funeral will be Wednesday for John Leonard Boyd, 57, who died Saturday (May 27, 2000) at
Presbyterian Hospital.
Born June 18, 1942, in Salisbury, Mr. Boyd was a son of the
late John Lee and Selwyn Mebane Boyd. He had been employed for over 31 years with United
Engineering Group, formerly Mechanical Engineers. He was a member and deacon at Hickory
Grove Presbyterian Church. A veteran, he served in the U.S. National Guard for seven
years.
Survivors include wife Sherrie Boyd; and daughter Shauna
Boyd.

Jhockton Farrand Dalton
MOCKSVILLE The funeral will be Thursday for Jhockton
Farrand Dalton, 16, who died Saturday (May 27, 2000) from injuries sustained in an
automobile accident.
Born in Rockingham County, the youth was a son of Thomas
and Gloria Diane Roberts Dalton. He was a rising senior at Davie High School, where he was
on the football, track and wrestling teams and was a member of Junior ROTC and the
Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He worked with Special Olympics and was a former member
of the Davie High School marching band.
He was a member of New Jerusalem Holiness Church and was
employed by Taco Bell in Mocksville.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include maternal
grandmother and step-grandfather, Charles and Geraldine Boyd, Eden; maternal
great-grandparents Burton and Cinda Matthews, Eden; paternal grandparents Charles and
Helen Dalton, Mocksville; and paternal great-grandmother Flora Mack, Mocksville.
Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, First Baptist Church, conducted
by the Rev. Steven Dalton and Bishop Robert Ijames. Burial, Rose Cemetery.

MOCKSVILLE James Kyle Gregory, 34, Dulin Road, died
Sunday (May 28, 2000) at his home.
Born June 5, 1965, in Forsyth County, Mr. Gregory was a son
of James W. Gregory Jr. and Linda Robertson Gregory, Mocksville. He graduated from Davie
County High School in 1983 and was a member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church.

Mary Sellers Moore
CHINA GROVE The funeral will be Wednesday for Mary
Elizabeth Sellers Moore, 68, 420 Backwoods Lane, who died Sunday (May 28, 2000) at her
home after four months of illness.
Born Feb. 19, 1932, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs.
Moore was a daughter of the late Tom and Essie Eddings Sellers. She had retired in 1989 as
an inspector at Cannon Mills cutting department. She was a Baptist.
Her husband, Johnny Moore, died in 1990.
Survivors include son Perry Wallace, China Grove; daughters
Mary Wallace, China Grove, Sandra Winburn, Salisbury, and Darlene Stowe, Kannapolis;

Annie Bell McCleave
Annie Bell Butler McCleave, 87, formerly of 1125 Grady St.,
died Sunday (May 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born May 26, 1913, in Concord, Mrs. McCleave was a daughter
of the late Ed and Carrie Hunter Black Butler. Educated in the Cabarrus County schools,
she had retired as an employee of the District of Columbia. She was of the Baptist faith.

and sisters Virginia Thomas and Amanda Singleton, both of Kannapolis, and Mattie

Perry Cluster Phillips
KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Wednesday for Perry
Cluster Phillips, 57, 404 Ford St., who died Sunday (May 28, 2000) at NorthEast Medical
Center, Concord, after 10 years of declining health and four years of serious illness.
Born Nov. 6, 1932, in Royston, Ga., Mr. Phillips was a son
of the late Wilburn Red and Eliza Louise Adams Phillips. He was a member of
Jackson Park Pentecostal Holiness Church and a volunteer firefighter with Kannapolis Fire
Department. Retired, he had worked for the Kannapolis Water Department and had earlier
been employed by Cannon Mills for many years.
Survivors include wife Anne Aldridge Phillips; sons Mark
Anthony Phillips, Kannapolis, and Joshua Lee Phillips, of the home; and sisters Faye Ward
and Lillian Royal, both of Kannapolis, and Myrtle Fullerton, Mount Ulla.

John Thomas Steele
CLEVELAND The funeral will be Thursday for John
Thomas J.T. Steele, 81, who died Sunday (May 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury, after six weeks of serious illness.
Born April 12, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Steele was a son
of the late Walter and Caroline McHenry Steele. He was educated in the Rowan County
schools. A veteran of World War II, he retired from Southern Railway in 1980.
A lifelong member of Cedar Grove AME Zion Church, he was a
trustee, past president of the trustee board, lay council and the steward board and was
pastors steward. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner and a member of Eureka Lodge
45, Samuel J. Torrence Lodge of Perfection No. 1, Willie J. Byers Chapter Roxe Croix,
Robert W. Chambers Consistory and Mount Nebo Shrine Club.
His wife, Sallie Watson Steele, died in 1982.
Survivors include son Thomas M. Steele, Flemington, N.J.;
daughters Catrelia Steele Hunter, Cleveland, Carolyn Steele Snipes and Sybil Steele
Henderson, both of Durham, Marsha Steele Knox, Greensboro, and Rachel Steele Hunter, East
Spencer; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

MIDLAND Thomas Otha Wilson, 68, 13163 Peppercorn
Lane, died Sunday (May 28, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born May 3, 1932, in Mooresville, Mr. Wilson was a son of
the late Thomas Otha and Virginia Theadoshia Ervin Wilson. A truck driver for Southern
Star Trucking, he was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, Stanfield, and a veteran of the
U.S. Navy.

MOCKSVILLE Thellis Gertrude Brewer, 87, of Angell
Road, died Saturday (May 27, 2000) at Autumn Care of Mocksville.
Born April 6, 1913, in Davie County, Mrs. Brewer was a
daughter of the late William Batson and Mary LuCretia Bowden Allen. A homemaker, she was a
member of Eatons Baptist Church, Cana Homemakers Club, and the East Davie Senior Club.
Her husband of 63 years, Herman Gray Brewer, preceded her
in death.
Survivors include son Eugene G. Brewer, Mocksville;
daughter Martha Hunt, Mocksville; and three grandchildren.

ROCKWELL Max Luther Greer, 61, died
Monday (May 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
Born Sept. 20, 1938, in Watauga County, Mr. Greer was a son
of Win M. and Zelma Luther Greer of Salisbury. Educated in the Ashe County schools, he
attended Rowan Technical Institute (Rowan-Cabarrus Community College) and the N.C. Truck
Driving School. Employed by Akers Motor Line for 10 years, he later worked for Abex
Federal Mogul since September 1977.
Survivors include wife Carole Graham Greer, whom he married
on May 17, 1958; son Michael Greer, Rockwell; daughters Bambi Faw Amick, Raleigh, and
Susan G. Pickler, Salisbury; brothers Rex W. and Robert M. Greer, both of Salisbury; and
five grandchildren.

ALBEMARLE Julia Poplin Leonard, 81, of 21719 Rogers
Road, Richfield, died Sunday (May 28, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Aug. 30, 1918, in Stanly County, Mrs. Leonard was a
daughter of the late Adam Luther and Phodia Elizabeth Thompson Poplin. She was a former
retied winder with American & Efird.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Albert
Leonard.
Survivors include son James A. Leonard Jr., Richfield;
daughters Sue Carol L. Swaringen, Albemarle, Zelia Ann L. Springer and Rebecca Jo L.
