KANNAPOLIS — Robert Adams, 86, 215 N. Little Texas Road, died Friday (Nov. 10, 2000)at Concord Nursing Home.
Born May 8, 1914, in in Chester County, S.C., Mr. Adams was a son of the late Elliott and Nannie Ferguson Adams.He worked at Cannon Mills for 24 years. A member of First Baptist Church, he was on the Trustee Board for 60 years and chairman 32 years. He was president of the vocal choir and singing convention (CCHKS), layman, Men’s Sunday School Class and the Men’s Choir.
Survivors include son Robert Adams Jr., of the home; brother J.T. Adams, Lorraine, Ohio; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services:2:30 p.m. Friday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. P.C. Holland. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Donald Avery Beck
BADIN — Donald Avery Beck, 79, 37 Elm St., died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at his residence.
Born Feb. 13, 1921, in Badin, Mr. Beck was a son of the late Ola Mae Cruse Beck and Seba Elbert Beck. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Badin served as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deacon, treasurer, elder and vice moderator. He retired as an accountant from Alcoa and was a member of the 25 Year Club.
He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Norwich University, Northfield, Vt. Mr. Beck was a World War IIveteran of the 15th Air Corps where he flew 36 combat sorties. He was a member of the North Carolina Army National Guard and commanded the unit in Albemarle for 12 years. He retired as Ex-O of the 196th Reconnaissance Squadron with the rank of major. He was a past commander of the Badin VFW.
Survivors include wife Joy Beck; daughters Jo Anne B. Stanly, Pfafftown, Sherry B. Blalock, Lawrenceville, Ga., and Jan B. Morris, Badin; sisters Phyllis Thompson, Charlotte and Billie Ramsey, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Lulabelle Johnson Boyd, 91, 701 W. Foster St., died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Brightmore Nursing Center after several years of declining health.
Born Nov. 12, 1909, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Annie Graham and James “Jimmy”Johnson. Educated in public schools of Lincoln County, she retired as a domestic worker. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Boyden Quarters, the Missionary Circle, former past president usher, a member of Willing Workers, senior choir and a Mother of the Church. She was a member of Westside Community Club and Court of Calanthe.
Her husband, Jethro Boyd, died June 13, 1971. Son Jethro Boyd Jr., and daughter Annie Boyd Lee also preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Claude Boyd, Queens, N.Y.; daughters Dorothy Gardner and Helen Eberhart, both of Salisbury; brothers Robert Johnson, Salisbury and J.W. Johnson, Mooresville; sisters Viola Partee and Frances Wilson, both of High Point, and Callie Shaver, Springfield, Mass.; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 39 great-great-grandchildren.

Regenia Meadows Gardner
KANNAPOLIS — Regenia Meadows Gardner, 98, formerly of 1218 Margaret Ave., died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at Transitional Health Services after five years of declining health.
Born Oct. 8, 1902, in Jones County, Mrs. Gardner was a daughter of the late Isaac B. and Jennie Collins Meadows. She had been principal of a two-room school in Hartsville, S.C., for several years. She worked for Kannapolis City schools as a first grade teacher at Shadybrook Elementary School for 20 years, winning the first Teacher of the Year award in the school system. She was a longtime member of Shadybrook Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for 30 years and conducted many seminars. She and her husband, the late Rev. R.F. Gardner, helped organize Lane Street Baptist Church.
She was also preceded in death by her first husband, the Rev. Roy A. Griffin, and her second husband the Rev. Byrch Kelley.
Survivors include sons Roy L. Griffin, Kannapolis, and Donald R. Griffin, Denton; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jessie Mae Graze, 82, New York, formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at her residence.
Born Feb. 24, 1918, in Winnsboro, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Veola Miller and Jesse Kelly. She was educated at Dunbar High School and in Granite Quarry.

