Lillie Plyler Smith Faggart

KANNAPOLIS — Lillie Plyler Smith Faggart, 90, 405 Jackson St., died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born April 5, 1910, in Iredell County, Mrs. Faggart was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Mott Plyler. She retired from Cannon Mills Plant 1 sewing room and was a member of North Kannapolis United Methodist Church and the Molly Marshall Circle.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Earl Wilson Smith and Leonard C. Faggart, and a daughter, Kay Smith Nash.

Survivors include daughter Jean Pless, Kannapolis, three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, North Kannapolis United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Stephen Autrey. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home of daughter Jean Pless, 401 Knollwood Drive.

Hildred W. Basinger

The funeral will be Wednesday for Hildred Weatherman Basinger, 78, 404 Yost Road, who died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at her residence.

Born Nov. 15, 1921, in Burke County, Mrs. Basinger was a daughter of the late Charles T. and Mamie Barrier Weatherman.

Educated in Burke County, she retired from Fiber Industries and was a member of Rock Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Basinger.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rock Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Jamie Hamrick. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 6-7:30 tonight, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times, the family will be at the home on Yost Road.

Margalene C. Burwell

The funeral will be Wednesday for Margalene Cartner Burwell, 61, Salisbury, who died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 9, 1939, in Davie County, Mrs. Burwell was a daughter of the late James S. Cartner Sr. and Ida Beatrice Snider Cartner.

A graduate of Granite Quarry High School, she was a homemaker and a member of Wittenberg Lutheran Church in Granite Quarry.

Survivors include husband Larry E. Burwell, whom she married on Nov. 9, 1957; sons Keith Burwell, Chapel Hill, and Dean Burwell, Concord; daughter Teresa B. Jelen-Hohenfels, Germany; brothers Terry Cartner, Concord, and James S. Cartner Jr., Greer; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Wittenberg Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bob Voelker and the Rev. Linda Voelker, co-pastors. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

ROCKWELL — Thelma Shuping Griffin, 62, 5810 N.C. 152 E., died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Beulah Fesperman Kluttz

Beulah Lingle Fesperman Kluttz, 106, Salisbury, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Norma Woodman Maynard

Norma Woodman Maynard, Salisbury, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Walter McGee

The funeral will be Wednesday for Walter McGee, 86, 535 N. Cedar St., who died Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000) at his residence after a serious illness of two months.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, United House of Prayer For All People, conducted by Elder A.M. Oakley Sr. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Rudy Brian McNeill

The funeral will be Wednesday for Rudy Brian McNeill, 27, 1150 Airport Road, who died Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Sept. 24, 1973, in Rowan County, Mr. McNeill was a son of Rudy Lee McNeill of Fletcher and Gerry Katherine Reece of Salisbury, and the stepson of Jane McNeill.

He was a graduate of South Rowan High School.

Survivors include wife Kristy Bowman McNeill, Cleveland; daughter Savanah Hope McNeill, Cleveland; brothers Johnny Reid McNeill, Salisbury, Joseph Alan McNeill, Asheville, and Jason Cook, Charlotte; and sister Toni J. McNeill, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Larry Beaver. Burial, Kannapolis City Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Katheryn Tate Nash

Katheryn Tate Nash, 89, 501 Melbourne Court, Charlotte, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at her residence.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

‘Tommy’ Rone Peeples

GRANITE QUARRY — Thomas “Tommy” Rone Peeples, 41, Granite Quarry, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center from injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident.

Born May 13, 1959, in Rowan County, Mr. Peeples was a son of Doris Helms Peeples McConnell, The Villages, Fla., and the late Kelly Peeples.

A graduate of East Rowan High School, he was the owner-operator of Peeples Bark & Stone on Mooresville Road and attended Neel Road Baptist Church. He was an Eagle Scout.

In addition to his mother, survivors include wife Lori Gobble Peeples, whom he married June 6, 1980; son Gregory Wayne Peeples, of the home; daughter Jennifer Rae Peeples, of the home; brother Mike Peeples, Granite Quarry; sisters Terri Brown and Debbie Benson, both of Salisbury; and paternal grandmother Eddie Kay Peeples, Morristown, Tenn.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Wilkes, pastor, Neel Road Baptist Church. Burial, Trading Ford Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home.

‘Tommy’ Shumaker

MOORESVILLE — Thomas Lee “Tommy” Shumaker, 83, Ward Curry Road, Lexington, died Monday (Nov. 13, 2000) at his residence after a brief illness.

Born March 30, 1917, in Mooresville, Mr. Shumaker was a son of the late Grady L. Shumaker and Annie Bass Cook.

He retired from Henry Link Furniture in 1979.

Son Bobby Shumaker preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Estelle Sharpe Shumaker; son Steve Shumaker, Mocksville; daughters Pat Marshall, Mocksville, Deanna Dillard, Advance, and Charlotte Powell, Lexington; sister Addie Steele Robey, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Clyde Akers. Burial, Rocky Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Fannie Lee Snider Spry

WOODLEAF — Fannie Lee Snider Spry, 85, Woodleaf, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a serious illness of five weeks.

Born Dec. 10, 1914, in Davidson County, Mrs. Spry was a daughter of the late John A. and Della Mae Shoaf Snider.

Educated in the Davidson and Rowan county schools, she worked as a spinner at Cooleemee Cotton Mill for 13 years. She also was a homemaker and a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Davie County.

Earlier in her life, Mrs. Spry wrote and recorded several country-folk songs.

Survivors include husband John W. Spry, whom she married Feb. 16, 1946; daughter Sharon Spry Coughenour, Woodleaf; brothers William Thomas Snider, Salisbury, and Herman Odell Snider, Woodleaf; sister Etta Snider Waller, Woodleaf; four grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home chapel, conducted by Elder Eugene Bennett and the Rev. George Riley. Burial, Legion Memorial Park, Cooleemee.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.
