughter of the late Vera Hammett and Morrison E. Sanders. She was a retired waitress.

Survivors include husband Ronald Smoak; daughter Linda Thompson, Charlotte; half brothers Jerry W. and Morrison E. Sanders Jr., both of Concord; half sister Betty Jean Smith, Bapson Park, Fla.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, Concord. Burial, West Concord Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Linda Thompson, 407 Austin Drive.
