Clifton Henry Barnes

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Friday for Clifton Henry Barnes, 83, U.S. Hwy. 64 E., who died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation in Salisbury.

Born Aug. 12, 1917, in Davie County, Mr. Barnes was a son of the late Richard C. and Florence Wyatt Barnes. Retired from Heritage Furniture Co., Mocksville, he was a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife of 59 years Omie Jones Barnes; brother Harvey Barnes, Mocksville; and sisters Pearl B. Walser, Lexington, and Lelia B.Lemley, Mebane.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Davie Funeral Service chapel, conducted by Elder Eugene Bennett. Burial, No Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

‘Peaches’ N. Bryant

Peach “Peaches” N. Bryant, 68, 1336 Standish St., died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation,Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

David Alonzo Bunch

STATESVILLE — David Alonzo Bunch, 85, 2508 Simonton Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at his home.

Born Sept. 29, 1915, in Iredell County, Mr. Bunch was a son of the late A.W. and Minnie Davis Bunch. He was a graduate of Mitchell College and a 1935 graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College.

He taught history and French at Boyden High School, Salisbury, until 1942 and co-founded B & B Fabrics in 1949.

A veteran, he was a Naval officer during World War II. Although a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church since his youth, he taught the adult Sunday School class at New Salem United Methodist Church for 30 years.

He volunteered at Statesville Library and had staffed the James Iredell Room for the last 25 years.

Mr. Bunch was recently honored by the Governor of North Carolina in recognition for his service to the Citizens of IredellCounty. He was one of the first recipients of the Nine Who Care awards, presented by WSOC -TV in Charlotte.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

Services: 4 p.m. today, Broad Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Don Haynes and the Rev. Rob Rollins. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery,Statesville.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Thursday at the church.

James Elbert Christy

CHINA GROVE — James Elbert Christy, 71, died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center, Concord.

Gregory Todd Coley

CHARLOTTE — Gregory Todd Coley, 39, Charlotte, died Monday (Oct. 30, 2000) at his home.

Born May 14, 1961, in Stanly County,Mr. Coley was a son of Kenneth Wayne Coley, Hull,Ga., and the late Judith Vanhoy Coley. He was employed as the manager of Crown Petroleum Fast Fare, Charlotte.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include sister Edna Jerene Webster, China Grove; and brothers Kenneth Wayne Coley Jr., Hull,Ga., and David Burns Coley, Kannapolis.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Whitley’s Funeral Home chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Cooper. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Edna Jerene Webster, 1536 Pine Ridge Road, China Grove.

 

Lolene Corriher

Lolene Corriher, 94, Salisbury, died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Gennie Coley Farmer

NORWOOD — Gennie Lee Coley Farmer, 80, 32939 Chapel Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born April 19, 1920, in Stanly County, Mrs. Farmer was a daughter of the late Benjamin Aaron and SarahAgnes Howard Coley.

A member of Aquadale Baptist Church, she retired as a winder from Wiscassett Mills.

Survivors include son Jessie Farmer, Albemarle; daughter Sharon Carpenter, Norwood; sisters Mary Thomas, Albemarle, Sudie Hartsell, Stanfield, and Flonnie Lucas, Charlotte; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Lee Church. Burial, Silver Springs Baptist Church cemetery, Norwood.

Visitation:7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on ChapelRoad.

 

Bob Hailey

LEXINGTON — Roy Richard “Bob” Hailey, 57, 711 Westside Drive Ext., died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 19, 1942, in Davidson County, Mr. Hailey was a son of Samuel Elijah Hailey and the late Lillie Mae Reid Giles Hailey. He served with the U.S. Navy.

A Baptist, he retired from Johnston Truck Line.

