Born Aug. 12, 1917,
in Davie County, Mr. Barnes was a son of the late Richard C. and
Florence Wyatt Barnes. Retired from Heritage Furniture Co.,
Mocksville, he was a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include
wife of 59 years Omie Jones Barnes; brother Harvey Barnes,
Mocksville; and sisters Pearl B. Walser, Lexington, and Lelia
B.Lemley, Mebane.

David Alonzo Bunch
STATESVILLE — David
Alonzo Bunch, 85, 2508 Simonton Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at
his home.
Born Sept. 29, 1915,
in Iredell County, Mr. Bunch was a son of the late A.W. and Minnie
Davis Bunch. He was a graduate of Mitchell College and a 1935
graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College.
He taught history and
French at Boyden High School, Salisbury, until 1942 and co-founded B
& B Fabrics in 1949.
A veteran, he was a
Naval officer during World War II. Although a member of Broad Street
United Methodist Church since his youth, he taught the adult Sunday
School class at New Salem United Methodist Church for 30 years.
He volunteered at
Statesville Library and had staffed the James Iredell Room for the
last 25 years.
Mr. Bunch was
recently honored by the Governor of North Carolina in recognition
for his service to the Citizens of IredellCounty. He was one of the
first recipients of the Nine Who Care awards, presented by WSOC -TV
in Charlotte.
Survivors include a
number of nieces and nephews.

Livingstone College, Salisbury.
A golf coach, he
retired in 1997 from Johnson C. Smith University. He was a member of
Golf Coaches Association of America.

Georgia Southwestern University, Americus.

in Lancaster, S.C., Mrs. Moses, a daughter of the late Jim and
Martha Truesdale Miller, was educated in the Lancaster County, S.C.,
schools. She retired from Stanly County Government.
A member of
ColsonStreet Church of God, she was mother of the church, a member
of the Celestial Gospel Singers and the missionary circle.
Her husband, the Rev.
L.C. Moses, and a son, Lester Moses, preceded her in death.

Frances “Hanky” Skidmore Russell died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2000)at
Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.
Mrs. Russell was a
daughter of the late Clyde Alexander and Mary Stevens Skidmore and a
graduate of Albemarle High School. She received a bachelor of
science degree from Women’s College, the University of North
Carolina, now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She
did graduate work at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
and from 1967-1996 worked as an assistant professor of accounting at
Pfeiffer University.
She had also worked
with Long’s Jewelers and Jeff Smith, Certified Public Accountant,
Albemarle, and the ABC Board in Norwood. Other work experiences
included McLean Trucking Co, Winston-Salem, and Smith and Miller,
CAP, Lee Construction Co. and Rosson-Richards in Charlotte.
A member of the
steering committee and the first board of directors of the Bank of
Stanley, she was also a member of Pfeiffer University Friends of the
Library. She was a driver for the American Cancer Society Road to
Recovery and Meals on Wheels.
She was affiliated
with First Presbyterian Church of Albemarle, Christ Episcopal
Church, Albemarle, and Memorial Baptist Church, Norwood, where she
taught Sunday school.
In 1989, the Pfeiffer
University Mary S. Russell Endowed Accounting Scholarship was
established in her honor.

husband Elmon Shelton Russell.

Born Aug. 29, 1912,
in Rowan County, Mrs. Smith, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and
Daisy Trexler Whitaker, was educated in the Salisbury city schools.
She was formerly
employed with Welcome Wagon and Belks of Salisbury, where she was a
clerk in the children’s department for a number of years.
She was a member of
First Baptist Church of Salisbury and was active with the Dorcas
Sunday School class. She was also involved in the Margaret White
Circle, Gold and Silver Club and was a Sunday school teacher in the
primary department for many years. She was a former member of the
Eastern Star and Milford Hills Lioness Club.
Her husband, O.T.
Smith, died in April 1988. He had been a teacher at Rockwell
Elementary School and Erwin Junior High School.
