Shirley Ann Temple Parks

LEXINGTON — Shirley Ann Temple Parks, 52, 226 Federal St., died Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000).

Born April 2, 1948, in Rowan County, Ms. Parks was a daughter of the late Jasper B. and Elise Lee Luther Parks.

She worked at the Holiday Inn Express of Lexington and attended Files Chapel Baptist Church.

Survivors include brother John B. Parks, Salisbury; and sisters Jennie Parks, Salisbury, and Lucille P. Click, Lexington.

Services: 1 p.m. Tuesday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Moses Caldwell. Burial, city cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The body will be at the funeral home from 1 to 8 p.m. today, and from 8:30 a.m. until the funeral hour on Tuesday.

 

Hildred W. Basinger

Hildred Weatherman Basinger, 78, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at her home. Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove is in charge.

 

Evelyn Sloop Biggerstaff

KANNAPOLIS — Evelyn Sloop Biggerstaff, 74, formerly of 328 Ruth Ave., died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at Brian Center in Concord, after seven months of declining health.

Born Feb. 1, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Biggerstaff was a daughter of the late Charles M. and Ruth Goodman Sloop.

A 1943 graduate of J.W. Cannon High School, she was a retired employee of Fieldcrest Cannon, with 37 years of service in the weave room of Plant 4.

Mrs. Biggerstaff was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, where she was active with WELCA.

Her husband, Ross J. Biggerstaff, died on March 10, 1979.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Charles R. Biggerstaff, Wilmington; brothers Marks, Ralph and Charles J. Sloop, all of Kannapolis, and the Rev. Luther R. Sloop, Newton; sisters Betty S. Shaver, Kannapolis, and Ethel S. Peeler, Newton; and two grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, New Hope Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Kovitch. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Memorial: Hospice of Cabarrus County, Box 1235, Concord, N.C. 28026-1235.

 

Janelle Caldwell Brown

CLEVELAND — Janelle Caldwell Brown, 90, 409 W. Main St., died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at her home.

Born May 4, 1910, in Spartanburg County, S.C., Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Edwin and Talulah Brown Caldwell.

She graduate from Erwin High School in Erwin, N.C., and Grady Hospital School of Nursing in Atlanta.

Mrs. Brown worked with her husband, Dr. James A. Brown Sr., in his medical office in Cleveland until his death and then taught at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for 20 years. She retired in 1996 at the age of 86, because of declining health.

She was a member of Third Creek Presbyterian Church, where she had been a Sunday school teacher and also served as an elder. She was a volunteer at the West Rowan Nutrition Site.

Her husband, Dr. James A. Brown Sr., died on Jan. 27, 1996.

Survivors include sons James A. Brown Jr. and Richard C. Brown, both of Cleveland; daughter Sarah Brown Carlon, Rutherford, N.J.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Cleveland First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Dancy, minister of Cleveland First Baptist, and the Rev. David Carriker, minister of Third Creek Presbyterian. The body will be cremated. Burial, Cleveland Town Cemetery.

Visitation: Today at the home, 409 W. Main St.

Margalene Burwell

Margalene Cartne Burwell, 61, Salisbury, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Powles Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Donald ‘Duck’ Wayne Corl

ROCKWELL — Donald “Duck” Wayne Corl, 58, Rockwell, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at his residence.

Born Dec. 29, 1941, in Rowan County, Mr. Corl was a son of Myrtle Simmons Corl, Gold Hill, and the late Grady Corl.

He was educated in the Rowan County Schools and took some college courses while in the U.S. Army. He was a owner-operator truck driver for OTE Inc.

Mr. Corl was a member of Salisbury Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Barnes Corl, whom he married on Aug. 24, 1963; son Duane Corl, Rockwell; daughter Joy Corl, Rockwell; brothers Robert and John Corl, both of Gold Hill, and Jerry Corl, Salisbury; sister Melva Adams, Jacksonville; and one grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Carl Seeks, pastor of Salisbury Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home.

William LeRoy Ervin

MOORESVILLE — William LeRoy “Roy” Ervin, 90, formerly of Brantley Street, died Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Home in Concord.

Born March 21, 1910, in Iredell County, Mr. Ervin was a son of the late Pink and Eunice Small Ervin.

He was a retired spinner, with 50 years of service for Mooresville Mills. Afterward, he worked with Cook’s Exterminating and at Harris Teeter and K&D Supermarket.

Mr. Ervin was a veteran of the Army during World War II and a member of Mount Mourne Church of God.

His wife, Pauline “Lena” Wright Ervin, died on Feb. 7, 1998.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Mount Mourne Church of God, conducted by the Rev. W. Lawrence Owenby. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Ottis Lee Gobble

MOCKSVILLE — Ottis Lee Gobble, 86, Sheffield Road, died Sunday (Nov. 12, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born July 21, 1914, in Davie County, Mr. Gobble was a son of the late Flossie Lanier and Willie Vestal Gobble.

He was a retired plumber, a farmer and a member of Ijames Baptist Church, where he served on the Board of Trustees and the Pulpit Committee. He enjoyed camping.

His wife of 54 years, Mary Audrey White Gobble, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons Donnie, Odell and Tommy Gobble, all of Mocksville; daughters Wanda McBride and Patsy Patti, both of Mocksville, and Dottie Wilkes, Winston-Salem; brothers W.M. and Clarence Gobble, both of Winston-Salem, and Virgil and Howard Gobble, both of Clemmons; sisters Betty Jean Rice, Clemmons, and Zula Meadows, Greensboro; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Ijames Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tommy Faust and the Rev. Franklin Myers. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home.

Walter ‘Walt’ McGee

Walter “Walt” McGee, 86, 535 N. Cedar St., died Saturday (Nov. 11, 2000) at his residence, after a serious illness of two months.

Born July 9, 1914, in Anderson County, S.C., Mr. McGee was a son of the late Charlie and Maggie McGee.

Educated in the Anderson County public schools, he was a retired employee of Cone Mills and a member of the United House of Prayer For All People, where he was a member of the Deacon Board and served as church treasurer for many years.

Daughter Ruby Walker preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Bessie Mae McGee; sister Alice Walker, Seneca, S.C.; half-sister Lorea Williams, Pendington, S.C.; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Norman Powell

FLETCHER — Norman Powell, 50, of Park Ridge Living Center, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2000) at Park Ridge Hospital.

Born April 5, 1950, in Rowan County, Mr. Powell was a son of the late Willie and Nevada Kerns Powell.

He was educated in the Rowan County Schools.

Survivors include brothers Tunie Powell, Granite Quarry, Grady Powell, Charlotte, Richard Powell, Marion, and Wilford Powell, Baltimore, Md.; and sisters Lillie Mae Mutz and Margie Powell Hall, both of Granite Quarry.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, White Rock AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. William Gullick. The body will be at the funeral home until being placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial, church cemetery. Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.
