A pregnant woman was critically injured and flown to a nearby hospital this morning after
her minivan was hit from behind and pushed head-on into an oncoming car.Six people were involved in the three-car collision that occurred
around 8 a.m. on N.C. 150 West in front of the Atwell Volunteer Fire Department, at the
intersection of Concordia Church and Deal roads.
N.C. Highway Patrol troopers are continuing their
investigation and could not release any names this morning.
According to Rowan County Rescue Squad Chief Coyt Karriker,
a 27-year-old woman who is eight months pregnant suffered the most serious injury. A
helicopter flew the woman, who was driving a burgundy Chevy Lumina minivan, to Wake Forest
Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
A passenger in the minivan was transported to Rowan
Regional Medical Center with abdominal injuries.
According to Highway Patrol Sgt. V.F. Mellone, the driver
of a gold Ford Ranger struck the minivan from behind as the van either slowed or
attempted to make a turn.
Mellone said the driver of the truck told troopers he
was blinded by the sun reflection off the van.
At the scene, the driver of the Ranger told a Post reporter
he had nothing to say about the accident. He and his passenger refused
treatment from emergency responders.
The impact of the rear end collision apparently propelled
the minivan across the center line into the path of an on-coming red Pontiac Bonneville,
Mellone said.
The Enochville Fire Department took both people in the
Bonneville to NorthEast Medical Center.
Rescue Chief Coyt Karriker said the West Rowan Fire
Department assisted the Rescue Squad in removing the door from the minivan to treat the
pregnant driver.