ROCKWELL — Thelma Jean Shuping Griffin, 62, 5810 Highway 152 East, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Feb. 27, 1938, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Lester Carl and Martha Ellen Saultz Shuping. Educated in Rowan County schools and at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, she retired from Cannon Mills. She was a member of Organ Lutheran Church and Rockwell AMVET Auxiliary.
Survivors include husband Andy A. Beulah L.F. Kluttz
Beulah Lingle Fesperman Kluttz, 106, formerly of Faith, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 18, 1894, in Rowan County, Mrs. Kluttz was a daughter of the late Mary Trexler and Littleton Lingle. Educated in Rowan County schools, she was a homemaker and a school teacher for one year and a principal for one year.
She was the oldest member of Faith Lutheran Church, and taught Sunday school for many years. She helped reorganize Faith’s Fourth of July Celebration in 1947.
Her first husband, Junius M. Fesperman, died Aug. 25, 1970; her second husband, W. Lee Kluttz, died Oct. 14, 1999.
Survivors include son Marcelle Fesperman, Salisbury; daughter Elaine Fesperman Thomas, Salisbury; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Bertha Gilland Lentz, 84, 604 Peach St., died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000)at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.
Born Oct. 16, 1916, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late William Ivey and Edna Teaster Gilland. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church where she was very active in her earlier years. She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 7 spinning room after 55 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Homer B. Lentz.
Survivors include son Earl B. Lentz; sister Margaret Gilland Turner, Kannapolis; two grandsons; and one great-grandchild.

Norma Woodman Maynard
Norma Woodman Maynard, 72, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 23, 1928, in Holbrook Mass., Mrs. Maynard was a daughter of the late Edith Mae Roundtree and LeRoy Woodman. Educated in Holbrook, Mass., schools she was a homemaker. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society, Rufty-Homes Senior Center, Taste of the Town and a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
Her husband, Arnold Frederick Maynard, died June 6, 1997.
Survivors include sons William Arthur Maynard, Weddington, and James Arnold Maynard, Columbus, Ohio; brother William Woodman, Holbrook, Mass.; and four grandchildren.

CHARLOTTE —Katheryn Tate Nash, 89, formerly of Salisbury, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000)at her residence after three years of declining health.
Born Dec. 17, 1910, in Dawson, Texas, Mrs. Nash was a daughter of the late Lucy Forbes and John Tate. Educated in Goldsboro schools, she was self-employed in the real estate business and was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Salisbury.
Survivors include husband Gilbert E. “Pete” Nash, whom she married Jan. 22, 1951; stepson Gilbert H. “Pete” Nash, Altamonte Springs, Fla.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

MOCKSVILLE —J.N. Richardson Jr., 76, Highway 158, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000)at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.
Born Sept. 10, 1924, in Richmond, Va., Mr. Richardson was a son of the late Chessie Carter and James N. Richardson. He worked with Pennington Chevrolet for 35 years and then went to Davie County schools until he retired as head mechanic. He was a member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church and Smith Grove Ruritan Club.
His wife of 56 years, Katherine W. Richardson, died Aug. 1, 2000.
Survivors include son Charles Richardson, Advance; daughter Patricia Richardson, Mocksville; sisters Sadie Rice, Mocksville, Irene Hege, Lexington, and Lillian Tallent, Advance; and four grandchildren.

John William “Bill”Smith
KANNAPOLIS —John William “Bill” Smith, 83, 317 Pine St., died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Oct. 24, 1917, in Washington, Ga., Mr. Smith was a son of the late Sidney Dewitt and Vedie Ethel Page Smith. He was a member of West Point Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany. He was a lifetime member of VFW Poston-Perkins Post 8989. He worked at Cannon Mills Co plant 1 finishing department, running a tinnet frame until he retired in 1982.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Goldia Belvin Smith; daughter Brenda S. Stowe, Belmont; son John S. Smith, York, S.C.; sisters Doris Major, Kentucky, Barbara Davidson, South Carolina, and Sue Bromirski, Connecticut; brother Grady Smith, Kannapolis.; and three grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS — Nellie Weddington Wilcox, 88, formerly of the Enochville community, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000)at Brian Center, Kannapolis.
Born Jan. 15, 1912, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Elva Brawley Weddington. She was a member of Bethpage United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, and lifetime member of United Methodist Women and a former Sunday school teacher. She retired from Cannon Mills cutting room in 1977. She was a former member of the YMCA Senior Citizens Club, YMCA Gleaners Club and the YMCA Chorus.
Her husband James Monroe Wilcox, who died Feb. 21, 1989.
Survivors include daughter Lynda W. Parnell, Concord; brothers Frank Weddington, Landis, and William Weddington, Kannapolis; sister Ethel W. Heglar, Kannapolis; three grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