Survivors, in addition to his father, include wife Barbara Jean “Bobbie” Hailey; daughter Melissa Hailey Green, Linwood; sons Bobby Ray and Tony Leroy Hailey, both of Linwood, andDwayne Baxter Hailey, Lexington; sister Doris Jean Allen, Lexington; brothers James, Samuel “Bud”, and Howard “Pete” Hailey, all of Lexington; and six grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Piedmont Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Beckom.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Westside Drive Extension.

Charles Franklin Hargrave

LEXINGTON —The funeral will be Friday for Charles Franklin Hargrave, 76, 13083 Linwood-Southmont Road, who died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000) at his home.

Born July 10, 1924, in Davidson County, Mr. Hargrave, a son of the late Early and Beaulah Lindsay Hargrave, attendedDunbar High School, Lexington.

He retired from Stanley Furniture and was a member and usher at First Baptist Southmont.

Survivors include a niece and nephew.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, First Baptist Church, Southmont, conducted by the Rev. John G. Gaston. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: The body may be viewed from 12-8 today and from 8 a.m.- 1:30 p.m. Friday at Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington.

 

Edward A. Harris

CHARLOTTE — Edward A. Harris, 68, 5709 Runningwood Lane, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at Presbyterian Hospital.

A Salisbury native, Mr. Harris was educated in the Rowan County schools. He attended Mount Clair State College and was a former assistant coach at Livingstone College, Salisbury.

A golf coach, he retired in 1997 from Johnson C. Smith University. He was a member of Golf Coaches Association of America.

A son, Reginald Cureton, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Deloris Harris; sons Daryl Cureton, Charlotte, Andrew Harris, Fredericksburg, Md., and Douglas Harris, Salisbury; daughters Melissa Cureton, Charlotte, Priscilla Glasco, Plainfield, N.J., and Kim Gibson and Hattie Hogue, both of Salisbury; brother Alfred Harris, Murfreesboro; sister the Rev. Orrie Gaither, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Services:1 p.m. Saturday, Johnson C. Smith University Chapel. Burial, Beatties Ford Memorial Gardens.

Visitation: 12:30-12:55 p.m. Saturday at the university chapel.

COOLEEMEE — Pauline K. Kerley, 75, Cooleemee, died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Alfrecia ‘Frecia’ Mims

HEPHZIBAL, Ga. — Alfrecia “Frecia” Mims, 4232 Old Waynesboro Road, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2000)at The University Hospital.

A native of Albemarle, N.C., Miss Mims was a daughter of Brenda Geter Mims, Augusta, and Rufus Mims, Plumb Branch, S.C. She was a 1996 graduate of Salisbury High School, Salisbury, N.C., and a 2000 graduate of Georgia Southwestern University, Americus.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include sisters Edwenta Lewis, Ninety Six, S.C., and Shaldonia Mims Houston, Naples, Italy; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Otis Mims, Palm Branch, S.C.; and maternal grandmother Viola Geter, Augusta.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Second Ebenezer Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Angelo Hatcher. Burial, church cemetery.

The family will be at 3603 Bitternut St.

Rosie Miller Moses

ALBEMARLE — Rosie Lee Miller Moses, 85, 534 Alfred St., died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born April 23, 1915, in Lancaster, S.C., Mrs. Moses, a daughter of the late Jim and Martha Truesdale Miller, was educated in the Lancaster County, S.C., schools. She retired from Stanly County Government.

A member of ColsonStreet Church of God, she was mother of the church, a member of the Celestial Gospel Singers and the missionary circle.

Her husband, the Rev. L.C. Moses, and a son, Lester Moses, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Sammie L. Moses, Brooklyn, N.Y., C.L. Moses Jr. and James E., Lloyd F., Herman L. and David L. Moses, all of Albemarle, L.C. Moses, Warwick, N.Y., and Edward L. Moses, Jackson; daughters Jessie M. Scott and Mary M. Mims, both of Albemarle, and Rosella Clyburn, Charlotte; sister Hattie Williams, Kannapolis; 109 grandchildren; 93 great-grandchildren; and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Saints Delight Church, conducted by Elder James E. Richardson, pastor, and the Rev. James L. Huntley. Burial, East Side Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Lester L. Poe, 1615 Long Ferry Road, died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at his home after a period of declining health.

