MOCKSVILLE—Florence Cody, 93, a native of Davie
County, died Thursday (Nov. 2, 2000) at Guilford Health Care Center in
Greensboro after a lengthy illness.
Survivors include daughters Rebecca Isaac of
Mocksville, Helen Evans and Lula Nichols, both of Greensboro, Berlena Cody of
Yonkers, N.Y., Jenny Llewellyn of Hackensack, N.J., and Patricia Cody of
Patterson, N.J.; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

‘Bob’ Hampton
LAURINBURG — Robert Worth “Bob” Hampton,
84, 17482 St. John’s Church Road, died Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at Scotland
Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hampton was a graduate of Catawba College,
where he held pitching and home run records. He played professionally for the
N.Y. Yankees. He spent 45 years as office manager for Z.V. Pate Inc.

Adam Afton Lambert
LOCUST—Adam Afton Lambert, 81, 20048-A Coley
Store Road, died Thursday (Nov. 2, 2000) at Stanly Manor, Albemarle.
Born April 27, 1919, in Stanly County, he was the
son of the late Rettie and Levi Ransom Lambert.
Mr. Lambert had retired from Wells Fargo, where
he was an armored car driver. He was a member of West Stanly Baptist Church.
Survivors include wife Mary Helen Smith Lambert;
sons Stephen Lambert of Concord and David Lambert of Locust; brother Clayton
Lambert of Stanfield; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Joel Manly Lucas
Joel Manly Lucas, 68, 439 Pinewood Ave., died
Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at his home.
Born Dec. 24, 1931, in Rowan County, he was the
son of the late Grace Kennerly and Grady Clifford Lucas. Educated in the Landis
schools, he was formerly employed by a department store in Florida.
Survivors include wife Jean Correll Lucas; sons
Grady R. Lucas of China Grove, and John D. Lucas and Joey E. Lucas, both of
Salisbury; daughter Beverly L. Beasley of Lexington; and four grandchildren.
A private memorial service will be held at a
later date.

Rhonda Goodman Martin
MOORESVILLE—Rhonda Goodman Martin, 30, died
Thursday (Nov. 2, 2000).
Born Sept. 29, 1970, in Iredell County, she was
the daughter of Pamela Stephens Bohn and Presto Dale Goodman, both of
Mooresville. She was a waitress at Midtown Sundries in Cornelius.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include
sons William Troy Martin and Cody Bell Martin; brother Jesse Cole Goodman; twin
sister Renne Goodman Readling; stepfather Bruce Bohn; and grandparents Raymer

KANNAPOLIS — Harriet Beatrice Melton, 61, 918
S. Chapel St., died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord.
Born in Chesterfield County, S.C., she was a
teacher with the Kannapolis City Schools. She taught high school math for 31
years.
Survivors include husband Wilmer Melton Jr.; sons
Wilmer Melton III and Victor Melton, both of Kannapolis; brother Eric Lowery,
Baltimore; and sisters Paulette Clark, Mocksville, Shirley Simon, Wadesboro, Ray

Lester L. Poe
Lester L. Poe, 76, 1615 Long Ferry Road, died
Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at his residence after a period of declining health.
Born Jan. 19, 1924, in Salisbury, he was the son
of George E. Poe and the late Ellen Brinkle Poe.
A graduate of Dunbar High School in East Spencer,
he had retired as a nurse’s assistant at the VA Medical Center. He had also
retired from Norfolk Southern Railway. He was a member of New Hope AME Zion
Church.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he was
former Scoutmaster of Troop 382 and a former member of Veil & Walker VFW
Post.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include
wife Allene Brannon Poe; sons Lester L. Poe, Jr. of Springfield, Va., and Eric
Poe of Reston, Va.; daughters Leslie E. Parker of Fairfax, Va., and Vera Poe of
Monroeville, Pa.; brother Marion Poe of East Spencer; sisters Julia Correll and
Ualua Henderson, both of Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS—Bernice Frick Spry, 74, Kannapolis,
died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000) at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro after a period of
declining health.
Born Nov. 21, 1925, in Rowan County, she was the
daughter of the late Laura Stoner and Theodore Nathaniel Frick.
A homemaker, Mrs. Frick was educated in the Rowan
County schools.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James
R. Spry. There are no survivors.
There will be no visitation or services. Burial
at City Memorial Park in Salisbury.

LaVerne Grant Wagner
ROCKWELL—LaVerne “Vern” Grant Wagner, 66,
Rockwell, died Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
Salisbury.
Born Oct. 19, 1934 in Johnson City, N.Y., he was
the son of the late Eileen Conklin and Ervin Wagner. Educated in the New York
schools, he had retired from IBM as an internal trucking technician. He was a
member of American Quarter Horses of America and Grace Lowerstone United Church
of Christ.
Survivors include wife Louise Cobb Wagner; son
Scott Wagner of Rockwell; daughter Teri Wagner Morgan of Kiowa, Colo.; brother
Neil Wagner of Owego, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

Billy Monroe Watson
Billy Monroe Watson, 78, 2160 Barringer Road,
died Friday (Nov. 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two weeks of
declining health.
Born Oct. 16, 1922, in Rowan County, he was the
son of the late Mary Sifford and Walter L. Watson. His stepmother, Ethel Graham
Watson, also preceded him in death.
Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a
U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had retired from Hoechst-Celanese after 18
years with the company. He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, Mooresville
Moose Lodge 2012 and Tarheel Moose Legion 158.
Survivors include wife Mary Kluttz Watson, whom
he married April 20, 1983; sons Billy Alexander Watson of Mooresville, and Billy
Brian Watson and Keith Watson, both of Salisbury; daughters Sandra Faye Watson
of Mooresville and Sharyn Marlayna Watson of Salisbury; stepsons Charles Lee
Martin and Ricky Dale Martin, both of Mooresville; stepdaughters Deborah
“Cotton” Proctor of Mooresville and Frances Carrol Garrett of Troutman;
brothers John Watson and James “Jim” Watson, both of Salisbury, and Harold
Watson of Cornelius; sisters Mildred Louise Hamby and Nancy Cornelius Biggers,
both of Salisbury, Betty Jean Bowers of Greensboro and Linda Sharon Wall of
Raleigh; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