Mary ‘Hanky’ Russell

NORWOOD — Mary Frances “Hanky” Skidmore Russell died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Mrs. Russell was a daughter of the late Clyde Alexander and Mary Stevens Skidmore and a graduate of Albemarle High School. She received a bachelor of science degree from Women’s College, the University of North Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She did graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and from 1967-1996 worked as an assistant professor of accounting at Pfeiffer University.

She had also worked with Long’s Jewelers and Jeff Smith, Certified Public Accountant, Albemarle, and the ABC Board in Norwood. Other work experiences included McLean Trucking Co, Winston-Salem, and Smith and Miller, CAP, Lee Construction Co. and Rosson-Richards in Charlotte.

A member of the steering committee and the first board of directors of the Bank of Stanley, she was also a member of Pfeiffer University Friends of the Library. She was a driver for the American Cancer Society Road to Recovery and Meals on Wheels.

She was affiliated with First Presbyterian Church of Albemarle, Christ Episcopal Church, Albemarle, and Memorial Baptist Church, Norwood, where she taught Sunday school.

In 1989, the Pfeiffer University Mary S. Russell Endowed Accounting Scholarship was established in her honor.

Survivors include husband Elmon Shelton Russell.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Lambert.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle.

Kate Whitaker Smith

The funeral will be Friday for Kate Whitaker Smith, 88, 820 Klumac Road, who died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Aug. 29, 1912, in Rowan County, Mrs. Smith, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Daisy Trexler Whitaker, was educated in the Salisbury city schools.

She was formerly employed with Welcome Wagon and Belks of Salisbury, where she was a clerk in the children’s department for a number of years.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Salisbury and was active with the Dorcas Sunday School class. She was also involved in the Margaret White Circle, Gold and Silver Club and was a Sunday school teacher in the primary department for many years. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and Milford Hills Lioness Club.

Her husband, O.T. Smith, died in April 1988. He had been a teacher at Rockwell Elementary School and Erwin Junior High School.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday,Summersett Funeral Home chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tom Roberts. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a nephew, William W. Webb, 515 Heilig Ave.

CHINA GROVE — Bernice Frick Spry, 74, died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at Vencor Hospital,Greensboro.

Billy Ray Starnes

Billy Ray Starnes, 62, 615 W.Fisher St., died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at Brightmoor Nursing Center after a period of lingering health.

Born Dec. 3, 1937, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Starnes was a son of Celia Overcash Earnhart, China Grove, and the late Henry Albert Starnes. He attended the Kannapolis schools and had worked as a carpenter.

A daughter, Celia Marie Starnes, died in 1961.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include daughters Lana Ashby, Rockwell, Angela Carter, Salisbury, and Sylvia Bradley, Spencer; brothers Albert Eugene Starnes, China Grove, and Jimmy L. Earnhart, Kannapolis; sister Juanita G. Boone, China Grove; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:None. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Juanita G. Boone, Clearview Trailer Park, Lot 8, Mount Hope Church Road.

Mary Lois Wilson

ADVANCE — The funeral will be Friday for Mary Lois Wilson, 77, Meadowbrook Terrace, who died Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2000)at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

BornJan. 11, 1923, in Davie County, Miss Wilson was a daughter of the late James Butler and Hattie Powell Wilson. She was a 1941 graduate of Mocksville High School.

She had worked as a clerk with Johnson Grocery, as an Avon representative and at Erwin Mills. She was a member of Jericho Church of Christ.

Survivors include sister Mabel W. Pence, Cleveland, and Sara W. Koontz, Mocksville.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel., Mocksville, conducted by Tom Torpy. Burial, Jericho Church of Christ cemetery.
